  1. My father had radiation to a spot on his spine and it ead very effective. Essentially cleared it up altogether. He has another spot on his spine now, that as long as it is pain free, his Dr. will treat w/ Tarceva alone. However, she said if it became painful, they could do radiation, also. His Dr. has said that bone and spine and *relatively* easy palces to treat. Good luck.
  2. Gail, My father started taking Tarceva about 5 weeks ago. He did get the rash. Very severe at first: open, weeping blisters on his face. Topical clindamycin helped a great deal. He still has the rash to some degree and uses the topical cream to keep it under control. I have heard some people say that if you get the rash, that means that the Tarceva is working. Don't really know if there is any truth in that. He has repeat scans in September, hopefully it will show that the Tarceva really is working!!

    Bone mets

My fathers latest bone scan showed three new areas of bone mets: Spine, knee and femur. The doctor indicated to my dad he would stay on the Tarceva, and didnt say anything about radiation to these spots. I'm waiting for the onc to call me back with more info. Can anyone tell me if radiation is typically used for bone mets?
  6. My sister, Lisa, posted last week that my dad had an awful facial rash from the Tarceva. His oncologist put him on topical Clindamycin and 4 days later it is all but gone. Does the rash come back? Or do people typically get it only at the beginning of treatment?
  7. An older lady gets pulled over for speeding... Older Woman: Is there a problem, Officer? Officer: Ma'am, you were speeding. Older Woman: Oh, I see. Officer: Can I see your license please? Older Woman: I'd give it to you but I don't have one Officer: Don't have one? Older Woman: Lost it, 4 years ago for drunk driving. Officer: I see...Can I see your vehicle registration papers please. Older Woman: I can't do that. Officer: Why not? Older Woman: I stole this car. Officer: Stole it? Older Woman: Yes, and I killed and hacked up the owner Officer: You what? Older Woman: His body parts are in plastic bags in the trunk if you want to see The Officer looks at the woman and slowly backs away to his car and calls for back up. Within minutes 5 police cars circle the car. A senior officer slowly approaches the car, clasping his half drawn gun. Officer 2: Ma'am, could you step out of your vehicle please! The woman steps out of her vehicle. Older woman: Is there a problem sir? Officer 2: One of my officers told me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner. Older Woman: Murdered the owner? Officer 2: Yes, could you please open the trunk of your car, please. The woman opens the trunk, revealing nothing but an empty trunk. Officer 2: Is this your car, ma'am? Older Woman: Yes, here are the registration papers. The officer is quite stunned. Officer 2: One of my officers claims that you do not have a driving license. The woman digs into her handbag and pulls out a clutch purse and hands it to the officer. The officer examines the license. He looks quite puzzled. Officer 2: Thank you ma'am, one of my officers told me you didn't have a license, that you stole this car, and that you murdered and hacked up the owner. Older Woman: Bet the liar told you I was speeding, too
  8. A woman was leaving a convenience store with her morning coffee when she noticed a most unusual funeral procession approaching the nearby cemetery. A long black hearse was followed by a second long black hearse about 50 feet behind the first one. Behind the second hearse was a solitary woman walking a pit bull on a leash. Behind her, a short distance back, were about 200 women walking single file. The woman was so curious that she respectfully approached the woman walking the dog and said, "I am so sorry for your loss, and I know now is a bad time to disturb you, but I have never seen a funeral like this. Whose funeral is it?" "My husband's." "What happened to him?" The woman replied, "My dog attacked and killed him." She inquired further, "Well, who is in the second hearse?" The woman answered, "My mother-in-law. She was trying to help my husband when the dog turned on her." A poignant and thoughtful moment of silence passed between the two women. "Can I borrow the dog?" "Get in line." A Woman's Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray for: Wisdom, To understand a man. Love, To forgive him and; Patience, For his moods. Because, Lord, if I pray for Strength I'll just beat him to death

    Iressa

My father is complaining of always feeling extremely cold lately. This is very unlike his norm. Does anyone know if this could be a side effect of the Iressa? (Or maybe just the crummy weather we've been having this spring here in the North East. )
  12. I am Lisa's sister and I told her I would respond to you about Cancer Centers. I used to live in Md. and as a nurse case manager, I traveled to alot of different hospitals. Johns Hopkins has a well known cancer center, as well as Georgetown in D.C. Both retain expert physicians from around the globe. Here is Pa., we have Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, that is very well known. We went there for a second opinion when my father was first diagnosed. He saw Dr. Treat, who specializes in Lung cancer alone. He gave us reassurance that the treatment that my dad's primary oncologist was proposing was the right thing. We have also called him a time or two since, just to ask his opinion on different things. He was really great. Your sister is very lucky to have you looking out for her. Your both in our prayers. You should try posting on the "Welcome new members" Forum, you'll be surprised all the warm responses & sound advise you will get!!
  13. Well, my mom & dad have been checking out the site and reading all of your responses. My whole family is very moved by your warm welcome and support. My father saw his oncologist on Friday and she is considering changing him from Iressa to Tarceva. He is paying out of pocket for the Iressa and it is (as most of you know) very expensive!! He gets most of his drugs from the VA, althought they would not cover Iressa, his doctor thinks they may cover Tarceva. Please know, my family has each and every one of you in our prayers. Also, I was reprimanded by my father for "Jumping the Gun." He is 70, not 71. (Birthday June 1st.) Sorry Dad!!
  14. My father was treated w/ Taxotere. 3 treatments, one every three weeks. He received nupigen injects with this, as it lowered his blood counts. The doctor had told him that he would lose all his hair, however he only lost about 70%. He did get very dehydrated and needed to get IV fluids a few times. He also developed an infection soon after the first treatment and was treated with antibiotics. No nausea or vomitting. He responded very well to it. All in all, it wasnt too bad. (Easy for me to say, since I wasnt the one taking it!!)
  15. Charlie, It is so inspiring to hear yours and everyones stories of survival. Today is my first time on this site. I'm here for good now!! Thank you for sharing your story.
  16. My father is 71 years old, he smoked for 30 years. He quit 20 years ago. No one was expecting it, when in September 04, he was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer. He had a primary tumor in his lung, 2cm, major lymph node involvement and a small spot on his spine (neck). He underwent radiation x 6 weeks, followed by chemo- Taxotere (3 cycles). He completed all this in mid January. His reports have been good- lung tumor- gone, spinal tumor- gone, lymph nodes have shrunk dramatically. He is currently taking Irressa, (oral agent) and has even had some additional shrinkage of tumors with this. He had a Pet Scan this month, and no new sites, all looks well. My father is an incredibly strong, healthy and active guy. We are a very close family, and my father is a wonderful grandparent to my two boys and my sisters two girls. We now we are far from beating this, but feel we have been very lucky so far. I plan to visit this site frequently, and would love to offer my support to all of you, (as well as get a little in return)
