Here's What I Did To Fight SCLC

Thanks Don!

I loved all your adivce, especially the parts about giving my body what it needs, food, sleep and exercise. I recently started exercising again even though a little voice inside of me said "why bother", but then a bigger voice said that I must keep my body strong and healthy because "I WILL NOT DIE OF CANCER". I truly believe that God has a plan for me and I am trying to listen very closely so that I will come to know what it is.

Today I came home from doing errands to discover that the guys who were paving our street knocked over our mailbox with a piece of heavy equipment. At first I was really annoyed and started thinking about who to call to complain, but then I remembered that I was feeling really good today and I decided to just thank God for that and let the rest go.

Thank you so much for that inspirational story.

Tracy

Don,

I liked your posting. The Lord still does miracles. I don't have any question right now, but I did like what you said about posting it here so that everyone could benefit. I had been e-mailing files to people the requested about the things that I have done to help me. When I read your post, I thought why not so I posted the entire file on My Story. I thought you may like to read them. My Story - Ernie's Story stage IV.

Stay positive,

Ernie

Hi Don,

Your posting was the first one I read on this site when I did an initial search for information (more specifically, for survivors). It was so inspiring. I printed it and showed it to my husband (who had just been diagnosed), and I reference it often.

I realized that I never posted a "thank you." I think you've helped an awful lot of people, probably more than you realize.

So happy for you that you're beating this monster!

God bless,

Teri

Hello All. Thank all of you for your wonderful comments. I just want you to know that today is my 4 year survior mark for me. I feel better than ever, have had total hip replacements in both hips, and too top it all off they now have given me hearing aids. LOL. Like I am gonna pay attention to things. They are great for church in hearing the pastor or watching tv. Other than that they live on my dresser. I hope you all remember in the beginning they said maybe 2 weeks to 2 months for me. Well that shows the treatments have gotten better and the Lord still works for all of us. Dont let your mind take you down, or lack of eating, drinking water, and or statistics. I had fun today and I know that I will tomorrow.

God Bless

Don

My picture and history was removed by my thinking I knew how to use a computer. Will replace it later.

Don,

What great news. I am so, so happy for you! You were so wonderful for me in the early stages of my dad's fight. Thank you for your courage, and your hope, and your prayers.

My dad is in remission, and I thank God for that every day. Of course, my prayers continue for you and all those who have ever had to battle with this mess!

God bless,

Jen

Yes I did but was not any problems. Seems it would start from laying around too much in my opinion. It showed up on pet scans a few times so I would get busy working outside and it seemed to disappear. Work never hurt anybody.

Hi Don,

Maybe I should have started a new chain with this, but was hoping I could get your input. My Dad just got done PCI two weeks ago.

He has had a total of 48 radiation treatments

30 to the left lung where the tumor was (which is gone now) and 18 to the brain for preventative.

He basically is doing well, although whenever I speak with him, he complains about the metallic taste in his mouth and that food just doesn't tase the same. His scalp is itchy (but things could be a lot worse) Do you know anything about the metallic taste? Do you know of anything that can help this. Thanks so much for your time! :P

Moderator, I am thinking you will move these last two posts????? I think it would be good to have out there.

As far as the metallic taste, my dad had a bit of this. More than anything, nothing tastes the same as it used to. It drives him (and my mom) crazy. He says he wants something, and then after it is cooked and such, he tries to eat it, and he hates it. Urgh! I can say this hasn't much gotten better.

Good luck!

Karen, Yes I had that taste in my mouth and I started using plastic forks and spoons. It has disappeared over the years but I still use plastic when I have a choice. Tell your dad things will begin to taste better in time. Its just the meds and all the changes.

I hope you will allow a visitor from England, but I have to say how delighted I was to read such positive reactions to this terrible disease. My husband, Michael, was diagnosed with limited stage small cell lung cancer, in June 2005, and when I searched for information, working on the principle that knowledge is power, I couldn't find any UK site that wasn't all doom and gloom. I realise it is wrong to give false hope but a glimmer would have been good.

My wonderful husband has now had clear scans since the end of his treatment, which was 4 chemo, 25 radiotherapies plus 5 to the head. Michael started a website in which in writes about his treatment journey and by telling this hopes to give support to fellow sufferers. http://www.johnnytherazor.co.uk

Michael's philosophy was very similar to Don's approach, be positive, take control and beat the little alien growing inside!!!

Don's point about 'being fat' rang a bell. All the consultants we saw in the Oncology Dept were always delighted that Michael had put on so much weight, 'it's a really great sign' they would say. Actually he has gained even more weight over the past two years, so much so that we are both going to start a diet in the New Year. If we don't we'll have to buy complete sets of 'larger' clothes!!!

I do have one issue that doesn't get mentioned much and that is the psychological effect that cancer has on the survivor and their family. The past year have been very difficult emotionally, for a long time Michael refused to take anti-depressants, which made my life exceedingly difficult. Eventually, I admitted I just couldn't cope and had six counselling sessions in conjunction with medication. Fortunately, Michael realised how much better I was and finally agreed to take medication. He is so much better now and is currently waiting for counselling with the Macmilllan Psychologist (they are the UK's cancer specialists).

Keep the faith, stay positive and enjoy yourself.

With thanks and love

Lynn

Well 7 Jan 08 was my 5 year mark. PET scan in Dec shows NED and MRI in Dec well lets say it is questionable. They want another MRI in mid Feb. Seems there is a spot but they really didnt think it was cancer but couldnt explain what it is. I will humor them and take another test. I wish I could tell you that I am cured but it seems that most onc's still believe that sclc is always there once you have had it and that it will return. Question is when but the bigger question is what will you do with your life in the meantime?

God Bless

Don

PS Anybody seen my fat cow?

Just got my results for last weeks PET scan and MRI. Everything is great and no sign of cancer anywhere. They still want a repeat in 6 months of my head because of small vessel or something like that but no PET's for 1 year now. Thank God and all the prayers.

I wish all of you the best and all I can say is keep fighting.

Don

PS My hip replacements are working great and I am still breaking horses and chasing cows.

Don,

You are such an inspiration! Your common sense approach and mental outlook are so logical. Congratulations on your milestones, and I hope I can follow your lead! As I tell my friends and family, I have too many more people left to annoy, before I check out.

God bless us all and may he continue to give us the strength to keep up the battle!

Katie
