I have a friend who took cisplatin for a different type of cancer and he lost his hair. The PA told me to be gentle with my hair - don't wash it every day, try to minimize use of hair dryers and curling irons, etc. I hope this helps. Here is a picture I grabbed on line. I gave up trying to count them. Moreover, the scope of the questions introduces complexity. Is it just the lungs, thoracic cavity, chest, the answer kind of depends on what one considers the lung. More importantly, why are you asking? Stay the course. Mally Posted January 31, 2017 Author Share Posted January 31, 2017 I had my first oncology appointment today and my lung cancer is nsclc stage 3 and i will start chemo within the next 2 weeks and it will be with Gemsitabine and Carboplatin and for 6 rounds of day 1 then day 8 then day 22 so anyone had these 2 chemos? Tom Galli Posted January 31, 2017 Share Posted January 31, 2017 Mally, I had one of your chemo pairing -- carboplatin. i didn't have the other: Gemcitabine or Gemzar. But, I've known many who've had this pairing with carboplatin and it is effective. I can't answer your question about why chemotherapy and not surgery given your staging at III. Here is a good illustration of the description of Stage IIIA and Stage IIIB. There are several significant differences between the two and lymph node involvement is key. I don't know which of the seven nodes showed cancer but if they are distant from your primary tumor, the likely conclusion is surgery is not an option. Ask your chemo nurse to explain the reason. If he or she doesn't know, they will contact the oncologist but I've found chemo nurses to be very knowledgable about my cancer situation and good sources of information. Did your doctor tell you surgery might occur after chemotherapy? I note you are not having radiation and perhaps they are administering pre-surgical chemo to address the cancer in the lymph nodes before surgically removing the tumor. That is what we sometimes call "dust-up" chemo after surgery. If so, let's hope it clears the lymph nodes. Stay the course. I would guess that not all mutations have great new treatments, but that's just me assuming. Mally Posted February 13, 2017 Author Share Posted February 13, 2017 I got a copy of the letter my oncologist sent to my gp and it states that i have 111A stage and negative for mutations an i was going to be given 4 rounds of cisplatin and vinorelbine chemo but decided because i have diabetes and heart disease and this combination can cause neuropathy and as a high volume of fluid is required and that can put a strain on the heart so the better choice would be to have 6 cycles of carboplatin and gemcitabine which he said is equally effective....i hope so ..Sent from my SM-N920I using Tapatalk Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
