Cheryncp123 got a reaction from Pattymac in A tribute to my mother in law Mrs. Eleanor McBride
I wrote this poem for my precious mother in law who lost her battle with colon cancer. I wanted everyone that did not have the pleasure of knowing her before her illness that she was so much more than that, and so are you. I hope you enjoy it.

    My name is Eleanor

I have cancer, but it is not who I am.
I am not a number or the result of a
    lab test.
    My name is Eleanor
I am a baby at my mothers breast.
I am a toddler being thrown high in
the air by my father and giggling.
I am a young girl playing with my
    dolls and my trucks.
I am a teenage girl going on my
first date full of nervous anticipation.
I am graduating high school and
trying to figure out what next.

I am a young woman walking down
the aisle with the love of my life.
I am an employee and a homemaker
    I am a new mother.
I love my family, my friends, roses, cooking
    and reading.
I love watching sappy old movies and
going through a box of tissues while
    munching on popcorn.
I love to dance and sing.

    I am a woman, a wife, a mother, a sister,
    a granddaughter,a niece, an aunt, I am
a grandmother and a great grandmother.
I am all of these things and more but what
I am not is a disease.
I have cancer and it may destroy my body
but it cannot touch my spirit or my soul.
So you see although my body may have cancer it does
    not have me.
    My name is Eleanor.

I too am ALK positive. Although the surgery was successful in removing the cancer from my lung and lymph node, I had to have chemo and radiation simultaneously. I am currently cancer free, but still get checked every 3 months. I am also relieved to know there is another line of defence if it were to reoccur.   Keytrude has now been approved to 1st line for lung cancer.

I am one of those patients with the ALK mutation, and have been taking Xalkori (crizintonib)for the past 9 months - exceeding the predicted time before resistance sets in.
Currently in complete remission....... watch this space.

Its so good to know there are second and third line defenses after this one stops working.......

I am an ALKie also. I have been on Xakori (crizotinib) now for 15 months and am still stable. So glad to know there is another line of defense if and when the Xalkori becomes ineffective.
Update: after being on Xalkori for 29 months with great results I began having some progression so was switched to Alecensa (alectinib) 5 months ago and it is working even better than the Xalkori with fewer side effects. So thankful for all the advances in lung cancer treatments.

Cheryncp123 got a reaction from LexieCat in Lets hear about the positive side of lung cancer
Although there are probably not any "positives" to the disease itself, there are wonderful positives that come from your diagnosis
I realized that everyday IS a gift from God...treat it as such
I realized that my family is what keeps me moving forward everyday....love them
I realized that my friends love and support me always...be grateful for them
I realized that there are many people worse off than myself...do what I can to help them
I realized that I can not take one minute of one day for granted or my family members or my friends, ever
I realized I can make a difference in the life of someone that is suffering...be that difference
I realized that God came into this world with me and He will be the one that goes out of this world with me, I will put Him first in my life for the rest of my life.

I totally understand how you feel. Once you get a cancer diagnosis of any kind it changes you. I am so happy to know you are doing so well and caught it early which is so important for our survival.

    Mally,
Right! Anxious time to next scan.
Remember, lung cancer is persistent so keep your game face on. The 6 month scan interval is a good sign but it is just a sign.
Most important is to be doing something you enjoy while surfing your NED. You got the promise of treatment -- extra life. Now have fun!
    Stay the course.

Mally, my last scans we're 6 months apart however the most recent scan showed a new area of concern so I am back to every 3 months for now. I had been NED for 26 months on a targeted therapy drug, that is the reason my doc extended the time between scans. I think maybe 6 months might have been a little too far apart. I am only speaking from my own experience and I know insurance dictates the number and frequency of scans allowed.

I'm on a 90 day scan cycle.  Super Doc says when I go 2 years without a recurrence, he'll move me to the 6 month cycle.

I am fortunate to have a big family and many friends including my church family who have been literally a life saver for me. I hope you can get connected with a church or a local cancer support group, no one needs to go through this alone.

I would like to hear how others deal with the ups and downs of this disease. Just about the time I have shoved it out of my mind and gotten on with the business of living a scan comes due and the scanxiety that comes with that then something shows up on the scan and the wait to see the doctor starts. How do you deal with these highs and lows?

Thanks so much for your responses. It really helps to know that there are others who really understand and I can talk to. I have felt bad the last week. The weather here has been windy & rainy. My allergies are all flared up & cough is worse. I just stayed in this weekend & rested. I have felt better today. Just trying to stay positive and be ready for surgery. My pulmonologist is going to do a referral to oncology so they will be on board if needed. I pray you all continue to do well & I appreciate your prayers.

Brenda, you will have good days and bad days, highs and lows. Just stay in the moment don't let your thoughts run away with you. When you feel good enjoy every minute and when you don't take a time out to baby yourself. When you feel up to it keep busy that will keep your mind from going to those dark places. I hope this day is a good one?

Brenda, I am sorry to hear that your cousin has been diagnosed with lung cancer, you will be able to support each other and understand. I believe that the stage of your cancer does not change. Staging only means the cancer has metastasized to other areas. You can be in complete remission but your initial staging does not change at least that is what I have been told. I hope that is helpful.
