This is my sister-in-laws dad. He and Mike have been fighting together, but Richard lost his battle. Richard A. Starkey, 56 ,of Zanesville died at 1:46 PM, Saturday, June 9, 2007 at James Cancer Center Of Ohio State Univ. in Columbus following a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born on Sunday, August 20, 1950, in Newark the son of Harold A. & Erna (Sandman) Starkey. He was a mould maker for Anchor Glass and had been employed there since the age of 18. He was a member of Northside Church Of The Nazarene, American Flint & Glass Workers Union Local #121 and American Motorcycle Association. Richard enjoyed spending time with his family, riding motorcycles and playing softball. He is survived by his wife Dixie D. (Pritt) Starkey of the home who he married on Saturday Feb. 14, 1976; his children Melissa (Ron) Miller, Jeremy (Jennifer) Starkey both of Zanesville; Grandchildren: Colt , Dalton , and Quinton Miller, Amber and Chance Starkey; A brother: Donald (Cathy) Starkey of Zanesville; A sister Helena (Dan) Archer of Hopewell; Uncles Carl Sandman and Dean Wise; Be loved mother-in-law Velva Pritt, several close Nieces, Nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law; & his faithful pet dog Taz. He was preceded in death in addition to his parents by his Aunts Mary Wise and Linda Sandman. Friends may call Tuesday June 12th from 2-4 and 6-8pm at the Hillis & Hardwick Funeral Home, 935 Forest Ave. where funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at 1:00 PM with Rev. James A. Miller officiting. Burial will follow in Zanesville Memorial Park, in Zanesville, OH

Mike is doing this right now. It appears to be working for him based on CT Scan. He will have a PET scan in July that will tell us more.

Don, I am so sorry to read that you are leaving. You and Lucy have touched my life in ways that you will never know. I understand your need to move on in your life and it sounds as if you have found a great ministry to do that. I wish you well in all that you do. It would be nice if you could check in from time to time so that we know that you are doing ok, but we understand if that is too difficult for you. Your understanding, love and support will be greatly missed by all here now and those who come later. Good Luck!

I haven't been posting much lately. I have been busy with the kids and taking a break. Mike is still getting Alimta and Avastin and doing fine. The kids are out of school next week,so things should calm down for me then. Still Praying for You All!

Maryanne, Sorry for the delay in posting. Things are crazy here with radiation everyday and chemo once a week. Mike had taxotere and is getting it again. He had some pain with that. Our first time with cheno, they added neulasta after a few rounds. He was in tremendous pain. He was working on the truck at his mom and dads with a friend of his and he called me to tell me that his friend was taking him to the ER. He was in so much pain, that he thought for sure that he broke something. He was hurting in his back and legs, so he thought that he had hurt himself bad trying to break a bolt loose on the truck. Well, come to find out, he did not hurt himself. It was the Neulasta. I was not with him, so he was going into detail about what happened and the longer we talked on the phone, the more he felt that it was from the Neulasta. I reminded him that was a side effect. (They tell you there will be pain, but they don't tell you that you will feel like you are dying or wishing you were dead.) The wait at the ER was hours, so he called his oncologist and he said it was probably from the Neulasta. He told him to take two vicodine and an 800 mg Ibupropen and wait a couple of hours and see if he got any relief. He came home instead of waiting there so he could lay down and rest. He soaked in a hot tub and then the pills kicked in and he was much better. He continued to take the ibupropen for about three days. The next time he had to get the shot, we started the pills before the shot and continued on them for a few days. He had some pain each time, but he never had that kind of pain after that. We tried to prevent it instead of getting it under control after the fact. He had to have the chemo and the shot, so we were doing whatever we could to get through. He did not have these side effects until they added the shot. I know what you went through. Neulasta kicked Mike's butt. He was scared to death and I was so upset because I wasn't with him, but it hit all of the sudden and he was fine before that. I hope that Joel does not need them in the future, but if he does, start taking the meds before so that you can keep it under control. Let me know if I can help in any other way. I have to know. Not knowing drives me crazy. I think that is what makes this so hard is not knowing and not being able to plan.

Thanks for the prayers. We survived the first day. It wasn't too bad. I think the nerves because of the unknown were the worst part. Thanks so much for all of your support. I couldn't make it without all of you!

Well, things weren't too bad. The chemo was the same two that he had before just at a much lower dose. The radiation was nothing really. I just hope the side effects don't get too bad. Thanks for all of the advice. I could not survive this without all of you!

It is a great place to come to when you need those extra words of encoragement. I could not have survived without the support of this group! My husband is 34 and we have two kids too, a son 11 and a daughter 5. I understand how difficult this is for you. I have been there. Voted on the way to the doctor. We had computer polls for the first time. Pretty easy and fast!
