    My mom

I posted very few times, but I read the forums. My mom joined here, but I don't think she ever posted. She passed on July 12, 2008 with my dad and I holding each hand. I just wanted to post the obituary my dad wrote in her memory. Thank you for such a good community. Even though she and I didn't interact much with everyone here, it was, and will be appreciated. http://www.legacy.com/Birmingham/DeathNotices.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonID=113365203 Susan Morgan Otts OTTS, SUSAN MORGAN, Loving wife, mother and grandmother, was carried home in the arms of angels to meet her Lord and Savior on July 12, 2008. A member of Gardendale First Baptist Church and a lifetime resident of Gardendale, Susan was a graduate of Gardendale High School and later attended Jacksonville State University. She was active in the PTA and other civic organizations in support of her children. One of her favorite hobbies was oil painting. Susan is survived by her husband, Tommy; her daughter, Kristina and granddaughter, Salihah; her son, Brian and granddaughter, Chloe; her parents, Albert and Bessie Morgan; her brother Terrell, his wife Phyllis and daughters, Amy and Ashley. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. with burial in Oakwood Memorial Gardens. Rev. Mark Harrison officiating. Visitation will be Monday, July 14, 2008 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Gardendale Chapel directing 631-6252
  2. I struggle with kind of the same battle. My mom quit smoking about 2 years before she was diagnosed with SCLC (she smoked for about 30 years). I am, unfortunately, still a smoker, and it is such a battle with the ironical stress of "I just want to smoke a cigarette" and "This is what my mom is fighting." I don't know how to put it to a non smoker, but it's just not easy. I really don't have much to contribute, but I understand why you are disheartened by this. I am by my own smoking and my dad's, but hard times are the hardest times to quit. I've cut down a lot but there are times when I just breakdown. I'm sorry, I'm sure it's so hard to understand from your position
  3. Woohoo! Awesome news! Grats, time to party

Best of luck Joanie, I will be thinking of you. Since I'm new to all of this, I'm certainly not one to be giving advice, but I am wishing you the best, and hoping you don't worry yourself silly
  6. You seem like such a strong woman! My prayers and thoughts are with you, best of luck!
  7. Thanks guys. She was very tired today, I guess to be expected, otherwise doing well. I am also impressed my parents thought to bring a tape recorder (and use it!)... I'm not sure I would have thought of that lol. Once again, you guys are awesome, I'm so happy I found this place! There is so much "negative" information on the internet, it's great to find a place where people are so warm and caring, and in lots of cases beating the odds! I feel like I've been on an emotional rollercoaster lately, but reading you guys positive thoughts, and seeing - hey I'm not the only one going through this, and furthermore, I'm not even the one *actually* going through it makes me feel a lot more positive. I'm realizing cancer can't beat love, hope, inner strength and support unless you let it. Much love and respect for everyone here.
  8. Hey guys, newcomer here. I posted yesterday for the first time in the newcomer's forum. Today we received not quite the news we were hoping for about my mom. The doctor said it was extensive SCLC because it was in some lymph nodes in her neck. However (this is all secondhand per my dad), the doctor said that was debatable limited/extensive so I guess that is good. They recorded what the doctor said, so I will listen to it when my dad emails it to me. I, however, like to think the diagnosis is mainly to get her involved in this clinical trial she is participating in (ext SCLC only). The chemo went well today, she says she feels fine (she was mainly bored to death lol), but this stuff has some weird side effects. I will get back to you with names of medicine after I hear the tape, or maybe someone here will know and tell me . She's not supposed to touch or ingest anything cold or the doctor said it would be like hitting her funny bone (painfully strangely tingly I guess). Also, she will be doing the "rough" medicine 1 day a week - rest for 2 weeks - 3 day treatments - rest for 2 weeks - rough medicine 1 day. Anyway, I'll update more as I find out, just wanted to post. Hope you all are well.
  9. Thanks all for such a warm welcome, and encouraging words. She is a sweet, wonderful woman, and I know she has the strength to pull through this. It's still hitting home how all of our lives (especially hers) have completely changed forever in the span of a week. Thanks again for the prayers and support.
  10. My mom was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer last week. She will start chemo tomorrow and find out the results from PET scan and MRI to get definitive dx on limited (hopefully). I have started reading your forums and you seem like a great bunch of supportive people. I also gave her the link, so hopefully she will read and register. Just wanted to post and say hello
