    Advice Please

Hi Karen, Thank you for your reply 🙂 A biopsy of both nodules was taken, two samples were obtained. The doctor who did the biopsy is a radiologist. The lymph nodes were not biopsied and I don’t know what’s going on with them, all I know is that there is extensive lymph node involvement in the middle of my chest. Possible inflammation? Both of the nodules are 13mm. I live in Canada and patients here don’t usually see an oncologist until they are diagnosed with cancer. The doctor that has been heading this investigation has been a thoracic surgeon. I’m hanging … lol 😂 Thank you!

    Advice Please

Background: 54 yr old female. Thyroid cancer in 2014, heart disease/open heart surgery 2016, Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2017. My mom passed away 25 yrs ago at the age of 49. She wasn’t feeling well, went to hospital on a Tuesday, chest X ray showed nodules in her lungs. Two days later, on Thursday she had a biopsy, she died that night. An autopsy revealed that her body was full of cancer, the primary tumour from her lungs. My journey so far. I have had two CT scans and a PET scan. I have two 13mm nodules in my right upper lung both Hypermetabolic, irregular, somewhat spiculated. PET scan indicated one nodule absorbed the tracer with SUV of 5.6 Extensive mediastinal and periportal lymphadenopathy in addition to a splenic focus A focus of uptake in the descending colon 15mm with SUV of 10 I had a biopsy one week ago and am awaiting the results. The radiologist told me that if the biopsy comes back inconclusive, they could try a second biopsy or remove the nodules. Last week’s biopsy was one of the most painful experiences I’ve ever had. The Dr accidentally hit a nerve and I had severe pain for the next 24 hrs. I do not want to go through that again. Given the above, if the results are inconclusive, is it unreasonable to want the nodules removed? I don’t know anyone that has been on this journey, that’s the reason I’m reaching out. I’m hopeful that the biopsy will be conclusive but I also want to be prepared if a diagnosis isn’t possible. Thoughts? Thank you 🙏🏼
  3. Actually…one more question 😉 The report also states that there is a “focus of uptake in the descending colon (SUV 10, 15mm) may represent a polyp an endoscopic correlation is recommended.” *I understand it means that there was an uptake in the descending colon, may be a polyp and suggesting further testing. But what would the 15mm represent? Thank you!
  4. Tom, Thank you so much for your excellent explanation, I really appreciate it. I am scheduled for a biopsy on December 30th. One more question, if you don’t mind. I have “extensive mediastinal and periportal lymphadenopathy, in addition to a splenic focus.” Will the biopsy include a sample from lymph nodes? Do you know what splenic focus means? Congrats on your NED that is wonderful!! Enjoy the best of the holiday season and Merry Christmas to you 🎄 Carrie
  5. English please 😉 Hypermetabolic, irregular subpleural nodule in the right upper lobe (SUV 5.8, 13mm) What does hypermetabolic mean? SUV = Standardized uptake value: The amount of tracer that was absorbed The number is 5.8 but can anyone tell me what the range is or how I might be able to find a chart. Would I be correct in interpreting this as a 13mm nodule in the RUL that is likely malignant BUT obviously would need to be confirmed by biopsy. Thank you and Merry Christmas 🎄 Carrie
  6. Hi Tom, Thank you so much for the information. I have three nodules, two in the right upper lung, one in the middle lung. Then it just says multiple lymph nodes in the pre vascular space. I wasn’t exactly sure what the surgeon’s role is as it relates to lung cancer. Sounds like you went through quite a lot before you received your diagnosis. Congrats on 19 years! Carrie
  7. Hi Everyone, Tuesday I have my first appointment with the surgeon to go over my chest CT. If a biopsy is recommended, what questions should I think about asking? Thank you, Carrie

    It’s Cancer…

Hi Everyone, My doctor called me Friday a the end of the day. He had received the report from the chest CT that I had had Tuesday, I also received a copy and we went over it. He told me that I have cancer. FINDINGS: 2 spiculated nodules are seen in the apical segment of the right upper lobe, one sub plural spiculated nodule measuring 1.6 x 1.6 cm and a second just adjacent to this measuring 1.7 x 1.4 cm. Subpleural nodule in the middle lobe measuring 3mm. Multiple enlarged mediastinal nodes, the largest being a precarinal node measuring 1.3cm, aortopulmonary node measuring 0.8, subcarinal node measuring 1.1cm right hilar node measuring 1.2cm. Multiple smaller nodes are scattered throughout the mediastinum superiorly. CONCLUSION: Two right upper pulmonary nodules as described with associated mediastinal and hilar lymphadenopathy. The differential diagnosis includes a primary malignancy with a satellite or metastatic disease with the former more likely given the location of the nodules. An urgent respirology opinion is recommended. Next Step? I am being referred to a thoratic surgeon to schedule a biopsy. He said that we need to determine it it’s a lung cancer or if it started elsewhere and spread to lungs and lymph nodes. Really unsure of the process, what happens next, what to expect. Carrie
  9. Just in case anyone else is curious about this question, the chest CT does cover armpits and lymph nodes in that area.
  10. Hi Everyone, Had my CT yesterday, awaiting report. Looking through images, curious, is this supposed to look like this? NOT looking for a diagnosis, just opinions based on experience. Carrie
  11. Hi @Holliday I have not been diagnosed with lung cancer. I do have two nodules in my right upper lung and I have a chest CT scheduled for November 8th. I also had thyroid cancer in 2014, I had a thyroidectomy and one dose of radiation and have been cancer free since. I’m sorry to hear of your lung cancer diagnosis and that you’re going through this. Does the lung cancer have anything to do with the thyroid cancer. Wishing you all the very best, Carrie
  12. Morning Karen, That’s a great idea, thank you 😊 Carrie
  13. Hi Everyone 😃 I have an upcoming CT scan of my chest. I’m wondering, will the scan cover my armpits/lymph nodes in that area? I’ve had some swelling and tenderness/pain on the right side, same side the nodules in my lung were located. So, I just want to make sure that area will also be covered. I have googled it but I’m not clear on the answer. Thank you, Wishing you all a terrific day! Carrie
  14. Thanks Lou, it was helpful 🙂 Carrie
  15. I couldn’t figure out how to reply to each of your messages so thank you all for reading and replying to mine, I really appreciate it. Lou and Tom, thank you so much for all the information. Lou, I am curious about something. I understand that benign nodules rarely grow. So when people are diagnosed with a nodule, say 16mm and it is benign, how did it get to that size. I assumed that it started out smaller and grew to that size but based on that info, that obviously isn’t the case. Does it just appear at that size? Mihn and Judy, thank you both your replying as well. Interesting info Mihn and Judy, I too hope that it turns out to be nothing. Everything crossed 🤞
