  1. Hello Deb and welcome, I am sorry to hear about your mother. You got some very good advice here already, but I want to add that a nice chat with your mom's doctor is probably very, very much in order. If her strange behaviour is being brought on by the treatment meds, the dr should really be made aware. He may be able to change something to help improve this. Randy's link is an excellent one. ChemoBrain is, unfortunately, one of the side effects that some people do suffer. This disease and its treatments are so cruel.. Please keep us posted and let us know how we can help you. Sending prayers to you and your mom and your family, Chris
  2. I am giggling as I type this.. I found this site through an AOL, POWERED BY GOOGLE search. Wow, it really is a small world! Chris
  3. Hi Sharon, I have been reading your thread here and omg. I am so sorry about all of this! I cannot believe how incredibly insenstive your employers are being, but I guess they probably are looking at it more from the business standpoint rather than the human side. SAD! I cannot add much to the great advice you have gotten from Grace and Ry, but this did cross my mind as I was reading your latest update. As for the medications, contact the manufacturers, explain your situation and see if they can help you out. I know that most of them offer programs that will either help you financially with the cost or supply them to you at no cost. It is certainly worth looking into. I wish you all the best in this fight and please keep us posted! Hugs Chris
  4. Terrye My only advice to you, and you will hear this over and over and over.. take this one step at a time. Cancer is a very overwhelming illness. It takes an enormous toll on not only the patient, the family, friends and caregivers. Try not to get ahead of yourselves. Ask the doctors as many questions as you need to. Get a notebook or an organizer, write down every detail from the tests, treatments and appointments, and write down all your questions and concerns so you will not forget them during the appointments. We are all here for you, all you need to do is keep posting and let us know how we can help. There are so many of us who have been in your position, we do understand and we do care. Hugs and prayers, Chris
  5. Shirley My prayers continue and adding a few extra as well. Hugs Chris

  9. Northwest Biotherapeutics Receives FDA Clearance For Lung Cancer Trial 08 Sep 2006 Northwest Biotherapeutics, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: NWBT.OB) today announced that it has received FDA clearance to proceed with Phase I clinical testing of its personalized therapeutic cancer vaccine, DCVax®-LB, in non-small cell lung cancer. The clinical endpoints of the trial will be progression-free survival (i.e., delay in progression of the cancer) and overall survival. DCVax®-LB is an extension of the promising DCVax® personalized cancer vaccine that has already shown significant delay in disease progression and in extension of survival in clinical trials in two other cancers: Glioblastoma multiforme (primary brain cancer) and prostate cancer. DCVax® is a therapeutic vaccine, which is used to treat patients who already have cancer. DCVax® is a personalized treatment: it is made from a patient's own dendritic cells that have been "educated" to teach the immune system to recognize and kill cancer cells bearing the biomarkers of the patient's tumor. "The same DCVax® platform can be used for the treatment of many different tumor types, since it incorporates all of the biomarkers from the patient's tumor," stated Dr. Alton Boynton, President of Northwest Biotherapeutics. "DCVax®-LB offers several key advantages over existing FDA-approved treatments. To date, DCVax® product candidates have shown no toxicity, and have been compatible with other standard therapeutic regimens, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In addition, clinical data on delay in disease progression and extension of survival in brain and prostate cancer to date are remarkable." Lung cancer deaths in the US alone are over 160,000 per year as compared to 30,350 deaths per year for prostate cancer. Existing treatments for non-small cell lung cancer include surgery and radiation therapy, which are used in various combinations. These treatments have significant adverse side effects, and have had little effect on survival. Likewise, chemotherapies used in lung cancer have been highly toxic and have had little effect on survival. In its most recent study, the National Institutes of Health reported that the five-year survival rate for non-small cell lung cancer patients was only 6.2% during 1989-1996. Following initial treatment, virtually all cases of this cancer recur, with a life expectancy of only about one year following recurrence. No effective therapy exists for these patients today. About Northwest Biotherapeutics Northwest Biotherapeutics is a biotechnology company focused on developing immunotherapy products that treat cancers more effectively than current treatments, without toxicity, on a cost-effective basis. The Company has two broad platform technologies: dendritic cell-based vaccines, and therapeutic antibodies. The Company's three lead product candidates are: DCVax® -Prostate, a personalized dendritic cell vaccine for treatment of hormone independent non-metastatic prostate cancer, which is entering a Phase III clinical trial recently cleared by the FDA; DCVax®-Brain, a personalized dendritic cell vaccine for treatment of newly diagnosed Glioblastoma multiforme, which is entering a large Phase II clinical trial recently cleared by the FDA; and monoclonal antibodies to CXCR4, which are in late preclinical development for the treatment of cancer. 10. Welthy and Tony Congrats on both milestones and best wishes for many more in both! Chris
  11. Hello Shannon and Welcome I am sorry you had the reason to find this site, but glad you have posted and told us about your step dad. First and foremost, DO NOT PAY ANY ATTENTION TO THE STATISTICS! Statistics are numbers, many outdated and your step father is NOT a number. You cannot apply those to any single person. Your step fathers reaction to this seems to be typical. I agree with the others that an antidepressant might be very helpful. As for his smoking, once he is able to come to grips with the initial shock of the diagnosis, he may well change his attitude about that. Please keep posting here, keep us updated on the treatments, dr visits, ask any and all questions you have and know that we are all here to help you along this journey. Maybe you can even get your step father to at least read some of our survivor stories and see that there is HOPE. He might even think about joining us himself. Let us know how we can help, Chris
  12. Just a thought here, for what it's worth.. If your husband is taking the liquid form and the med is that yucky tasting, could it be mixed in something like applesauce to make it a bit more tasty? I would venture a guess that the dr is trying to get your hubby to eat a bit more to get his strength up. This disease takes so much out of a person and the treatments are so hard as well.. Wishing you and your hubby all the best, Chris
