  1. Hello Friends,

It sure has been a difficult month. One month ago today my father went in the hospital with pneumonia, stayed for two weeks, came home for one and now has been in the medical center for two weeks.

Since then we found out, no more chemo, he needed too many transfusions from his one Gemzar session. No radiation, tumor has grown too close to the node he had radiated back in November. So, we pray for a miracle or that Iressa is for him. He has been taking it since Wednesday. He does have some itching that he needed Benadryl for - do you think thats a good sign? I also want to get him to the nutrition/vitamin doc as soon as he is strong enough. Im praying that is where he can be healed too.

They talked to us about hospice, explaining we shouldnt be put off by the word, that it is not a death sentence, there are people that become stronger and dont need hospice anymore. We are praying my father is

one of them. You are the first people I am even saying it to, because I know you understand. I cant bring myself to say it to the people in my life.

Every day he is improving and is certainly better than he was a month ago when he went in for pneumonia.

Any prayers for him are so very much appreciated by our whole family.

You are prayed for every night as well. I love you guys. Thank you again to those of you who sent me cards, I would come home after a long day at the hospital and find them on my table, it meant so much.

  2. Sandy,

I know you were going for some testing and wanted to know how everything is going. I may have missed your post, hopefully, in GOOD NEWS! Praying for you.

  3. Dear Cheryl,

I know it must be so frustrating after all you have been through to still be watching and waiting. But, with all you are doing otherwise to keep your body healthy, I know you are going to be fine. With all your treatments you have told us about, you will create an environment in your body that wil not allow the cancer to be able to live and multiply. With that combined with your faith ------ need I say more!!!!!!????

  4. Thank you everyone for responding to this post. I asked my father's oncologist what he thought and he said he supported the supplements but not the macrobiotics.

I am praying my father gets well enough so I can take him to the alternative doc I had made an appt with.

Thank you again, your input gave so much food for thought!

  5. THIS IS WONDERFUL NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have really been through a lot and this WONDERFUL NEWS is an inspiration to all of us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Im so happy for you,Ray!!!!!

  6. Hello Friends,

My father had pain in his right side the other night (he is in the hospital); so they did an xray and saw some fluid. (Only in right lung; left lung is clear) He was given lasix in his IV. The next day they said it was gone from one area but there was still some. They were going to give it one more day and if it was still there they would drain it. My question is this: Is this a good sign that the lasix got rid of most of it? Does that mean its not cancerous? Can you build up fluid from time to time with lung cancer and it not be cancerous?

Does fluid stop you from having radiation?

He will begin Iressa soon. I feel like I will be waiting for him to get the rash. Can you have success without getting the rash or side effects?

Thank you for any help you can give me with these questions and any prayers you can send up for him.

  7. Hello All,

Im gathering some information and wanted your input. My father will start Iressa next week. We havent heard yet about radiation. I have been looking into alternative supplements, but today began looking into the Kushi Institute using macrobiotics. I understand that macrobiotics deals with using the food to heal, and if you have that you dont need supplements. But, I know more about supplements doing research and finding a doctor that other people use and have had success with. So, now Im confused. I want to do the right thing. What is your opinion?

  8. Hello Friends,

Today oncologist told my father that he doesnt want to give him more chemo (he had Gemzar on 1/12 went in hospital two days later with pneumonia - needed a few transfusions). So, he goes for a CT scan tomorrow to see if he can have radiation. Radiation onc said he couldnt tell a lot by the xray. Why wouldnt someone be able to have radiation - if there is some fluid there? Also, he will decide if he will do Iressa together with radiation or after radiation is done. He was put back in the hospital yesterday to help in his recovery with the pneumonia, he is still very tired.

This has been so terrible. My questions are about the radiation and also Iressa - any good success stories?

Thank you so much for anything positive, we could use some good news.

  9. It is so comforting to come here and see all your prayers. We have such faith in that. We didnt get to vitamin doc today, he was too weak. But visiting nurse came and checked him out. Thank you for your continued prayers, he needs them. You are in my prayers every night.

  10. We got back from ER about two hours ago. His dilantin level was low so they gave him IV of that so now he's tired. They dont think he had a seizure, they see his calcium is low and attribute it to that. They were going to do an MRI to see if WBR did its job while he was there but he couldnt get comfortable on the table so we have to do that another time. Monday is our appt with the nutrition/vit doc. I am praying Jesus sends us a healing or leads us towards one. He's tired now from the Dilantin IV. I am begging for your continued prayers, thank you so much.

  11. Dear Friends,

My father has had this twitching which they were attributing to low calcium but I guess it worried my mother enough to call onc this morn who said to bring him to ER to have neurologist check on him. He had had 2 seizures in Nov which found the brain mets. Please pray the WBR worked and this is not mets but just maybe he needs a calcium drip. Thank you so much.

  12. Sweet Carleen,

Im seeing this post many days late, but Im signing off and will be praying for Keith. By now youve been to your appt but prayers are never too late. Im so glad there are these options for him. And by him doing these things, it paves the way for so many others. You two are such special people.

We know JUST how you feel. That will happen to me - crying comes from left field; numbness sets in; you feel like youre watching your life happen to someone else. Im glad you posted; I wish I had seen it sooner.

    Love to you, friend.

  13. Hi KC,

Youve been given excellent advice above. My father is only 64 too and has battled cancer before this lung cancer(see my signature). So, chemo is hard on him. He did have IMRT (intense modulated radiation therapy) high dose radiation right to tumor sparing surrounding tissue, little or no side effects. They couldnt complete his though, because he then was found to have brain mets so we had to work on that.

We are now looking into vitamin supplements/nutrition/alternative treatments. We go to a doc that specializes in this on Monday. Chemo is hard on him because of his history. We also, pray A LOT!!!

I have two sisters and we are close to my father, I have three daughters who adore him too. We've brought him to Healing Masses, Anointing of the Sick, Sloan Kettering in NYC for second opinion and now to this alternative doc.

Dont be discouraged by the bone mets. Radiation can be used to alleviate pain. Sounds like the chemo was doing some shrinkage too, so that is great!!!

I, too, begged the surgeon to do the surgery. My father was originally eligible as he was diagnosed at IIIa, but the day before the surgery; surgeon biopsied a suspicious supraclavicular node which turned out to be cancerous; moving him to IIIb - ineligible for surgery. I understand why now. If the cancer has the ability to move out of the lung; or in your dad's case to the other lung; you have to work on stopping the spread. A lobectomy is a major operation with major recovery. Surgeon explained that time is better used stopping the spread.

Please dont be discouraged; tell your father not to be either. There is so much out there and youve had shrinkage so far. Also, some people on this board have discussed RFA for liver mets, I dont know much about it, but maybe you could see if its something for your dad, or maybe the chemo is taking care of it.

Keep us posted!!!! DONT GIVE UP!!!

  14. I read Patrick Quillan's book, "Beating Cancer with Nutrition". In the back of that book there was a list of doctors who practice alternative medicine. I gave my father the book to read so I dont have it in front of me or I would just list them. They were from all over, so Im sure you can find one in CA. That doesnt mean you need to rule out chemo or radiation. My father and I will be visiting a doc like this soon, but we are not ruling out other treatments, but only you know what is best for you. This book was very comprehensive in explaining how the vitamin and mineral supplements can help you along with good nutrition. You can go to Amazon.com to order it.
