  1. Hello, I haven't seen any posts from you lately and was wondering how your mom was doing? I hope she has gotten stronger. Was your wedding wonderful? Let me hear from you. Rosemary
  2. Hello, My mother had the huge pleural effusion also. They would drain it and it would come right back. So, she was always very short of breath. She was on 3 liters of oxygen but still felt short of breath. She came to live with me 7 months before she passed away. That is also when she got on the oxygen. The more I was with her I realized she was having anxiety attacks and who wouldn't when they are having trouble breathing! So, I had the doctor prescribe something for the anxiety and that was a huge help. I was so afraid also that when the end came she would be struggling to breath but she seemed to just go to sleep I guess because her oxygen levels were getting so low. So, even though it was terrible losing her it wasn't the horrible death I was fearing. So, if your dad isn't on anti-anxiety meds you might want to check on getting him some. Hope this helps. Rosemary
  3. Hello, The heavy, weak legs remind me of my mother. She passed away June 6, 2006 at the age of 86. She lived 6 weeks after being diagnosed with stage IV nsclc. She had 2 tiny mets in her brain so they wanted to do radiation treatments for that before beginning chemo. She did very well until the 7th treatment and then her legs got heavier and heavier until she could barely get around. I never did find out if that was caused by the radiation or by the steriods. She finished her treatments but passed away a week later. She went down very quickly after the treatments. We had no idea the radiation would be so bad. We were more concerned about the chemo. I hope your mom does better since she is a lot younger than my mom. I pray for peace for you. I know how stressful it can be. Rosemary
  4. Hello Kathleen, How is your mom doing? I hope she is improving. I've been thinking about you. We went away to the beach for a week and I feel much more refreshed. I still don't really feel like my mother is gone. I don't know why but it just doesn't feel real. Even though I know she is gone I still go into her bedroom and say good night and that I love her. I know it sounds crazy but it makes me feel closer to her. Let me know how you and your family are doing. Rosemary
  5. Hello Again,Kathleen, After my mother finished the 10th radiation treatment she continued to get weaker and weaker. She couldn't get up off the sofa without help, walk to the bathroom alone and barely get in bed. The doctors didn't tell her it could be so bad. She also lost most of her hair. I was just beside myself. She was on 4 mg of steriods once a day. I took her back to the radiation/oncologist on May 30 to have her checked because I was afraid the weakness in her legs was due to her brain being swollen but the doctor did not think so. He felt she should be hospitalized to get more stable. Then I took her to the oncologist and he scheduled her to take her first chemo on June 9! I decided on June 1 to take her back to the hospital because she was declining so much. The doctors told her on June 2 that she was too weak for chemo. She was disappointed but said the doctor didn't know how strong she was and she might do it anyway! She was a fighter and never gave up. On June 5 the doctor said she had only a few days to a week to live. He didn't tell her. I stayed with her like I did every night and she passed away Tuesday morning, June 6, at 1:15 AM. The last day her breathing was very bad. She was buried yesterday, June 9. I am so sad and miss her so much already. I hope your mom is doing better. Rosemary
  6. The oncologist said the MRI of the brain showed 2 tiny spots. Not positive it is from the lung cancer, but most likely and too much of a risk to biopsy. So, she will have 10 radiation treatments before starting chemo. Not sure when she will have the port-a-cath put in since this came up. The surgeon said they wouldn't be able to put it in her chest because she is so thin. May put it in her arm. She is going to consult with another doctor. No results yet on the PET scan. She is in good spirits. She has fought cancer before. Had her left breast removed (radical procedure) due to cancer in 1968 followed by 6 weeks of cobalt (wonder if this caused the lung cancer). Melanoma on collar bone about 15 years ago and basal cell on her eyelid a year and a half ago.
  7. My mom is seeing the oncologist and the surgeon this morning. I don't know why she is seeing the oncologist they just said it is a "follow-up". I feel it must be to give results of the PET scan and MRI of the brain. The surgeon is to get set-up for the port-a-cath. My husband is taking her for the appointments since it is easier for him to take off work. I will take her for the surgery and the first chemo. I am so stressed and nervous wondering what the doctors will say to her. Please pray for no more bad news.
  8. My mother recently moved in with me. She was diagnosed with stage IV non-small cell lung cancer 10 days ago. The oncologist has recommended chemo. She had a PET scan and MRI of the brain in the last few days (no results yet). She will see the oncologist again tomorrow and also the surgeon to set-up having the port-a-cath placed in her chest. The last 2 weeks she has actually seemed to improve as far as not having nausea and her eating improved but yesterday (the day after having the MRI) she seemed unusually sleepy and that worries me. I'm wondering how she will react to the chemo. Anyone else with a person that age that can give me their input would be appreciated.
