  1. Hi dom M Thanky you for yuur post, well i am due a Ct scan after my 3rd round of chemo but this is where it is the controversy starts, first of all i was diagnosed with 1 3.5cm tumour in my right lung, bronchoscopy of the lung and thorax Result( clear) Mediastinoscopy Result ( tumor in right lung 3.5cm Thorax (clear) Mediastinum(clear) so i am diagnosed with localized ardenacarcinoma of the right lung stage 4L whatever that is and i can find no reference anywhere about it.The following week i go to see the oncologist who informs that following a further look of the Ct scan ( which he had for (6 weeks) prior to the bronchoscopy & mediastinoscopy which showed nothing as i said he now says i ha mets in the left lung and some tumours in my mediastinum?? they did a biopsy on one of my nodes which came back clear also. So all of this is based on a (CT scan) my problem is how can they diagnose anything from a ct scan and without a biopsy i have now requested my medical records and i am asking for a meeting with the hospital for a meeting ( what do you think) thanks jim

Hi tinab I have also just joined last week and find the support you receive here is excellent there is always someone to talk to. From what i read you get to get the rest of the amily to accept what is going on with your mil jim :
  3. Just found this article compiled the British Cancer Research Uk. It makes very interesting reading so much so that i am now going to include these in my ongoing chemo treatment i am also including reishi capsules which my freind has so kindly brought me back from the us. i will keep you updated jim Medicinal Mushrooms Support Cancer Treatment Main Category: Cancer / Oncology News Article Date: 15 Aug 2005 - 0:00am (PDT) A major study of medicinal mushrooms by Cancer Research UK is the most comprehensive ever undertaken and was very positive. The popular and wide spread use of medicinal mushrooms in Asia left the researchers wondering why we are not making better use of them in the West. They note, "The huge world wide sales of such products, can testify to the beliefs of many, of their efficacy." The Cancer Research UK team were impressed by "the remarkable ability of many of these non toxic compatible compounds to reduce the debilitating effects of traditional chemo-therapeutic drugs.' Mushrooms have been treasured as remedies for disease and as natural health supports for thousands of years and are an incredibly popular food in most countries. Actually, world trade in mushrooms is as big as the trade in coffee. The Cancer Research UK report continues, "These compounds have been shown to be safe when taken over long periods of treatment and significantly, these compounds appear to reduce the adverse effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. These results are in marked contrast to the well documented adverse side effects associated with most chemo therapeutic compounds and also to a lesser extent, certain immuno therapeutics." More remarkable still they found, "There are also many examples where the use of these compounds allows the reduction in dose level of the toxic chemo therapeutic compound without reduced efficacy." Recent studies in New Zealand show that a combination of Reishi and Cordyceps extracts had beneficial effects on the quality of life for some advanced cancer patients. Researchers believe that a mixture of the active ingredients from different mushrooms maximizes the immune response by providing multiple stimuli to the body's natural defenses. A fully functional immune response is critical to the recognition and elimination of tumor cells. The increased incidence of spontaneous tumors in immunosuppressed individuals indicates that the immune system provides a significant mechanism for resistance against cancer. Several major immune stimulating substances have been isolated from Reishi that have extraordinary effects on the maturation, differentiation and proliferation of many kinds of immune cells. Reishi is a proven potent activator of interferon, interleukins, tumor necrosis factor (TNF), natural killer cells (NK), T lymphocytes, tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL's) and lymphokine activated killer cells (LAK). The spontaneous regression of some tumors is usually explained as a phenomenon of the individual's own immune system attacking the tumor burden. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy invariably damage or weaken the patient's immunological defenses which may also have been damaged by the cancer itself. Although responding favorably, cancer patients are in danger of opportunistic infections that can invade their systems because unfortunately the therapy designed to kill the pathogenic cells also kills their protective immune cells. Cancer Research UK confirm that the active compounds in Reishi cause a marked increase in the action of macrophages, thus there is a heightened response to foreign cells, whether bacteria, viruses or tumor cells. The study points out, ‘It was evident from clinical trials that Reishi extract significantly enhanced the immune systems of the elderly people taking it'. Fungi affect humans so profoundly and are such good sources of medicinally useful products because on a cellular level fungi and animals have more in common with each other than they have with higher plants. The potent ability of medicinal mushroom bioactive compounds to modulate so many important immune cells may be due to their structural diversity and variability. Polysaccharides from medicinal mushrooms have the greatest potential for structural variability and the highest capacity for carrying biological information, e.g. the number of possible permutations for four different polysaccharides is 35,560 unique tetrasaccharides, whereas four amino acids can only form 24 different permutations. Reishi has been rated the top medicinal herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for over 2000 years with Ginseng in second place and so highly treasured it was traded for its own weight in gold and only available to Emperors. It is still the most important herb in the Orient and the most thoroughly researched. The results of many hundreds of scientific and medical studies are supporting traditional health claims. It contains over 200 active ingredients and unique compounds that are the most biologically active obtainable from any plant source. In order to obtain maximum benefit Reishi is best taken as an extract because it is a very tough, woody mushroom and the raw biomass is very difficult to digest. Its dynamic antioxidant action and immune stimulating effects are why Reishi is so highly valued as a longevity herb and called ‘The Long Life Herb', ‘The Great Protector' and even ‘God's Herb'. Cordyceps is not as well researched as Reishi but Cancer Research UK suggests that, ‘Cordyceps may be useful for cancer patients due to its enhancement of cell-mediated immunity, oxygen free radical scavenging and support for cellular bioenergy systems'. Medicinal mushrooms have latent cancer preventative properties. Studies in Japan and Brazil strongly suggest that regular consumption over prolonged periods significantly reduce the levels of cancer incidence. Cancer Research UK also found increasing experimental evidence that medicinal mushrooms can have a cancer preventative effect, demonstrating both high anti-tumor activity and restriction of tumor metastasis. A 14-year survey in Japan revealed cancer rates of workers at medicinal mushroom farms were 1 in 1000 compared to 1 in 600 for the general population.
  4. Hi Ma`s Kid & Kaffie Thank you for your replies this is a real good support site and i am so glas i found it. reading some of the stories on here make me feel so positive, the strengh and will of the members is amazing i wish them all the best for their future treatments and i will be following progress of all members. do you have a section on here where i can find out the Acronyns. How do i upload a photo as a avatar. 5. Hi Randy Thanks i have found out how to do that i am now having rouble trying to upload my avatar Do i need to contact a moderator? Jim ps im off to bed now its 12.35am and im tired so good night from me or it may be good morning to you? jim
  6. Hi randyw thanks for your pm. i do not class myself as a pioneer i only want to do what i think is right i am so tired of reading different forums on the b-17 for and against. My philosophy is i need to do it whatever the outcome,!!Then post my finding on these boards this will at least allow me to stop any nefarious characters trying to make money out of peoples suffering. If it works then (WoW) but i must stress that everyones body chemical is different and we all respond to medicines in different ways so what may or may not work for me may have an adverse effect on others. So it must be a individual decision based on the outcome of my trial. By the way how do i post my stats on the site? thx jim
  7. Hi karenl That certainly made very interestig reading so there we go pro and a non-pro view on vitamin b-17.You are so right people do dismiss alternative methods if it is not medical? Anyway since my last post i ahve spoken to a guy that was in the hospital at the same time as me having the same op. He actually mentioned this Vitamin B-17 saying his friend had throat cancer he was giving 6 months to live but 15 months later he is back to work and the cancer seems to under control!! On that i am going to give it a try i will become a guinea pig for B-17 and i will tell it as it is , i am having chemo so i will include the B-17 as i do believe you have to have the medical treatment also so as from when i start taking the nut kernels i will keep everyone posted as to the results (Good or Bad) This will enable everyone to have a first hand opinion on the B-17 Regards jim
  8. yes maryann karenl is right it is a operating theatre what do they call it in the usa. well had my first chemo today went better than i thought but it is early days yet, but i am smiling and focused on the future. Had a little better news today the small nodules in my left lung they now say that they cannot confirm it is lc or not. same as my lymph nodes. They have said that the tumours they can see in my mediastinum they cannot confirm yet if they are cancerous. i will however have a further Ct scan after my 3rd chemo treatment and if the spots in my left lung do not change then it is scarring, the tumours in the mediastinum i am not sure how they will determine those, and finally and more importantly the tumour on my right lung starts to shrink that will be the best news, i am going to sit on the fence with this so i can see both sides of the outcome. it is no good hiding away from what i may not what to hear BUT that is me!! well bye for now and once again thank you for your replies jim
  9. Once again let me thank you for your replies, that australian article makes interesting reading Karhart i have looked into the mushrooms and found this article are these the ones you are on about as it certainly makes an interesting read.? Especially as it has a modern day facts. thanks jim Ganoderma Lucidum: How A Mushroom Heralds An Important Breakthrough In The Fight Against Cancer The Chinese mushroom Ling Zhi (Ganoderma lucidum) has long been held in high esteem in China as a potent natural remedy which is also thought to be capable of bestowing longevity. In fact, ancient Chinese holy men believed that whoever consumed the mushroom regularly would become immortal, which is why they coined it "the mushroom of immortality". Now, while this mushroom certainly won't make you live forever, scientists have been investigating the medicinal properties of Ganoderma and have been astounded by the results yielded so far. They've been particularly impressed by the powerful anti-cancer action Ganoderma appears to possess. Numerous studies, including one carried out at the Department of Medical Biochemistry, Ehime University in Japan, have revealed that it can help prevent the spread of cancer, especially of the prostate, breast, liver and spleen.1 Ganoderma encourages the death of cancerous cells According to Japanese researchers, Ganoderma contains natural chemicals called triterpenoids, which possess an important anti-cancer action. They are able to inhibit the blood supply to cancerous cells - preventing oxygen and other nutrients from feeding them.1 On the other side of the Pacific, US scientists working at the Cancer Research Laboratory, Methodist Research Institute in Indianapolis, have shown that Ganoderma is able to block several chemicals, including AP-1, NF-kappaB and uPA, which promote the spread and development of cancerous cells.2 According to Dr Sliva who led the study, "Our data suggest that the spores and the body of Ganoderma lucidum inhibit the spread of breast and prostate cancer cells by a common mechanism, and would have a potential therapeutic use for the treatment of cancer". Protects DNA and possesses potent anti-inflammatory properties Scientists have theorised that another possible way in which Ganoderma may prevent cells from turning cancerous is by protecting vital DNA tissue. When DNA becomes damaged by free radicals, toxins or ultraviolet radiation, the risk of cancer is known to increase. Korean scientists from the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute tested Ganoderma on cancerous cells and then examined the DNA. They found that Ganoderma protects DNA from damage caused by free radicals and by radiation. They concluded that the mushroom merits further investigation as a potential preventative agent against cancer.3 Natural plant chemicals called phenolic compounds, which are known to be extremely effective in fighting free radicals, are also thought to play an important role in fighting cancer. Chinese researchers from the National Chunh-Hsing University, in Taiwan, have found that Ganoderma contains high concentrations of these beneficial phenolic compounds.4 Finally, Ganoderma appears to inhibit an inflammatory chemical called Tumour Necrosis Factor (TNF). This chemical is strongly implicated in heart disease, diabetes, dementia and cancer. Ganoderma is able to keep TNF under control, which may reduce the risk of these chronic conditions developing.5 Prostate cancer appears to respond particularly well to Ganoderma A team of scientists from the Department of Urology, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York, reported on the remarkable case of a patient with prostate cancer. This patient received treatment with Ganoderma and genistein every day for six weeks, before he was due to have surgery to remove his prostate. You may remember that HSI brought you a report, in your February 2002 edition, on the benefits of genistein - a plant chemical present in soya that has been found to help prevent prostate cancer. This combined treatment approach produced a significant effect on his Prostatic Specific Antigen (PSA) levels. A PSA blood test is commonly performed to evaluate prostate problems, as patients with prostate cancer typically have high PSA levels. After the six-week treatment programme, doctors were amazed to discover that the patient's PSA reading had fallen from an initial 19.7 ng/mL to a mere 4.2 mg/mL. When the patient went to have his surgery performed, the surgeons found that there was no sign of cancer in his prostate tissue.6 This is far from being an isolated case. For daily reports on the very latest health breakthroughs, join our FREE daily email service: Two years earlier, doctors working at the Squier Urological Clinic, Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Centre in New York, reported the recovery of two patients with prostate cancer who were treated with Ganoderma. Both men had been offered conventional treatment for their prostate cancer but decided to opt for a natural treatment approach instead. In this instance, they received Ganoderma together with other herbs like saw palmetto, which has also been found to be effective against prostate cancer. Again both patients' PSA readings were found to have dropped significantly. No side effects were reported in either case.7 What to take for best results The recommended dosage for maintaining overall health is 0.5g to 1g of Ganoderma a day. For those at high risk of cancer (such as those with a family history of the disease) a dosage of 2-5g of Ganoderma is suggested as a preventive measure. No adverse side effects have been reported following the use of Ganoderma. 1.Kimura Y, Taniguchi M, Baba K. Anticancer Res 2002;22(6A):3309-3318 2. Sliva D, Labarrere C, Slivova V, Sedlak M. 10. Hi cynical_angel thank you for that it makes interesting reading, But it also dismisses most other herbal remedies along with B-17.So it contradicts other sites i have read but it makes very interesting reading. I do beleive that it is going to be an individual decision to take it or not but i think at this stage i will leave it alone until i find any positive evidence thanks you jim
  11. Thanks for your replies like you i know nothing except what i have read.So here is hoping that we may here something positive.I know a study was done a long time ago but nothing for the modern day.As far as the cyanide goes apperently you cannot extract it from the nut. The nut releases it but it is controlled by another drug within the nut? I have read some hospitals actuallu use it in germany and mexico but i have not found out which yet but i will keep loking I certainly do not want to hear from anyone who is trying to sell it unless they have a modern day assessment of this, I know they are in nut form so that is not to bad as i like nuts anyway, anyway here is hoping i will have a look at the mushrooms also thanks jim
  12. Hi I have initially posted as a newbie on here and i assume like many others who are going through lc we look at other options. My wife has found something about apricot seeds vitamin b-17.There seems to a lot in favour of it! BUT this all comes from people in the 1970`s i cannot find anything that gives a representation of 2006. Does anyone have any information regarding vitamin b-17 or is this just another ploy by people trying to get money from people who live on hope.I have been told they are numerous things out there promising this and that as a cure or as a assistance to cancer but i am not taking in that easy.Anyone who has used b-17 or heard anything about it negative or positive your replies would be most welcome thanks jim
  13. HI I would like to thank you for your kind and very reassuring replies,We have asked for copies of all letters , scans reports, biopsy`s etc. I start my chemotherapy tomorrow so looking forward to getting on with it and hopefully getting this awful thing under control. The plot thickens a little,When i went for my mediastinoscopy there was also another patient who had been diagnosed with lung cancer mass ( right lung) we got on talking they told him he was to go to he hospital next morning at 6.45am as he was in theatre first. i was told to go at 7.15am to be prepped for theatre Second patient. As it turns out they took me down first, and dave second? He was to have a mediastinoscopy and a bronchoscopy.! I have told you my results. After many telephone calls to have his results he was told his no cancer in his lymph and left lung, whereas we had my results faxed through to my local hospital and we were told that i had nodules in my left lung, the lymph they tesed clear but tumors in my chest??All this from a Cat scan??So Confusing!! I will of course keep you all informed of the progress and i send my kind regards to you all and hope all of your treatments go well and wish you all a speedy recovery regards jim
  14. My name is jim i live in the u.k after having chest pains mostly after i drank alcohol i went to the doctors who referred me to my local hopsital in march of this year. After a chest x-ray which showed a shadow on my right lung i was sent for a Ct scan ( which showed a growth in the right lung and a (spot)in the left lung ) which they said could be due to scarring)The consultant who did not mention cancer said at my appointment its not looking good to which my wife asked could this be benign to which she relied no!!My wife then asked would the CT scan show any other areas that were affected she said yes. i told i had NSCC ardenocarcinoma of the right lung, the tumor being 3.5cm and attched to the thorax. The suggested treatment plan chemotherapy and possible radiotherapy as it is (localised) I even suggested Cryotherapy( Freeze therapy) we contacted a Hospital in middlesex who said i was an ideal candidate and there was no waiting list. ( joy) we had mentiond this to the consultant who said all we needed was a referral from my local hospital which was not a problem, BUt i needed to go down Mainstream treatment first as there was a remote chance that the chemotherapy would shrink the tumor and hopefully pull itself away from the thorax making surgery possible(This conversation took place early April)after the CT scan.( Operation not an option if secondary cancer detected) She then sent me for a Bronchoscopy of the right lung, results sweep of the right lung (clear) and thorax (clear) She informed that were was one part which they could not get to with the Bronchcosopy she then told me i would need to go for mediastinoscopy results (Stage 4L cancer of the right lung , lymph node clear( the one they biopsied). I then returned to the hospital for a further consultation to which they then delivered the hammer blow to which they informed me that i had multiple nodules in the left lung and tumors in the centre of my chest (in the glands they had not carried out a Biopsy on) So all this is based on a CT scan which had been carried out 4 weeks prior to the bronchoscopy and mediastinoscopy My problem is how could i have had a Ct scan, bronchoscopy, mediastinoscopy then have a completley different diagnosis one week to the next it seems as though they are discussing a different patient. they are now basing this diagnosis on the Ct scan? Surely the tumours would have shown i know i have cancer but i think there is a blunder somewhere. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated thanks jim
