Kay Bowen Died July 8, 2006 Blacksburg, S.C. — Mrs. Kay Bowen, 65, of 134 Waterson Road, died Saturday, July 8, 2006, at Hospice at Wendover. Mrs. Bowen was born in Cleveland County, daughter of the late Hood Watterson. She was a homemaker and active member of First Baptist Church in Grover, serving as a choir member and former Sunday school teacher. She was also preceded in death by her nephew, Alan Watterson. In addition to her husband, Jerry L. Bowen of Blacksburg, she is survived by her sons, Fred Bowen and wife Tina of Blacksburg and Michael Bowen and special friend Kristin Baehr of Gaffney, S.C.; her mother, Pauline Norman Watterson of Blacksburg; brothers, Bob Watterson and wife Ruth of Akron, Ohio, and Richard Watterson and wife Betty of Shelby; grandchildren, Nicholas and Jonathon Bowen; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members. My MIL(Kay) passed away Saturday at 4am. They moved her to the Hospice House Thursday and she was very comfortable there.My FIL was with her while she passed but he had his back turned on the phone with her younger Brother so he didn't see her go. Friday we took our two boys to see her and she smiled, I know in my heart that she wanted on last kiss from Nicholas(our soon to be 2 year old). My FIL is doing better than I thought he would.DH and BIL are doing quiet well. Thanks everyone for the support and prayers.

I was really shocked that hospice comes to the Hospital.They are really working hard to make sure kay is comfortable, she can now hav eMoraphine every hour if needed. They said it could be 3 days to 3 wks, so FIL is wanting to take her to the Hospice home. I know he would love to have her home but he knows I couldn't handle 2 kids(under2) him and DH if something happened. I am greatfull for the 2 years that she has faught this and for her seeing her first two grandchildren

Thank you all for the prayers..her Blood Preasure at the moment is 88 that's it no bottom number, they are having to use a doppler to find a pulse to read her BP.She had a episode that lasted for almost 4 hours today.The did an Echocardiogram and her Ejection Fraction is 25%. Her lungs are FULL and you can her the crackles in the lungs just by standing near her.She is on Morophine and Ativan.Her heart rate is still very high her oxygen is on 15 Wide Open and if she has another spell they don't know what they can do. She has her room at 55 degrees and a fan on her because she is so hot. Her Kidneys are shutting down her output for 12 hours were only 150. We are tired.I am greatful I have had someone to look after the babies for the last two nights but my MIL wants to see them so we are going to take them up in the morning for a short visit.I really don't think my 2 year old can handle to see his grandmother like this.

We just got back from the Hospital(please excuse the spelling Errors) she has Pnumonia(sp), her heart is going out of Rhythem(sp) and her White count is over 26,000, Hemoglobin 7.5, and her Heart Emzemes shows that she is having Light Heart Attacks. The Dr came in while we were all in the Room and asked her about a DNR which she said she didn't want anything done to restart her heart or any other Life Saving Measures. he said that if she does get to come home it's Time for Hospice(Her Oncologist was going to Refer her Friday)..She had a event while we were there where her Heart rate went in the 200's and it really got to my FIL. My FIL said he would rather see her go by a Heart Attack than suffer from the Pain of Cancer.They are between a roack and hard place as far as meds to keep her heart rate down because her Blood Preasure is Low.They did say that she has fluid around her lung and that if they draw some off that maybe she would be able to breathe a little better. She told me today that I am now the Woman of the family and it's my job to take care of her Boys.

FIL took my MIL(kay) to have blood work and when he got her hom she called for me because she was having trouble breathing. I told her that I thought she needed to go to the Hospital because her pulse was 125 and that she was still very swollen. The medics gave her Oxygen and her pulse was 137 and pulse Ox was 93 with Oxygen. I do believe from personal experience that she is going into heart failure her Pulse was fast but weak. I am just really upset right now. prayers please.

i am sorry he is in Pain but going through with the treatments that took a lot of Courage.

Thanks for the good thoughts and prayers.. Hospice hasn't been called yet so i am not giving up hope that we may have 6 months left(I know deep down that not going to be the case) She is having a harder time walking with pain in the Hip and leg. Her Hemoglobin is up to 11.6 that was wonderful news, but her Potasium is still very low and she has gained 8 pounds in a week.I am thinking she might be starting to go into heart failure and I am going to call the Dr before her appointment Monday to see if he can run a BNP(it can tell if you are in heart failure or going into it). She has agreed to take Potasium and a Diuretic but nothing to treat the cancer or pain .I think the only reason she is willing to take something for that is because she knew who much I had a hard time when I went into heart failure after my oldest son was born. We are getting Calories in about 600-800 a day.

My MIL(Kay) has decided that she is not going to try anything else(right now she is to weak to do anything). She is so weak, easily agitated, hardly can walk and is sleeping a lot now. She goes to the Dr for blood work thursday.

I am so sorry about Kieth he is very lucky to have you and you him. Please take care of you and I am sending lots of STICKY vibes for the baby/babies.

tHE oNC CALLED HER AND TOLD HER IT HAS SPREAD BACK TO HER LEFT LUNG NOW IN THE LOWER lOBE(THEY TOOK OUT THE UPPER LOBE) She may get to come home Friday but the Onc agreed that she couldn't handle any more Chemo. I don't know if he is going to call Hospice in at this point or wait until she gets a PET scan instead of the CT scan. I don't know if this is related to the Tarceva her Lupus or her cancer but her eyesight is worse, everything is blurry.

Well her PET scan was postponed by her PCP and her ONC they did do a CT scan.I think one reason it was postponed was she is still in the hospital in one city and the PET scan is 40 miles away.I don't really know exactly why. They did the scope down her throat this morning hoping for good results. Her Hemoglobin is dropping again it was 8.6 today and if it goes below 8 more Blood. I am hoping the one month she was onTarceva helped.

I am so sorry about you mom, it's so hard to see someone you love like this. you do need to take care of you also. hugs and Prayers for you and her.

Kay(mother-in-law) is still in the hospital. They gave her 2 until of Blood Saturday her hemoglobin went up to 10.7 now it has dropped back down to 9.7(yesterdays numbers), so the blood helped for one day. She has an infection they started Vanomyicin(sp) fior two days stopped it, her fever went back up and her white count. She had a chest X-Ray that said she had neoplastic(sp) in her lower right lung(the same lung that this started in).She started solids Sunday then yesterday she ended up "sick" again so they put her back on Soft food and done a Upper GI today.The way she is swallowing it's not going in right so they are calling the Gastric Dr. I talked to her Onc. yesterday and he said that if the Pet scan shows it has spread then it's time to call in Hospice

Her fever started after the Transfusion ended. Today they started her on Antibotics and the Dr did tell her he was looking for an infection. I do remember the Culture things with my mom but it had just been so long ago that I forgot that the results take a few days. You guys are wonderful and that helped a lot .

MIL had two units of blood today and tonight she had a fever so they done chest X rays and Blood test. FIL called and they told him that they were checking for something in her blood and that they wouldn't ahve the results for 3 days. Has this happened to anyone? I can't call and ask the nurse and DH is pretty much in denial about things.I was thinking that since they were pushing fluids that amybe it was Heart Failure.

She is in the hospital her Potasium is VERY LOW and they are doing a blood transfusion. They told she might get to come home Sunday but that is not certain. She told me yesterday she can't fight it any longer. I have gotten my Husband,FIL and BIL prepared that Hospice may be called in at some point in the future.

I finally had to call the Dr for MIL. She is off of Terceva and the Onc. wants her to go get IV fluids, he said she is dehydrated. Her HR is up and is having tingling in the hands and feet. Tina

She is on Lexapro for depression and has been since 2004. Today was better she was able to eat some jello not much but better than nothing, she is going to call her Dr first thing in the morning if not FIL is. We might try Pedisure since she can't stand Ensure.. Thanks for the support.

I had a talking to with her and told her plain out that if she did not feel better by Monday she had better call the Dr or someone else would. She did agree to call Monday. All she has ate today is 4 crackers and a Cup of Jello. I went as far as reminding her how my mom starved to death(she had a blood infection made worse from not eating and died of Septis) she is remnding me of my mom. She thinks she is super woman. My FIL did not know about the Insurance needing Prior Auth. for the Zelform and if she does not call he will.

My MIL went to see her Oncologist yesterday but didn't tell him that she is having a hard time breathing(she can't talk without getting out of breath), not being able to eat or that she's in pain. My FIL went with her and he tried to tell the Dr but MIL kept telling him to HUSH. She had to have a Procrit shot, Her red count was close to being to low. I am doing everything I can for her but she will NOT let me go to the store for her, but she really doesn't need to go alone. She stays in her bed 90% of the time when she's not in the bathroom SICK. She has a PET scan on the 24th to see if the Traceva is working.I do plan on talking to my FIL about getting her to let me go to the store for her and see if he can call the Dr about the way she's feeling. I knew I could come here for support and will try to post more often. I can see she is starting to give up because she is so scared of going to the hospital that she isn't telling the Dr how bad she feels or how little she's eating. She could only get a half a cup of Cereal down yesterday. Tina
