    post op

Yes, my official post op Dx. is Stage 4 Localized Mesothelioma so it is amazing that within 6 months of Dx. I was cancer free. I still hate this bump though. I am on a quest to find out what it is and how to fix it. It gives me something to focus on while I do this round of chemo. Research "post-op organ shifting". However,I am very grateful that I am still on the right side of the grass, bump and all. Thanks, Lee.

Thanks for the reply Don. My surgeon actually did mention putting in some kind of a plastic rib cage at some point, he told me that we would address the "issue" at my Sept. 5th appt. I am 45 Yrs. old and to date have had 17 surgeries so the thought of having another surgery is not sitting well w/ me. Maybe I will go really retro and start wearing a corset(? spelling) to keep everything in it's proper place! Thanks again, Lee.

Hi Connie, Thank you very much for your reply. It is REALLY good to know that it takes up to 6 months for the swelling to go down, it gives me hope that my "bump" could also be due to post op swelling as well as organ "displacement". I have not really persuded the issue w/ my surgeon because I have started post op chemo, my surgeon told me to get through the chemo and then we would address the "bump". I have not been able to find any literature on organ "displacement" after rib removal so it has been driving me nuts!!The only info I have found on rib removal is were people actually have ribs removed to get an hour glass figure!, well the opposite happened to me!! My tumor was pushing up against my diaphragm and ribs so my surgeon took part of my diaphragm (and moved the rest of it) and took 6 ribs "just in case" the tumor had spread into them. I don't know, it sounds wierd to me, but that's what he said. My surgery took 8 hours so he had alot of time to remove things and move things around! Thanks again for the info, Lee.

Four months ago I had surgery to remove a pluera tumor, my pleura, right upper lobe, part of my diaphram, and several ribs. I now have a "bump" on my right side where my liver or ascending colon have moved over and are pushing out because my ribs are no longer there to kinda keep everything in place!! My surgeon told me not to worry about it, that we will address the problem at my Sept. 5th visit. It is sooo uncomfortable. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem post- op or if anyone still had alot of swelling 4 months post-op (I am hoping that some of the "bump" is due to swelling). Thank you, Lee.
  5. Hi Eileen, The Radiologist reading the scan could tenatively tell what the mass is by the shape of it's borders and the density of the mass on the scan. Cancerous masses look differant than benign masses on scans. But there definately are exceptions so it is great that you are having it removed so that the pathologists can study it and give you a definative diagnosis. I had a mass on my pleural cavity removed along w/ my upper right lobe and a bunch of ribs 10 weeks ago and am now cancer free. I am getting chemo at the moment as "insurance". When the surgeon had initially biopsied my tumor it did not show any cancer cells because the cells he had taken out to be tested had alot of dead cells in it which is hard to read but it 'looked' cancerous so I had it removed and tested. The mass was cancerous so obviously I am glad it was removed. I will be thinking of you and praying for you on the 10th. Please keep us updated w/ your progress!! Lee. (my name is Eileen also, Lee is my nickname).

Wow Welthy- 20 rounds of chemo!? I read your husband's profile, you both have been through the mill w/ this disease. It is amazing to me just how far lung cancer can go before people become symptomatic! I actually have never had alot of the symptoms associated w/ meso. No pleura thickening, SOB, or pain, (other than the surgical pain which is gone now). That is probably why I was originally misdiagnosed like Antionette and many other people. I probably got my dose of asbestos at school also. Lee
  7. Thank you to everyone who replied to my first post!. Your stories were very interesting to read. When I was diagnosed in Nov. 2005 I made a little schedule up in my head as to how long this recovery process will be: chemo, then surgery, then more chemo, then done by August 2006-just in time for summer vacation w/ my daughters and husband. No muss, no fuss. Yeh well that is not working out as planned. Antionette: Your DX. of Mesothelioma obviously caught my attention. I hope you are feeling well today!! Do you know where you were exposed to asbestos? I have no idea where I had any exposure other than the usual places mass amounts of people might be exposed like at school or other public buildings. One of my surgeons told me that it can only take a few inhaled fibers to start the disease process. You said you had a tumor, what size is/was it? I was dx. after I had a lower resp. infection that would not go away after a few weeks and so I had a chest CT scan that showed a 4x2cm. mass on my diaphram/liver area. do you have pleural thickening? and where is the source of your pain? Thank you, Lee
  8. Hi, my name is Lee. I am a 45 year old woman from New Haven, CT. I was dx. w/ adenocarcinoma last Nov., I had a large tumor on my right diaphram and a couple of small nodules on my right pluera. I had 3 rounds of cisplat/Gemzar which took out the nodules and brought the tumor down to a sliver. 8 weeks ago I had surgery to remove the tumor, my right upper lobe, pleura, and a half a dozen ribs. After surgery my surgeon changed my dx. to mesothelioma and I am now getting 4 more rounds of chemo. This has been one strange ride. The first round of chemo made me VERY sick but obviously worked really well (plus I did not lose my hair)so I should not be complaining that I have to do 4 more rounds but I am sooo tired from surgery, this is really going to wipe me out. I have not talked to anyone else w/ lung cancer and would love to hear from survivors to give me alittle boost as I start this next round of treatment. Plus I would like to know if anyone who had surgery found their liver pushing out the side of their stomach!! My surgeon told me that since I no longer have ribs to hold my liver in place it has migrated to my sbdominal wall!!! It's very attractive. Thanks, Lee.

I had surgery at Yale 8 weeks ago and am now supposively cancer free. I am doing 4 more rounds of chemo now for "insurance". I pretty much have been living every day in fear and have definately felt depression sinking in. I really feel for you and know what you are going through!!! Let me know if you would like to talk and I will send you my email address and phone number. Lee.
