  1. Hi everyone. I haven't been on here for a while, I have had my hands full with mom. I need to update my profile and plan to do so tonight but I am in a hurry to get over my moms house. For now, I'll just give you a quick update. She just finished her 3rd round of chemo with cisplatinum and etoposide. She also started radiation and has 7 bouts so far. She goes for radiation every day during the week. My questions are: Fatigue-How bad is it? Is fatigue bothersome or unbareable? My mom literally does nothing for herself right now. If she needs something to eat or drink she'll get me to do it. She says she is too weak and gets lightheaded. She'll walk to the car from the house when I take her for treatments every day. When we get to the cancer center, I have to get her a wheel chair because she says she can't walk. Question number 2-She acts different. Most of the time she talks like a baby. If I ask her a question, she'll say I sink so, instead of I think so. She'll also repeat herself. She'll say something like, I don't like cold weather, no I don't like cold weather. Depression/Anxiety-She crys about everything. She accidently knocked over a small cup of water at the cancer center and started crying. On Monday, she said she felt like she was having a panic attack. I mentioned this to her nurse at the cancer center and she said mom should ask her Doctor for Ativan. I don't know if she needs that or a depression medicine. Is this normal? I have a lot more to post but I really do need to run. I'll try to post more tonight. Thanks everyone!
  2. Thank you all for the warm welcome. I definitey will check in daily, I want to learn so much. I am not sure why mom does not get cisplatin every day, I'll have to check with her DR. My mom has gotten through the first round of chemo. Monday was 6.5 hours and Tuesday & Wednesday 3 hours each. She had 1 complication, major swelling in the face, stomach, hands and feet. She felt so bloated and miserable yesterday. I called the DR and she prescibed a strong water pill to help with the swelling but wants mom to have blood work drawn today. She said mom's tumor was very large and that it's possible with all the chemo treatment due to the swelling that mom is not getting enough blood to the heart valve. I spoke with mom this morning and she said she feels SO MUCH better today. She has been peeing a lot and the swelling has really went down. The DR was kind of hestitant to give mom the water pill because she does not want mom to get dehydrated and also it's not good for the kidneys especially after just having chemo. She can only take the pill every other day as needed. She will get a shot of neupogen everyday for 7 days. (This medication stimulates the blood system (bone marrow) to make white blood cells, helping to fight infections.)
  3. Hello,I am new here. I stumbled upon this site as I desperately try to find out all I can about lung cancer. Here's my story... My mom used to smoke but quit almost 3 yrs ago. She went to the for a regular check up in May. She was given a lab order for blood work. She was currently taking Synthroid for her thyroid and benicar for high blood pressure. She had the blood work drawn in June and everything came back good. It was about 2 weeks later, she started to become hoarse and her throat hurt. She went to the Dr and was told she had a yeast infection in her mouth due to Advair inhaler. (Her Dr gave her this inhaler about a year ago for shortness of breath) My mom was given medicine to swish around in her mouth to treat the infection, 2 weeks later no change. The Dr then gave her an antibotic in the form of a pill to try. She finished that and 2 days later we left for vacation. After we returned she was still not feeling well. She was hoarse, coughed a lot, and had pain in her back shoulder area. Then the following happened. 8/17/06-Dr sent her for xrays and bloodwork. 8/18/06-Dr called her back in to office. She was diagnosed with lung cancer. 8/22/06-PET Scan 8/30/06-Consult with Pulmonary Dr. 8/31/06-Biopsy 9/5/06-Dr said it's Small Cell, Limited Stage Lung Cancer and referred her to an Oncologist. 9/6/06-Consult with Oncologist 9/11/06-Chemo with Cisplatin & Etoposide 9/12/06-Chemo with Etoposide and then tomorrow it's Chemo with Etoposide. She will have Chemo every 21 days. Does anyone know if Small Cell Lung Cancer curable? She does not go back to the Dr til 9/29/06.
