  1. My mom is 63 and was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in June. It spread up her collarbone and into her abdomen. She had 5 or 6 rounds of chemo (unsure of medicines used) which she took 3 days in a row every 21 days. At first it seemed to work because the tumor on her collarbone shrank to practically nothing. Now after another scan we have found that the tumor is no longer shrinking so they have changed her chemo to once a week with stronger medicine being used. It has been difficult because I live in Arkansas and she lives in Michigan. I went to visit for a month and had a very difficult time leaving because she is my best friend and I would love to help her but I don't know how. I would love if someone could give me an idea of what to expect because I am just totally lost.
  2. Thanks for your reply. I understand what you are going through. My mom finished her first round of chemo (which lasted 4 days) about two weeks ago and goes back for more the first part of September. Last week she was admitted into the hospital because the chemo made her sodium level drop which made her have a headache and dizziness. The doctor said this was normal for people after having chemo for the first time and that this shouldn't happen again. She was in the hospital for 3 days so they could slowly raise her sodium. She was discharged and now she complains of being tired all the time. She also has sores in her mouth and cannot taste much. I hope everything goes well for your family and I would love talking to you again. Talking to others going through the same thing helps tremendously.
  3. My mother found out she had cancer about 4 to 6 weeks ago. It started in her lung, spread up to her collarbone and down into her abdomen. The doctor said it was small cell and was fast growing (unsure of exactly what kind of cancer.) She has had 3 chemo treatments so far. Her sodium level was too low so she was admitted into the hospital yesterday after complaining of headache and light headedness. My sisters and I are worrying ourselves sick over this because my mother is in denial and won't ask the questions that we need answers to. We just want to know what we can expect from this and how we can try to help our mother. Thanks for listening.
  4. I just found out that besides the cancer spreading to the collarbone it has also spread to her abdomen. The doctor said it was extensive. I just hope everything will be okay
  5. I was on here awhile ago after finding out my mom has lung cancer. At that time I didn't know much about her condition. Getting information out of her has been difficult because she knows what a rough time I am having with this, especially because I am her "baby" and I live in Arkansas and she lives in Michigan. Luckily I have two older sisters who live there also plus my stepdad. My mom has a very large tumor on her right lung and has spread and is attached to her collarbone. She had her first three chemo treatments last week. The first time it lasted almost 8 hours. Is this normal? Two days ago she started complaining of having a headache and feeling sick. Yesterday when she visited the doctor she began feeling very light headed. The doctor admitted her into the hospital because she said her sodium was low. She was admitted into the ICU. Why would they do this and is this the norm? My sister said that my mom seemed confused almost as if she didn't recognize my sisters. I am very scared and upset. I would appreciate any help or advice about this disease as possible. All I know is that it is a large tumor in the lung and up to the collarbone, it is small cell cancer and that she has just had 3 chemo treatments and will go for more the first of September. Thank you for listening to me
  6. My mom is getting a biopsy on Monday but her doctors have already told her it was cancer. I thought the biopsy was to see if it was cancerous or not. They said it is on her right lung but after the biopsy they are going to take more x-rays-I'm guessing to see if it has spread beyond her lung.
  7. My name is Michele and I just found out yesterday that my mother has a tumor on her right lung. She is going for a biopsy on Monday. What exactly do they do a biopsy for? I thought it was to see if it was malignant but the doctors have already told her it's cancer(she has been to 3 doctors). I have already posted on here in another section and everyone has been so helpful and kind. I am so glad I found this site because I feel like it is going to be so much help for me.
  8. I just want to say thank you so much for all of the support everyone has given me. It is so appreciated. I am glad I found this site because it is exactly what I needed. I am sure I will have many more questions to ask and I appreciate everyone helping me through this.
  9. This is my first time to this board. I am 28 years old and my 63 year old mother just told me she has a tumor by her lung. To say the least I am devastated because she is my best friend and sometimes my only friend. What makes it even harder is the fact that she is in Michigan and I am in Arkansas. The reason I have come to this board is to ask some questions that I have and I figured this was the best place to look. My mother is having a biopsy done on Monday. I want to go to Michigan now but she told me to wait because she will need the help more once she starts chemo. What I want to know is how long after the biopsy will they start the chemo treatments if she needs them? I have many more questions but my mind is rattled right now. I would appreciate any help and advice that you could give me. I would truly appreciate it.
