  1. Am in need of some suggestions for nutritional diets. I have spoken with some dietitions and they have given me some tips and some reciepies. Just prior to the start (approx 3 weeks) I went to the dentist with what I was fully aware of a lot of bad dental problems. From the exams, x-rays and recommendations of 2 dentists who told me I should highly consider having dentures made. I opted for this and went to an Oral Surgeon to have all of my remaining teeth extracted. I was then fitted with Temporary Dentures which I had some problems with due to the surgery and resultant small bone spurs protruding through the gums. Then this lung cancer came into the picture and the weight loss shrank the gums further and the sores do not allow the wearing of the Temporary Dentures and until there is some results from treatment and the sores are taken care of the dentist says it is a waste of time and money to have the permanent dentures made. In the meantime I am trying to exist on Milk Shakes fortified with Protien, soups, soft type foods and gumming what I can and still losing weight (which is not concerning the ONC at this point) I certainly would like to have some weight type gaining foods that maybe I can find palatable due to the bad taste of food, any suggestions (I am aware you are not dietitions, but what have you experienced?) Please no Ensure. It makes me deathly ill Thanks Dick
  2. I have a very sore throat from Radiation treatments, which the radiation lab warned me about. The gave me a perscription for a product that on the label says "Anti-Cand". I was not given instructions from the VA as to how exactly to use this and I tried to "Google: Anti-Cand with no results. Has anyone heard of this and/or utilized this and can give me some idea as to how to use it? Thanks Dick
  3. I do a a TREMENDOUS AMOUNT of waterfowl hunting (starting my 57th season) and after my final visit with the Torasic Surgeon prior to starting treatments, I just candidly aske him about shooting and explained how much all of the hunting (I hunt other upland and big game as well) that I do during the year along with recreational shooting. He said "Go right ahead and enjoy what you did prior to all of this as long as the side effects of treatment allow it." I am left handed and so all of the surgery and treatment procedures have been accomoplished on the right side so minimize any problems that may occor. I have shot a lot since then and so far not a problem. Dick
  4. I have started treatment and am having some real difficult problems Might just be the norm for those who have been through it, but not for me! Have had 4 Radiation sessions and 1 Chemo session so far. Radiation is scheduled daily (5 days per week) with Chemo once a week. So far the side effects have been from minimal to just about unbearable. I have been experiencing a lot of fatigue and pain in the back and neck. Some slight memory problems as well. I am not on any regimine of pain medications or any other Radiation or Chemo medications. Another issue that is plagueing me is the problem of smoking ceasation. I have been on patches and 150MG tablets of Bupropion 2 times a day with no luck. I am a long time smoker, smoking over 50 years of Camel regular cigarettes. My Pulmanary Dr. said he would like to see me on another pill, but the Director of the VA Medical Center will not allow him to perscribe it until a complete course of their stop smoking classes are completed. I am very willing to attend the classes, however they are in confliction with my treatment schedule and with the case loads of patients at the VA it is virtually impossible to re-schedule the treatments. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated! Dick
  5. I go to Radiation Thur AM for Targeting and then first round of Radiation Treatment on Mon. The ONC will start with their scheduling on Thur as Well as well as another CT Scan. I am real anxious (good anxious) for this to commence and at the same time wondering what the after effects (if any) will be. I will let you know what the outcome of all of this is sometime over the weekend Dick

The seemily desertion of friends and family since I have been diagnosed with CANCER! 3. Not knowing what is in the future and not really getting definative answers from doctors as to a finite pronossis. Dick
  7. for the welcome. My dianosis reads stage T4IB IIIB squamous cell CA Bronchoscopy, rt. VATS rt thoracotomy, bx rt mediastinal/ hilar tumor (what ever all of that means) to me it meant what I understood the doctors to say. Non-small cell lung cancer, the tumor started out at .60 centimeters and the latest ctscan showed it at 3.4 centimeters. They did major surgery to do a final biopsy and I was released from the hospital after surgery a week ago. Again, thank you for the welcome Dick
