Hi Kelly! I had stage 3A and had the bottom half of my right lung removed four years ago. I am doing fine and my cat scans have been normal. The first weeks after surgery were the hardest. I remember getting out of bed was rough at first. After five months I took a trip to Ireland. Had a little trouble walking uphill but otherwise, I enjoyed it. A year after surgery, you will be in great shape. You will feel better and better month after month. Best of luck to you! Sharon

Hello Jeffrey! I worked with your mother, Rose, and met her again when she was in the Nursing Home with my Aunt. I know how hard this is for you and went through the same thing. Had surgery nearly four years ago and am still feeling good. Don't give up hope as I told your mother I know of at least three people who have been living for fifteen years after lung surgery. Sending you a big hug and lots of prayers for a speedy recovery! The roughest thing I remember was trying to get up out of bed once I was home. You might want to spend some time in a reclining chair. I had to have someone stay with me about the first week after surgery. The fact that you can have the surgery is a very good thing. Wishing you a very successful surgery and hope you will be fine! That oxycotin is terrible for causing constipation. I remember it well as I took it after lung surgery and even with the recommended stool softener, it was awful. Wish they could give him something else for pain. Prayers for both of you. Sharon

Hi Amanda! I remember when my mother was first diagnosed with high blood pressure. She got a bad nose bleed that wouldn't quit and had to go to the emergency room to get it packed. I also had nosebleeds after lung surgery. It was caused by the percocet. I don't know if I took them too close together or what but I also have high blood pressure and was told to get off them as they increase your blood pressure. Don't know if your family member takes percocet for pain but it is one possibility. Prayers for you and your family! Sharon

Hello Frank! That was a nice poem you put on the site. I had half of the right lung removed Jan. 2004. I refused chemo and radiation as I wanted to feel as well as I could. Plus they said there was only a five percent chance chemo and radiation would help. I am feeling pretty well yet. Miraculously my cat scan last Jan. and chest xray in September were okay. They said I had stage 3A and found a bad lymph node in the mediastum when they did surgery. I sometimes wonder if the chemo and radiation doesn't just shrink tumors temporarily. You certainly were a lot braver than me to go through the treatments. Hope you are eating well and getting around okay. My cousin had chemo for breast cancer and now she has bad trouble with her eyes because of it. She is only about 58. Everyone has a twin and you look a lot like my friend's husband Terry. My surgeon said he refused to operate on patients who smoke as he had too much trouble with lung surgery patients who smoked getting pneumonia after lung surgery. He said you had to have quit at least two weeks prior to surgery. That was really hard considering the stress you are under after they tell you that they suspect lung cancer. This was a thoractic surgeon. Prayers for your mother! Sharon

Hello, I'm glad your pulmonary function is okay. I have no answers for you but I wish you all the best of luck. I had stage IIIA but I guess it is okay for the moment. Had lung surgery and that left me a lot shorter of breath doing steps and any exertion. Other than that I seem to be the same and the cat scan was okay last time. I am not on oxygen or anything like that, just inhalers and advair. A lot of people with stage Iv have been helped on this site. Best wishes! Sharon

Hoping your Mom will feel better with no treatments for a while. My Mother couldn't take it after a while. She had cancer of the gall bladder that spread to the liver. She was terribly ill from the chemo. Praying that your Mom will soon feel better. Sharon
