  1. Frank -

Your posts always bring a smile to my face (or sometimes at least a groan  ). Your attitude is AWESOME and so inspiring. You continue to be my hero. If the Fat Lady gets too close throw some beer bottles at her and then pelt her with the donuts until she runs away.

    (((((Frank & Connie)))))

    Much Love,

    Amy

  2. ((((Peggy)))))

You have so much going on but are still being a cheerleader. Your giving spirit never ceases to amaze me.

I am glad to hear that the lump was a cyst - phew! and glad to hear that that boy of yours is starting to come around. Will continue to pray that he get better, and soon!

As for the hubby, will be praying for good news and a plan to get rid of the pain. Glad to hear that he is taking leave, make him take you somewhere warm with half dressed  cabana boys waiting on you hand and foot, you so deserve to be pampered.

Much Love to you Peggy and her boys!!!

  3. Be as honest as your kids can handle...from my experience, they can handle a lot more than we think.

My daughters were only 5 1/2 and 4 when we told them that my their Nonna, to whom they were VERY close, was going to die (Ovarian Cancer). They knew she was very sick and she was literally deteriorating before our eyes. They avoided her and could barely be in the same room with her UNTIL we told them that she was very sick and we knew that she would be passing away soon. As soon as they knew, they started paying more attention and both of them without encouragement, spent time with her alone talking. My oldest still talks about what Nonna and her talked about during their last couple of visits.

That was one of the hardest things I have ever done, but it made the world of difference to my kids. I don't remember who said it, but it is true that they need to be given the chance to make some additional memories but also be given the chance to say good bye.

Wishing you peace, comfort and love during this difficult time.

    Much Love,

    Amy

  4. Addie -

My Mother-in-Law had the very same thing happen - she was taking taxotere for Ovarian Cancer - and her nails were beautiful and we could never figure out why. This is a very interesting observation.

Glad to hear the doc is making some adjustments so that you won't have another crash. Wishing you well!

    Much Love,

    Amy

  5. Peggy -

This is not what you will want to hear - Mom has a lymph node under arm that is malignant and you can feel it under the skin-the oncologist does a manual check of it on each visit.

I hope that hubby's is just an infection but if not, surely it can be easily zapped. Mom's has been stable with the Iressa and I don't believe she will ever persue anything stronger.

((((((Peggy)))))) and prayers - you have had your fair share of bumps lately - hope things get better soon!

    Thinking of you and yours!

    Much Love,

    amy

  6. Curtis -

Thanks for sharing this beautiful story, we did the same thing this weekend with left over birthday ballons, Audrey purposely requested we get extras to kiss and send to Nonna in heaven, I'm just glad she still remembers after almost 3 years.

I know you don't need to be told but you have an amazing daughter!

Much Love to you this Mother's Day!

  7. These are for you Frank!

    1. Two vultures board an airplane. Each is carrying two dead raccoons. The stewardess looks at them and says, "I'm sorry, gentlemen, only one carrion allowed per passenger."

    2. Two boll weevils grew up in the deep South. One went to Hollywood and became a famous actor. The other stayed behind in the cotton fields and never amounted to much. The second one, naturally, became known as the lesser of two weevils.

    3. Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, but when they lit a fire in the craft, it sank, proving once again that you can't have your kayak and heat it, too.

    4. A three-legged dog walks into a saloon in the Old West. He sidles up to the bar and announces: "I'm looking for the man who shot my paw."

    5. Did you hear about the Buddhist who refused Novocain during a root canal? He wanted to transcend dental medication.

    6. Some chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. "But why?" they asked as they moved off. "Because," he said, "I can't stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer."

    7. A woman has twins and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named "Ahmal". The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him "Juan". Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, "They're twins! If you've seen Juan, you've seen Ahmal".

    8. These friars were behind on their belfry payments, so they opened up a small florist shop to raise funds. Since everyone liked to buy flowers from the men of God, a rival florist across town thought the competition was unfair. He asked the good fathers to close down, but they wouldn't. He went back and begged the friars to close. They ignored him. So, the rival florist hired Hugh MacTaggart, the roughest and most vicious thug in town, to "persuade" them to close. Hugh beat up the friars and trashed their store, saying he'd be back if they didn't close up shop. Terrified, they did so, thereby proving that Hugh, and only Hugh, can prevent florist friars.

    9. Mahatma Gandhi walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail, and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. All this made him a super callused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

Glad to hear your son is getting better, I know that has to be a relief!

As for your hubby, well we all know how stubborn men can be, I just hope that he will trust in you and go see the oncologist earlier if the pain continues to get worse. I saw my Dad last night and he can hardly get around because of some pain from a bulging disc and I asked when we go back to see the doc and he said he wasn't, he was just going to live with it - not the same thing as cancer growing but more an insight into male pattern stubborness  which I know that you are more than aware of!!!!

Hugs and prayers continue to come your way!

    Much Love,

    Amy

  9. Mom has had a viral infection for the past 3 weeks or so and has a lot of trouble kicking the respitory piece - I am trying not to read to much into the lingering cough but am wondering if this is just a product of her only having one lung as this is really the first time she has had any other illness since her recurrance.

Frank, Bruce, Connie, Don M or anyone else, have you ever had an infection like this and had the cough linger???? How long did it take for it to go away? She did see the oncologist a couple of weeks ago and the doc didn't seem overly concerned but did want to see her back in a month (we are on a 2-3 month plan).

    Any info would be appreciated!

    Much Love,

    Amy

  10. An oldie but still funny

Towards the end of the golf course, Dave hit his ball into the woods and found it in a patch of pretty yellow buttercups. Trying to get his ball back in play,he ended up thrashing just about every buttercup in the patch.

All of a sudden.....POOF!! In a flash and puff of smoke, a little old woman appeared.

She said, "I'm Mother Nature! Do you know how long it took me to make those buttercups? Just for doing what you have done, you won't have any butter for your popcorn for the rest of your life: better still, you won't have any butter for your toast for the rest of your life. As a matter of fact, you'll never have any butter for anything the rest of your life!!!!

    Then POOF!......she was gone!

After Dave recovered from the shock, he hollered for his friend, "Fred, where are you?"

Fred yells back "I'm over here in the **Word not allowed** willows."

Dave shouts back, "DON'T SWING, Fred, for the love of God, DON'T SWING!!!!!"

  11. My Mom has NSCLC/adeno as well...read my profile below as our mother are very similar except for that when they did her surgery they DID NOT get clean margins. My Mom opted not to have the chemo post surgery for personal reasons. She was originally stage 3B but has been restaged at 4, however, she has been on Iressa (again not choosing traditional chemo)for almost a year now and has tremendous sucess with alot of shrinkage and her primary tumor staying stable.

I think it is pretty common now to have a course of chemo to kill any of the micro cells that are hanging around - PM me if you have any questions and good luck to you and your Mom!!!

  12. I was at the mall the other day eating at the food court. I noticed an old man watching a teenager sitting next to him. The teenager had spiked hair in all different colors: green, red, orange, and blue.

The old man stared and every time the teenager would turn around and look he found the old man staring.

When the teenager had enough he sarcastically asked: "What's the matter old man, never done anything wild in your life?" The old man

did not bat an eye in his response.

He replied, "Got drunk once and had sex with a

peacock. I was just wondering if you were my son."

  13. Don -

My Mom developed Acid Reflux after her pnuemonectomy and her doc told her it was because of the surgery and everything moving to fill in the empty space. She takes Nexium daily and has the head of her bed a little higher and she has to watch what she eats (and how much) because it causes her some real problems. Hopefully, yours can be controlled with Medication!

    Much Love,

    Amy

PS. I have acid reflux as well, it developed after a severe case a pnuemonia and I have taken Prilosec, Protonix and Nexium - Protonix and Nexium have worked wonders for me!!!

  14. Snowflake -

I agree that's why I wasn't quite sure what to make of it, that and the comment about adenocarcinoma being primarily caused by unfiltered cigarette's as I was under the impression (and I am not sure where I heard this) that adeno was common in non-smokers. Hopefully someone will be along that will have some additional insight into this. I am really curious now!

    Much Love,

  15. This was on our Employee Assistance Site this morning thought I would share although I am not sure what to think of it.

    Lung cancer hits women differently

    Source: Detroit Free Press

    Author: PATRICIA ANSTETT

    Date: April 19, 2005

Doctors are discovering gender differences in lung cancer.

Not only are women catching up to men in getting the disease, they are more likely to develop lung cancer before age 50, according to a comprehensive analysis of lung cancer in the United States.

Yet women have a better chance of being free of cancer five years later, at every stage of diagnosis.

The study by the University of Michigan and Wayne State Medical School researchers was published in the March issue of the journal Chest, published by the American College of Chest Physicians. It analyzed 22,572 cancer patients, 36 percent of them women, in the federal cancer registry known as SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results).

Overall, women and men typically are diagnosed with lung cancer at about the same age: 66 years, the study found.

But 8.6 percent of women were diagnosed before 50, compared with 6.9 percent of men.

Women also tend to have different kinds of lung cancer. More women are diagnosed with adenocarcinomas, non-small-cell lung cancers found in the outer reaches of the lungs. They are most likely linked to the use of filtered cigarettes, says Dr. Gregory Kalemkerian, senior author of the study. Adenocarcinomas accounted for 44.7 percent of the diagnoses of women in the study. Small-cell cancers, those in hormonal cells in the lungs, accounted for 22.6 percent.

By comparison, squamous cell carcinomas, another type of non-small-cell cancer, found in lung airways, accounted for 36.3 percent of lung cancers in men, followed by adenocarcinomas, diagnosed in 33.2 percent.

    Other findings:

Incidence of lung cancer in men peaked in 1984, at 72.5 cases per 100,000 people. It declined to 47 for each 100,000 by 1999. By comparison, incidence rates for women peaked at 33.1 per 100,000 in 1991, and have held steady between 30.2 and 32.3 per 100,000 from 1992 to 1999.

Metastatic disease was the most common stage at diagnosis for men (43.4 percent) and women (43.9 percent).

Kalemkerian says that although the study has some limitations, largely because the SEER database has no information about a person's smoking history and habits, it provides good information for future studies to analyze gender differences in lung cancer.
