Bev (UK)
Hi my name is Bev I live in England, and my dad has recently been diagnosed with lung cancer in the left lung. It is in its advanced stages. I lost my mum to Pancreatic Cancer this Feb, she fought the disease for 2 1/2 years. This was a dreadul time. Dad seems to be declining rapidly. Dreadful night with him last night, due to him coughing and vomiting blood. Anybody else had this problem. Bev
ellakc2
Hi Bev, I have no suggestions for you just to give you support. My dad passed of pancreatic cancer in 99, it is an ugly cancer. Not that they all aren't, it just seems pancreatic is sooooo incurable. My dad survived 4 yrs and 2 months. And I attribute it to his excellent surgeon. He had a surgery called a whiple which probably gave him the time it did. As for your dad I don't know what to say. Is he in treatment? Good luck and I will pray for you. patut
Hi Bev. The blood may be from irritations from coughing so hard. It happened to my hubbie when he was having hard coughing sessions. Our onc wasn't as concerened as I was, and we did pass through that o.k. He was put on a strong cough medicine which did help. My best to both of you! Bev (UK)
Thanks for reply patuk and ellack2 its real nice to know that other people are there. I don't think people really understand until they go through it. Got a lot of hospital appt to go to this week to see if they are going to offer dad chemo. ellakc2
Hi again Bev, Your absolutely correct. People do not understand. It's just like anything else in life unless you experience it you don't know. Just try to get as much info. from the Dr.'s as you can. I don't know how the Dr.s are in the UK, but a tape recorder would be advisable. Just to remember all the details. Good luck w/ all the Dr.s and I will keep you in my prayers. If you wish to pm me you can. Take care.
paddy
I agree with Ellack, a tape recorder is the answer. I asked our Oncologist if I could use it and he agreed right away. The Very Best to you and your Dad. I am so sorry that you have to come here. Love , Paddy
cindi o'h
hi Bev, If I get cut and I know that it is not life threatening, then I don't worry about it too much. I would say though, that puking blood is something I have yet to do. But if I did have blood coming out of places that I never did before, then I would get my little self to an emergency room for an evaluation....pronto. cindi o'h (o'houlighan)
Kaffie
Bev, Be sure to write down as many questions as you can think of before you go to the doctor. If you are anything like me, you will forget half of what you wanted to ask without that list and it's always good to get a 2nd opinion. I learned more from this web site than I did any of my doctors. Good luck to you and your father Kathy

stand4hope
Hi Bev and WELCOME! I'm really sorry to hear that you have a second parent now facing cancer. It is so hard. We have several members here who have had the same experience. I hope it doesn't sound like I'm prying, but has your dad seen an oncologist? I agree with the GP that the symptoms he is having don't sound good, but from the little you've told us so far, I kind of question the call for hospice already. You also said it was "in its advanced stages". Do you know what type of cancer he has (i.e., SCLC, NSCLC) or the actual stage (i.e., limitied/extensive, Stage Ia, IIa, IIIa, IIIb, IV)? I don't think it would necessarily be considered advanced unless there has been some spread to the other lung or to other areas of his body. Like I said, I hope you don't think I'm prying, but many here have learned that second and even third opinions have saved their lives. Something to think about. Please keep us posted. God bless you, Peggy
London Lad
Bev, I'm another UK person here. Where if you don't mind me asking is your dad being seen? My dad was diagnosed March 13th with stage IV NSCLC. Getting to that point his GP and chest physician were between them hopeless. The initial oncologist he then saw whilst he was a least a cancer specialist had a lousy attitude and offered no hope. So I got my dad referred to a cancer specialist centre (Royal Marsden, London). The staff there have been fantastic. Attitude and mindset of sufferers and carers is so important. There are several other excellent cancer centres around the UK. One thing for example is the fact that they tend to be able to get access to drugs still yet to be approved in the UK, Iressa for example. I'm no physician but right after dad was diagnosed he coughed terrible, especially early morning and late night, including some blood. Since dad's been on oramorph for his pain the coughing has improved markedly. I could go on and would love to share more if it would help, especially if it's anything UK specific. This site is the last place in the world you'd ever wish to find yourself coming to but I've found it to be occupied by some damn fine human beings. mhutch1366
Bev, I'm sorry your dad isn't doing so well. Did you get an oncologist yet? Please keep us posted. XOXOX Prayers always, MaryAnn
David P
Hi there Bev. Sorry to hear about your mother, and now your father, but the coughing up blood is pretty standard in some cases - it was with mine anyway. Don't listen to anyone who writes your father off saying there is no hope. I have found that there are many cases where people go on surviving indefinitely after the so called experts havd decreed there be no hope. You have to find the right people to help your father. I think it would be a good thing to hook up with "London Lad" as he seems to have already gone through what you are going through right now, and is satisfied with the results. Take care, and keep us posted. David P.
slinaresholz
Welcome Bev and I hope they can do something to help your Dad. There are people in stage 4 who are doing pretty well. Hospice will also be a great help to you. They were wonderful to my Dad and a friend of mine who died recently of lung cancer. Sending prayers your way. Guest wendyfl
Hi Bev, Very sorry to hear about your Dad. My close friend for 7 years has just been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. We are all very sad, scared. She is a very healthy, vibrant person, a non-smoker. We ride bikes 30+ miles a day. One day she is short of breath, and everything just started from there. Next thing we learnt she is having this horrible disease. We do what we can to make her feel fully supported, dearly loved. Warm Regards, Wendy [ quote=Bev (UK)]Hi my name is Bev I live in England, and my dad has recently been diagnosed with lung cancer in the left lung. It is in its advanced stages.
