I've been reading on this site for about 2 months and decided to finally jump in. I do a lot of researching on the net and this seems to be the most active site. My mother was diagnosed 11/04 w/ NSCLC. Still not clear as to what stage, but she has a 3cm tumor in her left lung and multiple spots in both lungs. Some lymph node involvement. The strange thing about it is she has 0 symptoms, even now with chemo (alimta and carboplatin). I'm going to try and get her on this site but right now she's just sort of ignoring the problem, as is my father. We're thinking about the Cancer Center of America in Tulsa, has anyone had experiece there? Thanks for such a great site!!

welcome joyce.

its good your mom has no symptoms. I am not sure of her stage either eith the mets. I would guess 3 or 4 but I am only guessing.

I have no experiance with CTS as mom and dad both got treated locally. I know people here have gone there though.

If your parents choose to ignore the dx. there isn't anything you can do. Its good she is doing chemo. But if she isn't going to care about her own health, nothing you can say or do will change their minds.

welcome to the board though.

Welcome to our site. Boy your Mom was lucky to get a CT and diagnosis with no symptoms. There usually are no symtoms in early stages of lung cancer.

Many here are in Texas so I will let them jump in and answer your question. Meanwhile please keep us posted. Donna G

Welsome from a fellow Texan. No help tho on CTC as mom had her treatment here in Tyler. MDAnderson is good though, why may I ask are you wanting to chg? I had thought if the need ever arouse I would take mom to Houston, never really thought about Tulsa.

My mom aslo pratty much ignored her disease and still kinda does. I did all the research, talking to drs, everything. She just went for the treatments. Still today if someone askes her a question she refers them to me. Cant say as I really liked this, but she never wanted to talk about it, and there was never a doubt in her mind(that i ever saw) that the treatments would work and they did.

Keep us posted and just be there for your mom.

It's good to hear you're in a similar situation with your mother and her treatments. I do ALL the research! Sounds like your mother is doing real well!!! I hope we have a similar outcome.

Cancer Center of America is just an option. I'm trying to think ahead to what if MD Anderson doesn't work out. It does sound silly though, since MD Anderson is the #1 cancer center in the U.S. We like it there, however, she gets her chemo treatments in Dallas (that's where my parents live) and comes to Houston for her scans and appointments. This is all still real new and we've only been to MD Anderson twice, but are scheduled to go 3/22 to see how the alimta and carboplatin have been working. We'll keep praying!

Welcome. I am sorry you need to be here. The members that have posted about going to CTC have posted good things about them. Mostly how they appreciate them addressing all aspects, diet, atttitude etc. and not just the cancer treatment. Good luck to you. Keep us posted on your mom's progress.

Hi and Welcome!

Yes, my mom goes to the CTCA and we love it. Everyone we've ever talked to there has agreed with us in that, 'if you have to get treated for cancer, this is the place to be.' One lady came from md anderson and had said they were just a 'number' there, and that they felt like they really mattered here. It truly is a wonderful place, treating the mind, body, and spirit. As we all know, nutrition, and faith are a BIG part of beating this monster. Feel free to pm me if you have any more questions.

You're in my prayers.

Christy

Hello Son of Joyce!

I was just looking for the post by Brian, a son of a woman who battles lung cancer with the help of her family. It is a wonderful cartoon/story written from the heart. We all enjoyed this story as it unfolds and we could all relate to the details that Brian put in.

try this..momscancer.com

see if that gets you there.

At any rate,

Welcome!

Thanks everyone. I feel very privelaged to be a part of this board. Fianlly a place I can speak about my mother's disease and have some understanding ears. Spoke to my mother this morning, she had her second round of chemo last Mon. (3-7) and she's doing great. Hasn't slowed down one bit except the fact she's tired around 8pm. I hope her chemo is working. I hope everyone has a great weekend!!

many of us are visited by him regularly. It IS a good thing.

Also, I just looked up for ...........momscancer.com

I encourage you to look at this and read the story... you will be surprised at how unalone you will feel. It is a worthwhile read. Your mom might get a kick out of it also.

Thanks Cindy. I have visited that site and read the cartoon a couple of times but haven't shown it to my mother. You're right, she might enjoy it. My hesitation has been the comic strip is very realistic, and to be honest she's not ready to face reality when it comes to her disease. I know this sounds wrong, but thus far her treatments haven't effected her much at all. Because of this she's able to carry on normally as if she didn't have lung cancer. So what I do is let her keep her head in the sand until things change. I don't know if this is right but my sister and father agree this is best for her now. Our family has never had to deal with disease at all, my grandparents are in their 90s and very active.

It is excellent that your mom is having no symptoms. As long as she is getting treatment than she is really not ignoring the problem.... just going about the business of living...... hopefully for a long and happy time. I wish you all the best.
