Just watched House on the Fox channel. It was not the main story but they had a young women who came to the clinic with anemia and a cough. They did an xray and House said she had terminal Squamous Cell Lung cancer. The young women doctor did not want to believe it. She put her through the bronchial washing and couldn't find that an infection could have caused the white outs on the xray. They did a lung biopsy which came back postive and showed House was correct. The last seen she had to break the news to this young women.

I love the show but was very disappointed at how they portrayed this LC issue

.

House looked at the xray and said she is terminal, tell her and we are not wasting our time on her.He felt spending their time on a death row inmate was of more value.

Unfortunetely, that is the attitude many times about LC in general and it shouldn't be. The fact that they portrayed that as a "no hope" was sad at best for LC.

Love the show. Watched it too, they are missing the meaning and opportunity to tell the public about this dreadful disease. As everyone else, they are mis-informed. They just have a few pieces.

By the way my husbands company provides medical equipment to the TV set for this show...

Praying for a cure...

The up side was it never did mention smoking. They showed the xray,( tumors in bothe lungs). They also portrayed the young women as a normal likable person and the women doctor really wanted so badly for it not to be cancer, she just hated to tell her what they had found. Everyone knows Dr.House is quite a character!

I too love the show, but I was disappointed in the show last night. They dismissed the LC patient, instead of using her story line to educate the public. But I suppose they may not feel that is their duty; afterall, it is supposed to be entertainment. Also, this show has mentioned LC at least twice before that I can recall. Just wondering why it seems to pop up more as a theme than the usual diseases.

Just my thoughts, I saw the show too and it was very uncomfortable to sit on the couch with Bill and watch the lack of hope in the secondary storyline...but aside from this episode, we love the show. I took note that the entire lung cancer storyline was not very indepth and commented to Bill that this scene was most likely (almost 100% sure) taped prior to Peter Jenning's death or Dana Reeve's diagnosis. I'm will to bet that lung cancer storylines will become more prominent as the public becomes more aware and more educated. What is the saying..."any publicity is better than no publicity".

Beth,

I caught a bit of a "bad vibration" from my husband during last night's show. I could feel it made him uncomfortable and he was asking "what type of lc is that?" sort of mentally comparing it to me, I think. Being married 28 years - sometimes we don't have to talk, just look at each other and can shake our heads  Up and down on the rollercoaster we go!!!!

At the first of this episode when House first saw the x-ray, he said "advanced," so I figured that's what he meant - advanced. And from what happened later, I think that's what it actually was in the storyline.

I think this show is great, having come from the medical world myself. Last night's episode, I thought, showed 2 sides of this young woman's story, and what I thought was so worthwhile was the underlying "message" about the stages of grief, and how the young doctor was going through them for her patient. I also thought that the juxtaposition between the young woman and the death row inmate was quite thought provoking about the value of life itself, and how people in the medical field aren't there to make decisions about the value of one life compared to another.

No, they didn't touch on all the things we discuss here, because that's not what the show is about, IMO. As it so often does, this show gives information to make people think. And obviously that works, because we're here discussing it today!

I actually thought they did a good job. My view on it was the message that LC can strike anyone, does not disrciminate. This was a young girl, and no mention of smoking.

I have had two people comment to me lately that they never knew certain facts about lung cancer (well they did, I told them, but I guess they ignored me). Both my boss and friend from NY mentioned within the last month that they are seeing more and more on the news that LC is so common, non smokers, etc. They told me they were shocked, and I think that was the message of House.

Of course I have this view b/c I read this post before watching it, we had Tivod it and watched it tonight ;)

Brian's first comment was thank goodness I finally got the chest xray I was begging for this week (I have had a chronic cough for a month now), or I'd be up all night worrying and bothering him ;) And when my dad watches it he maybe will see why I was concerned and take back the name calling

The nurse at work told me today that she read an article on women and LC and they think it might have to do w/ all the chemicals in the cleaning fluids we use. Food for thought. DAH!!!

I have heard the same thing about the Chemicals in the Cleaning fluids we use, and the fertalizer on the grass, and even the hair sprays, etc... Althouth, like anything, we can go on and on with the could-a would-a should-a's of where it comes from. But, I do think its a combination of a LOT of things that cause Lung Cancer.

That show bothered my family too.

I saw it from the nurse side.

I think that youg Dr had to deal with her own feelings of telling someone they had a terminal disease. It is TOUGH being the one to deliver the news. A Dr needs to develop a thick skin or they won't make it. They also need the bedside manner (House has not learned that-he is like my surgeon!) to go along with it to make a Great Dr.

A little late....So my parents finally watched it last night (gotta love VCRs and Tivo).......my mom called me today and said " I can certainly understand why people from your website were upset, I did not like it, how dare he just dismiss her like that and not even try to help her.".

I told her that it was a tv show and besides that, Dr House is a diagnostician, not oncologist, so after diagnosis, he is out of it and in real life she probably would have been sent to specialists :)

She still did not like the attitude.
