My dad has been diagnosed with Stage IV NSCLC with mets to the liver (not sure of anywhere else at this point). I have already learned so much from everyone else's heartfelt stories here, but the question I have - we live in Michigan, where is the best place to go for treatment? My dad feels comfortable at a local hospital that is just starting their onocology dept. I just want have the best information possible, so any help would be appreciated.

I would go to the local hospital but definitely pursue a second opinion at university of michigan in Ann Arbor. See Dr. Kalekemiam(?sp). Good luck

I would suggest that you do both. Go to the local hospital and find out what their treatment plan will be, then go to U of M for a second opinion to make sure they concur. You will need to take copies of all his scans, etc.

Dr Kalemkarian at the U of M lung cancer clinic is excellent. Your dad's case will be reviewed by the entire discipinary team, not just him. This way, your dad is close to home for chemo treatments etc. and not running to Ann Arbor for everything, and you have the peace of mind knowing he's getting the correct treatment.

This is what we did and it worked out well. Our local cancer clinic was very interested in U of M's opinion.

I would have to say U of M, but Karmonos and Henry Ford not far off, through my treatments at U of M , I know they have discussed my problems with Karmonos and Henry Ford. As far as Dr Kalemkerian is conscererned, not sure one could find a better more honest, caring oncologist. I know he gave me a lot of hope. He said what I had was very, very serious but it was treatable and He and the other Drs on my case would do all they could to help me, and the rest was to God .

Good luck with your Dad, Diane
