Pain Management Hotline

Recommended Posts

I am a member of Physicians Education Resource. I received this today and perhaps it may help some of you. If you suffer from chronic or severe pain, this would be something to share with your doctors as well.

Chronic and/or severe pain can be debilitating, with a significant negative impact on patient quality of life and the activities of daily living. Conventional therapeutic strategies for pain management include pharmacologic interventions, rehabilitation, and complementary approaches. Within recent years, advances in our understanding of the molecular basis of pain responses have led to the development of novel agents, including new drugs targeting neural receptors and ion channels. In addition, there has been an increase in the number of effective opioid, nonopioid, and adjuvant analgesics, providing physicians and nurses with a greater variety of options for their patients who suffer from disease-related pain. For patients with pain resistant to conventional treatments, long-lasting drug delivery systems, such as the intrathecal pump, which delivers medication directly to the spinal cord, might provide enhanced pain relief.

Physicians' Education Resource is pleased to provide an efficient means for answering chronic and/or severe pain management-related questions in the form of a hotline. This hotline has been established so that physicians and nurses involved in the care of patients experiencing disease- or treatment-related pain, can consult directly with a faculty opinion leader in the pain management field by calling or e-mailing with questions Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Central Standard Time. Within 24-48 hours, you can expect a response to your question directly from the on-call faculty member.
