RandyW
Teen to continue cancer battle Despite difficult treatments, boy’s attitude still positive By Amber Baker The Daily Reporter-Herald At 15, Justin Warner of Loveland was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a form of bone cancer. Almost three years later, the cancer that started in his hip has moved into his lungs. He’s been through multiple chemotherapy and radiation treatments, with little result. The treatments cleared his cancer for six months, but recently the 11/2-centimeter tumor in his left lung grew to 21/2 centimeters, and three more have appeared. Justin’s doctors have decided to stop chemo and start some experimental treatments that will begin Monday, his mother said. He will be hooked up to an infusion pump for 48 hours every other week for six weeks. Unfortunately, his prognosis is not very good, said Connie Warner, Justin’s mother. “But we’re hoping that these treatments will at least slow it down. And Lord willing, cure it. But we don’t know,” she said. Despite everything, Justin has retained a positive attitude, Connie said. “He almost always has a great attitude,” she said. “Every once in a while, he’ll get down in the dumps, but I’m not sure how much of that is due to this or if it’s just a teenage thing.” The decision to continue treatment has been left completely up to Justin, she added. “He’s the one going through it physically,” she said. “His body is the one that’s being put through all this.” Connie said Justin wasn’t sure for a while if he was going to continue treatment. But after a six-month break from treatments, he’s decided to stay with it. “He’s going to give it all he’s got,” his mother said. Barbecue Benefit for Justin To help with the family’s medical bills, friends have organized a benefit for Justin Warner on Saturday at the Loveland Sports Park, 950 N. Boyd Lake Ave. It will feature a barbecue, raffle and silent auction. Tickets cost $10 for adults. Children 5 and younger eat free. Several mothers of Justin’s friends have put the benefit together.
