jodi1715 Posted September 4, 2006 Posted September 4, 2006 Back in the first of june my dad was having problems with his hips and knees hurting and a lump on his left shoulder blade. His doctor said it was just arthritis and the lump was a pulled muscle. The medicine he gave him did not help. So my mom took him to a orthopdeic specialist. He had x-rays done that showed nothing. He then had a cat scan done. Then a mri and cat scan. Last he did a bone scan and told my mom it looked cancer to take him to his regular doctor. By this time my dad could not even walk. We had to take him by ambulance to the er. They did a cat scan and found part of his right lung had collasped. They transfered him to a better hospital. That was the first of August they found out it is small cell lung cancer. It had at that time already moved into his brain, his bones, and he has tumors on his spinal column. They started three weeks of radiation then did one day of chemo. He got so sick we took him last Tuesday and his blood pressure was 50 something over 30 something. His liver started failing. He spent a week in the hospital and got out saturday. The doctor said they could not do anymore chemo or radiation because he would never make it through. They have called in hospice. The doctor told my mom more or less that it has gone to far. It could be two weeks or longer. No one knows how long. My boys are all in school and helping me when I break down. jodi1715 Quote
MsC1210 Posted September 4, 2006 Posted September 4, 2006 Hello Jodi and welcome I am so sorry about your dad's situation. I am glad you have posted and shared your story with us. Although I personally cannot give you much in the way of advice I am sure that the others will be along soon with some wonderful words of wisdom. I will say that a 2nd opinion from a comprehensive cancer treatment center would most likely be a very good move. Please keep us posted and let us know how we can help. Sending prayers to you and your family, Chris Quote

RandyW Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 Is he in the St Josephs Health Care System? He needs an Oncologist if he has not been seen by one. Could there be underlying Cause of Low blood Pressure? My wife went throught that and a Pleural Effusion Cleared it up as I remember. Ehat Chemo did they try? Biopsy to determine Cancer? Make sure there is an Oncologist From I believe St josephs seeing or has seen him. Sounds Like Drs are giving up too easy for strange reason. Sending Prayers and Positive thoughts. Let us know. Darci Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 Jodi, I am so sorry to hear about your dad. I am hoping that others here will have more information for you. I would consider getting a second opinion, but it is up to your dad what course of treatment he wants to follow. The best you can do for him is to give him as much encouragement and help as you can. Good luck, keep us posted! Quote
Char81062 Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 Jodi, My Mom was dx with sclc earlier this year with a brain met. She had 3 Chemo treatments, once every 21 days which was really rough on her BUT she got the news that all the tumors were gone. Your father is going through the same thing that My Mom went through and it is a terrible depression that no one could seem to pull her out of. When you get this news everyone is in shock and you can't seem to wrap your arms around it. We seemed to be in crisis mode constantly. I agree with the posts that say get a 2nd opinion. Please keep us posted and as Don says let us know how we may help you through this difficult time. -Char Quote
jodi1715 Posted September 15, 2006 Author Posted September 15, 2006 My dad has gone hill very fast just from the last time I posted. Me and My mom went today to the funeral home. The hospice nurse told us the other day the reason he sleeps so much is part of the decline. My dad has already departed us in his mind. He can no longer think and I think that's the cancer on the brain. My dad is just a shell of a man. I still can not believe how fast this came on and how fast he went down hill. The doctor said they had a 30% chance of the first chemo working it had already spread so far by the time they found it. jodi1715 Quote

jodi1715 Posted September 25, 2006 Author Posted September 25, 2006 It looks like the end is close. The hospice nurse said she was surprised she did not get a call in the middle of the night last night. My dad's bp was 70over47. Going down all the time. It is so hard losing a parent and know there is not a thing you can do for them. Quote
