tumor markers

I've noticed a question about tumor markers on the SCLC board. Does everyone with nsclc get tested with tumor markers? I ask this because I don't think my father has ever had this test. Do most people have this test? If so, how often? Is it accurate especially when the cancer is multifocal? Is there anything else I should know?

Thanks!

There isnt (I believe) any consensus on the use of tumor markers for lung cancer. There is more proof that some are useful but I think the jury is still out.

For SCLC, I have read that many Drs use LDH and NSE.

For NSCLC, CEA is used often. CYFRA seems like it may be useful to measure after the first found of chemo

Hi Gail;

I agree with John, seems jury is out, however my doc plots my CEA readings and has them done every 3 months. I think, he's pretty thorough, he seems to use it as another indicator, along with my general health and scan results. I see him tomorrow, I'll ask him about it.

God bless and be well

I, too, have a Bronchioloalveolar feature to my lung cancer, and the only tumor marker that has ever shown any changes that can correlate to recurrence or tumor growth has been the CA 125, a tumor marker used in tracking ovarian cancer. I know of other BACers who have used the CEA to track tumor progression-regression, and a few who used CA19.

My dad's doctor uses the markers as a guide. He recently went from about a 5 on his CEA test to a 15! He was then started on Gemzar, and his levels have gone down to 11. I'm so confused about what all of this might mean, and my dad seems to do everything he can to keep us uninformed and away from his doctors. Does anyone know what these particular level readings may indicate? Thanks a million.
