RandyW
"Frugal" Floridian leaves $35 million to UM medical research CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — A Miami resident described by those who knew her as frugal during her 100 years of life has left more than $35 million dollars to diabetes and cancer research at the University of Miami. Eugenia “Gene ” Dodson donated two-thirds of the money to the university's Diabetes Research Institute. The rest goes to UM's Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dodson died last December, less than one month shy of her 101 birthday. Doctor W. Jarrad Goodwin of the university cancer center says that Dodson didn't want anyone to know about the donation. Dodson lost part of a lung to cancer and her two brothers died from complications to diabetes. She saved her money by living below her means in a small condo and refusing in-home care until she was nearly 100. (Copyright 2006 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
