Hard Riddle

This is a riddle I got at school and I can't solve it. My teacher can't even solve it.

I'm used to reverse a positive thought;

You'll need me to wear those shoes you just bought.

What am I?

Please help, I've been trying to solve it for a week.

The only thing I can come up with is "not/knot".

(But I guess that would depend on what type of shoe they are talking about. )
