lc46
Hi Everyone-I haven't posted about my Mom lately -we were just enjoying the "normalcy" of our lives again-I have been on here reading still and posting on other peoples subjects but to be honest my Mom has been doing so wonderful there was nothing really to post. So now I need some advice-My Mom just got done her 36th concurret radiation treatment last Friday-she hardly had any pain @ all right up until the end-within the past 4 days she is in so much pain she can barely eat anything-also has been throwing up?? They gave her Oxycodone-she doesn't want to take-so then she got Tylenol/Codeine-she is taking those. I got her pudding, ice cream, she is drinking milk shakes-but says it all hurts-even applesauce-the most. I know a lot of you have had the same radiation and would really appreciate any suggestions for the pain that helped you. Thanks Dar
blueeye
My Mom was started on Carafate right from the beginning and then a Lidocaine viscous solution. Both are nasty tasting but she still uses the Lidocaine. What about the "magic mouthwash" that I've read about? The pharmacist mixes it up and it's Lidocaine, benadryl and I think Maloxx? (The last thing may not be right.) Also remember that the radiation side effects can and will get worse for two weeks AFTER the end of treatment...hang in there! laban
Hi Dar, So sorry to hear Mom is having such awful pain. I can remember when Bill had such severe esophagus pain and could not eat. When he started throwing up he was referred to a GI doctor because he had a stricture in his esophagus from the radiation. He ended up having several dilatations. He also did take Carafate and used the Magic Mouthwash some but said it didn't work for him. He too could or would not take pain medicine because of constipation. He was miserable for a time, but just know that what Mom is going through will get better with time. Keep the faith, your Mom sounds like a very strong woman. wendyr
Hi Dar: time will eventually take of the esophagus pain but when Maurice had it, he got the Magic Mouthwash. It's a RX but the pharmacist compounds it. Our pharmacist used mint flavored Maalox, lidocaine & Benadryl. You swallow it right before eating & it numbs the esophagus. It helped a little, just enough for him to be able to eat. Hope this helps. Good Luck & God Bless wendyr
mamasbabygirl
As you can see from my profile, this was some of the orst pain my mom had. She tried magic mouthwash, but even drinking water hurt her. It WILL subside and that is the good thing, but sometimes it takes a few weeks.
Heather_T
This was my worst thing also. Just tell her to try and eat what ever she can get down and keep hydrated. I lived on homestyle chicken noodle soup for almost 3 months. I would drink some water but I just didn't like it so I had alot of decaf tea. I could not drink anything carbonated. It just all around sucks. I hope your mom starts to feel better soon. The mouth washes never worked for me.
missyk
Glad to hear Mom's getting to the end of radation!! Yay! I did also want to say that with my mom, the most severe of the pain (with the added irritation of vomiting)came from thrush. That could be adding to the irritation your mom's experiencing. Mom said it was the worst thing she ever experienced but once it was cleared up she was able to eat again without the truely horrible pain. Best wishes for your Mom and that whatever's causing her the pain is cleared up soon!
laban
Drs prescribed Diflucan for Bill's thrush along with esophagitis. You can tell if she has thrush by looking at her tongue. It will be whitish or gray and look like there is a coating on it. Please believe, things will get better.
trish2418
Like the others have said, this point in the radiation treatment was as bad as it got for me, too. I existed on creamed soups, iced green tea, and homemade slushies. It does begin to get better about 2 weeks after radiation is completed and then just keeps getting better and better. Good luck to your Mom. trish
dchurchi
sorry your mom is going through this Alan had the same problem. Anything COLD seem to really increase the pain, so ice cream was out of the question for him. Cool or room temp was about all Alan could tolerate. Nothing too hot or cold and very soft food only. It all eventually passed with time. I hope your mom bounces back soon.
lc46
Thank you everyone for your great tips. Let's hope if it's burning her esophagus this way-it also is burning the cancer that is left.... Hope everyone has a nice Memorial Day Weekend- Peace and Strength to Everyone. Dar
Bev'sSister
My sister had that too..and she used the magic mouthwash and ate immediately afterward. She said that helped a lot. Pain meds and soft foods..maccaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes were her favorite. It does ease up in time. Beverly was so hungry she actually ate fried chicken while she was hurting..she said "It hurt so GOOD!' I think the best thing is to eat what you can get down. dscherer
I also can relate. It was very difficult for my mom also. SHe also had the magic mouthwash and pain meds. It was still a struggle. SHe would have carnation instant breakfast shakes. We would fotify jello with powdered egg whites. It does get better with time. I agree also that if it can cause this much damage I pray it is also doing damage to the cancer!!! Keep strong, Dana
