nomadawn
Hi, My mum has been experiencing difficulty swallowing for last two weeks. She says it feels like there is a lump in her throat and the food is struggling to get past. Has anybody got any ideas on what could be causing this? She hasn't had radiation just chemo. God bless Debbie x
john
Chemo can cause dry mouth and other oral problems and can also cause ulcers in the throat which may result in difficulty swallowing I think it would be less likely the tumor since I belive the profile said there was a response to the chemo Ask the Dr, there are some medications and different rinses that can help with oral problems due to chemo
teriw
Have your mom ask the doctor to examine her for any type of infection, such as thrush in the mouth/throat.
wendyr
Hi Debbie: you might want to ask the doctor about Magic Mouthwash. It's only available on RX but the pharmacist (chemist) compounds it. It's made up of lidocaine, benadryl and mint maalox. It numbs the mouth and esophagus and makes eating easier. Good Luck & God bless wendyr
Suzie Q
Do call the onc and discuss this new change. She may or may not require a GI workup.
nomadawn
Thank you all for your kind responses. We did mention it to the onc and he said he would know more when he gets the CT scan results in the next week or so - this made me worry !!! She has got a big ulcer on the roof of her mouth but says it is not that the swallowing is painful but rather as though there was an obstruction. I know her tumour was high up in one of the bronchus which is why I am worried that this may be the cause but as I said her last x ray showed improvement. I will certainly try some of things suggested. Thanks & god bless Debbie x
