Cancer Center Using New Radiation Therapy Equipment

The June E. Nylen Cancer Center has a new piece of equipment that will help treat cancer in Siouxland.

The "Trilogy" is a new radiation therapy equipment purchased for $3.5-million.

The equipment has three uses, stereotactic radiosurgery... image-guided radiation therapy... and intensity modulated radiation therapy.

Doctors say this treatment is more precise for cancers of the lung, prostate and breast. "This enables use to do a CT scan while the patient is being treated both before and during and this will help us to visualize our target better and allow us to give a more focused type of radiation," said Dr. Greg Naden, radiation oncologist.

The "Trilogy" will also offer neurosurgeons another treatment options for brain tumors.

Instead of a patient having to have brain surgery... they can be treated as an outpatient and spend less time in recovery
