Iressa, BAC, NSCLC

This seem quite interesting for anyone with BAC. The Iressa seems to be given at double the standard dose. The article is also interesting for anyone with NSCLC

A promising new study (2) investigated the role of gefitinib(Iressa) 500mg per day as monotherapy in treating patients with BAC. The response rate of BAC to conventional chemotherapy is generally considered to be low and the increasing incidence of BAC highlights the need for alternative, effective treatment options. The preliminary results of the study revealed patients achieved both complete and partial responses and that gefitinib was generally well tolerated.

Data from patients who received gefitinib as monotherapy on a compassionate use basis, also revealed positive antitumour activity and clinical benefits of gefitinib:

I was a participant in this study, and I have to tell you that for me Iressa kept my tumor stable for a period of time, but it also eased my breathing to a significant degree beginning just a matter of days after having started the 500 mg a day.

During the mediastinal disection part of my surgery in May the lymph nodes throughout the right side were removed...and though they showed no evidence of cancer it was thought to be due to "...treatment effect...". The only treatment I had been given besides surgeries was the Iressa Trial. So unless those nodes (including subcarinal up to 3cm in size) just spontaneously healed I think that Iressa killed off what ailed them.

I've been reading that Tarceva is actually more effective than Iressa for BACers.

Hi Fay,

Thanks for the info. I’m going to mention Tarceva also when I see my doctor next. Peace, take care and God Bless.

Tarceva is supposed to be stronger than Iressa from what I have read. I believe it was not from the article was not from OSI, the drug maker of Tarceva, but I could be wrong.

The Dr from UC-Davis, said the combo of Tarceva and Herceptin is very effective for BAC
