DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — Mayor Calvin Kruk of Dawson Creek, B.C., has died. He was 43.

Kruk has been the mayor of the Peace region city since 2005.

He was first elected to city council in 1999.

City administrator Jim Chute says Kruk died Sunday morning of lung cancer after being diagnosed two months ago.

He is survived by his wife, Faith, and son, Austin, 12.

Chute says the town is shocked at Kruk's death.

Kruk was born and raised in Maple Ridge, B.C., moving to Dawson Creek in 1990 where he worked in radio.

He left broadcasting to manage the local performing arts centre.

Kruk was also involved in the community serving on such boards such as the 1998 Northern B.C. Winter Games.

Chute says the one-term mayor leaves a legacy that includes the completion of the city's new multi-plex facility and a booming economy.

"We have a very vibrant economy now," Chute says. "He's going to be primarily remembered for what leader he was how he had a vision for the community and how he stuck to it.

"He managed to accomplish a lot in a short period of time
