WASHINGTON, January 29, 2016 - LUNGevity President Andrea Ferris, a member of the Stand Up to Cancer Lung Cancer Dream Team, presented the team’s newly launched website, a patient-centric resource that enables users to be active, informed participants in their diagnosis and treatment, at a poster session at the 2016 Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C) Scientific Summit.

Ferris is an advocacy representative on the Lung Cancer Dream Team, created in April 2015 to address treatment options for patients with KRAS-mutant lung cancer. She helped create the patient-friendly website and guided its December launch. The resource will help patients understand their disease and treatment options, report on the Lung Cancer Dream Team’s research progress, and inform patients of open clinical trials.

“This patient population has never seen significant progress,” noted Ferris. “Our goal in creating this website was to provide hope to people diagnosed with KRAS-mutant lung cancer. We designed the site with the patient in mind, so that they can be informed participants in their health care decisions.”

“While there have been meaningful steps forward in lung cancer research, treatments for patients with the KRAS mutation have seen little success,” said Jeffrey Engelman, MD, PhD, member of the Lung Cancer Dream Team’s Scientific Research team. “To be successful, it’s crucial that our team connect the science to the patient, and connect the patient to the science through enrollment in clinical trials.  We can’t accomplish these goals without advocates who ensure that the patient voice and needs are incorporated.”

About Lung Cancer

  • 1 in 15 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer in their lifetime
  • More than 221,000 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year
  • About 60%-65% of all new lung cancer diagnoses are among people who have never smoked or are former smokers
  • Lung cancer takes more lives than the next three leading cancers (colorectal, breast, and prostate) combined
  • Only 17% of all people diagnosed with lung cancer will survive 5 years or more, BUT if it’s caught before it spreads, the chance for 5-year survival improves dramatically
