Ebba
i recently approached my oncologist to arrange a neeedle biopsy to get molecular profiles of my nsclc. He told me the lung tumors were too small to to get a worthwhile sample. I then inquired about blood biopsies and got a similar response, namely that the blood often doesn't carry enough cancer volume to return a viable profile. Anyone have advice? Should I try a blood biopsy anyway. After two years of treatment, I still don't have biomarkers. Thanks Ebba
KatieB
HI Ebba, I don't disagree with your oncologist about the blood biopsies- is it still worth trying ? That's a decision you need to make. Some patients will do the blood biopsy because they are at a pivotal decision point in their treatment or they may be out of standard treatment options and want to know if targeted treatments will be of benefit to them. I suggest connecting with Foundation Medicine or a similar company to explore the options that may be available to you. http://www.mycancerisunique.com/ Please keep us posted on you. KatieB
HI Myra, this article may help. http://www.dana-farber.org/Newsroom/News-Releases/liquid-biopsy-blood-test-accurately-detects-key-genetic-mutation-in-most-common-form-of-ung-cancer-study-finds.aspx About 80% accurate at some markers- but still very new and sometimes not covered by insurance. Worth asking your doctor about.
