Kathryn Trawick
My husband had the tumor removed on November 28th, so almost a month ago! The nerve pain is terrible. The surgeon took 2 nerves, along with partial upper left lobe and 2 ribs. We are just wondering how other people felt post surgery and what to wxpext?? BridgetO
Hi Kathryn and welcome, I'm sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis and his pain. There is at least one person on these forums who's had a pancoast tumor removed. I think it's Donna? I expect she'll see your post and respond. Hang in there! Guest Rob676
POST SURGERY SUCKS!!!! Had my pancoast removed nov 29th this year from the right upper lobe. I did not have the vats. The pain I am having is near the bottom of my sternum off to the right a little. it's a really bad burning pain when i cough and a steady pain otherwise. The Dr said it was nerve pain. then there's the incision pain and pain from where the Dr. dug around moving things inside of me to get to the tumor thats getting better. Thanks to modern pain pills it it somewhat tolerable. My Dr. said he removed the top rib but put it back. My breathing was not a issue before the surgery but is now and the dr said it was from the radiation treatments that were not aimed to good and hit my left lung also causing breathing issues that are supposed to go away after time. After the surgery my Dr. gave me 3 months off of work which I hope to go back early as I dont think it is necessary.
Donna G
Hello Kathryn. As Bridget said above , I had a Pancoast tumor removed. I had chemo and radiation before I had surgery. The pain I had from the tumor pressing on those nerves and my chest wall was reason that took me to the Doctor and got me diagnosed. When I was able to have the old open chest surgery in the spring of 1998 it was very painful I think because it is a difficult area to get to, they really had to spread my ribs, and muscles to get there. It took a while to get over ! After I had to have more chemo as had been the original plan. They never removed my ribs but they never healed ( they are still broken ) It was worth it ! I am officially a 21 year survivor ! Please keep us posted, Donna G
