TBone Posted May 2, 2004 Posted May 2, 2004 Hi everybody, I imagine you all get tired of hearing about my pain but I am really confused now.I celebrated being pain-free too early. It was only after my second radiation treatment when the pain disappeared and although something told me it was too early the fact that I went 36 hours pain-free just had me all excited.Well the pain has come back with a vengeance.I had my 5th treatment on Friday and I think the pain is worse this morning than it ever has been.Does anybody have any idea what is going on here?I sure would appreciate any input. The doctor said that if it worked it would take 5 or 6 treatments probably.I just can't figure why the pain completely left for 36 hours.Praying for us all.TBone Quote
ginnyde Posted May 2, 2004 Posted May 2, 2004 Oh Tbone, I have no idea, I really wish I could help you. Just wanted to let you know that I am praying that you get some long term relief from this pain. Ginny Quote
Angie Daughter of Bill Posted May 2, 2004 Posted May 2, 2004 Sorry I don't have any answers for you. I just wanted you to know that I am thinking about you and praying for you as well. I so hope that your pain will disappear as quickly as it returned. Angie Quote
Ry Posted May 2, 2004 Posted May 2, 2004 Oh T I am sorry to hear the pain is back. My only suggestion is to see if there is a pain clinic at the hospital and get a refferal. Pain is what they do, maybe they can give you some relief. Ry Quote
Jerrye Posted May 2, 2004 Posted May 2, 2004 Tbone, The same thing happened to me when my pelvic bone was radiated. The radiation onc said that the good tissue was swelling and causing the pain. He prescribed dexamethasone. It helped tremendously, but only time completely took the pain away. Good luck Jerrye Quote
gerbil runner Posted May 2, 2004 Posted May 2, 2004 I'm sory the pain is back. I second the idea for the pain clinic. Praying you feel better soon. Quote
KC Posted May 2, 2004 Posted May 2, 2004 TBone, I am so sorry to hear the pain is back. The same thing happened to my father. He woke up the morning of the day he was going for his last radiation treatment and felt great, no pain, for the first time in a month. After he received that treatment, the pain came back with a vengence too. I don't know why this happened. I tried to do research on it, but couldn't come up with much. I just know that sometimes the radiation will cause aggravation to the surrounding healthy tissue and maybe that is why the pain is back. I hope and pray that it goes away again and for good. Please try to hang in there, I do know how tough it is and I am so sorry you have to go through this. Praying hard that the pain disappears soon. P.S. Have you asked your dr. for liquid morphine? It might help when the traditional pain meds seem to not be working anymore. Also, they tend to start off with the lowest dosage of pain medication until you tell them exactly how painful it is and insist on stronger stuff. Quote
Connie B Posted May 2, 2004 Posted May 2, 2004 Dear T-bone, I'm sorry to hear your nasty pain came back. I honestly had hope that your treatments where on there way to working. I only WISH I had an answer for you that would work to take your pain away. The best I can offer you is to continue to keep you in my prayers in hopes that this pain will once again leave you alone!!! (((((((((((T-Bone))))))))))))) The other thing that comes to mind is (DAMN-IT, LEAVE Our T-bone alone PAIN!!! ) Sure hope and pray your pain goes away! Quote
dave s Posted May 2, 2004 Posted May 2, 2004 Pain can be caused by different things. Any treatment that actually kills cancer cells will cause pain if the tumor load is large enough and the tumor kill rate is fast enough. As the cells die they release toxins into the body which cause pain. Eventually they are cleaned up and the pain disappears. So pain is not necessarily always a bad thing. I had significant pain after treatment which later was shown to have resulted in complete remission. I'm on a different therapy now since my progression and this time I welcome the pain. Dave S Quote
DeanCarl Posted May 2, 2004 Posted May 2, 2004 Tbone, No real answers for you but hoping the pain doesn't stick around. In another of your threads you posted the bone scan showed some possible problems in the lumbar spine area. If there are problems in that area and it's affecting the nerves that tarvel through that area it could be causing the pain. I'd ask your docs about that if I were you. Dean Quote
MO_Sugar Posted May 2, 2004 Posted May 2, 2004 I am so sorry the pain has returned. Let's hope it is just a momentary set back. God Bless, MO Quote
Lisa O Posted May 2, 2004 Posted May 2, 2004 I have no answers.... I am so sorry that your pain is back. This just stinks! Quote
TAnn Posted May 2, 2004 Posted May 2, 2004 T-Bone, I am so sorry to hear that your pain is back. I am hoping and praying that your doctors can figure out the cause and come up with a solution. I, too have been plagued with pain since having the Denver Catheter put in, and my doctors also cannot determine what is causing the pain. Oxycontin did nothing for the pain, only made me feel like sleeping all day. Good luck and keep us posted! TAnn Quote
stand4hope Posted May 2, 2004 Posted May 2, 2004 TBone, I was thinking the same thing Dean wrote. Is the pain down the outside of your leg and kind of radiates out from there? If you have problems in the lumbar spine area, that can definitely cause severe leg pain because of the pressure on the nerves. I ditto everyone else's thoughts, too, that I am so sorry the pain has come back. I'm praying that you will get some answers tomorrow. God bless you, Peggy Quote
SandyS Posted May 2, 2004 Posted May 2, 2004 T-bone - We never get tired of you "complaining"! We all do it! Sorry that the rollercoaster is in a "dip", but just hang on to the bars...you'll probably be going uphill again soon! Hugs and prayers, SandyS Quote
Fall54 Posted May 2, 2004 Posted May 2, 2004 Dear T Bone, I, too am so sad that your pain has returned and I also hope that some of these posts answers your questions. Maybe it is a good sign???? I know thats hard to believe when you hurt like you do. I was always told there is no reason for you to go through pain and that the DR's could give you something to ease it. I hope that is true. I am praying for you as well as everyone here and there is power in numbers. God Bless you T. Quote
DaveGr Posted May 2, 2004 Posted May 2, 2004 Check with your onc about pain medication, or get a referral to the pain clinic. Most hospitals have pain clinics now. There is no reason for you to be living in and with pain when they can do something about it. My ribs still bother me from my surgery in Oct 2001 and Sept 2002. My onc has me on oxcontin and oxcodone, which help a lot. The only problem I have had with taking those meds, is that I didn't realize I had an ingrown toe nailuntil I noticed it was all red and puffy. I couldn't feel the pain. The foot doctor asked me if he could cut on it without giving me a local pain killer. I asked him what he has been sniffing. Sorry about the "rotten"humor. I hope laughing doesn't cause you anymore pain. Quote
tess Posted May 3, 2004 Posted May 3, 2004 We were told the pain would be from the swelling of the radiated area. It should get better soon...(IHOPE!) Hang in there, T-Bone. The steroids would help the Dextra whatever it is... Sending prayers for you too, my husband hurt so bad, he just finished his radiation to his #6 right rib, it took a couple weeks, but he's much better now.. Tess Quote
close to the edge Posted May 3, 2004 Posted May 3, 2004 so sorry to hear of your pain. I can somewhat relate. after my surgery I had such excruciating pain, only trouble was the docs didnt listen and said "oh thats so Rair" sent me home but i only returned 5 hrs later with worse pain couldnt speak let alone cry I pray this gets sorted out for you sooner than later. I was not pain free for 10 weeks after my surgery. sure it got better but it was that nagging pain that never went away. every day I would cry & pray for it to go away. One thing that did help was I went to see a pain management specialist about 3 weeks after surgery. She has been a tremendous help. ask your anesteseologist (sp) if they can recomend someone. when it comes to pain you'll try anything for releif good luck..............ann Quote
Guest Phyllis Posted May 3, 2004 Posted May 3, 2004 I for one am glad you post about symptoms. I learn a lot from reading the responses. You might be like me. When I start to feel good, I tend to do a lot of physical work and end up feeling like h----. My nurse would tell me to take it easy for a while and I would feel better. I also agree with Dave S. that I welcome some pain since I think it means that maybe the drugs are working. Some of my best CT scans have been when I have felt like h____. Of course when I did radiation I had stuff like coughing up blood, etc. all due to the side effects of radiation. When I complained about my shoulder pain the docs said that would not be caused by the tumors, but as soon as I started chemo the pain went away since I figure the tumor pressing on my nerve shrank some. Good luck. Quote
mhutch1366 Posted May 3, 2004 Posted May 3, 2004 T-Bone, So sorry you're in pain again. Could very well be inflammation, expecially if it's near the spine and the tissue around the nerve is compressed. I take vioxx and morphine for pain. Ask at the pain clinic -- that's why they're there. Prayers for the pain to disappear for good, my friend. XOXOXOXOX MaryAnn Quote
jamie Posted May 3, 2004 Posted May 3, 2004 Sorry to hear that it is back, I just read your post last week and was glad to hear that it was gone. Sorry that I dont have any answers, but the pain clinic seems like a really good idea. P.S. Keep complaining... this is the place to do it because what may seem like complaining to you might be helpful information to someone who is going through the same.... I hope you get some relief soon, and start feeling as good as you were... or even better! Quote
john Posted May 3, 2004 Posted May 3, 2004 Hope the pain subsides. Have the Drs made sure there are no blood clots in the legs and also has a mri of the spine been done. Some times I have read that radiation can cause spinal cord compression I'm not a Dr, but maybe you could ask about this Hopefully the pain goes away soon Quote
Nushka Posted May 4, 2004 Posted May 4, 2004 Aww T, so sorry to hear you are in pain again. I , like you, was hoping it was gone. I hope some of the others are right about the swelling from the radiation...that would mean you will get much better soon. I agree about the pain clinic. Always thinking about you and praying we all beat this beast. Nina Quote
