daggiesmom
Does anyone know if we would be" no longer eligible" to donate blood/organs do to having had chemotherapy? Is there any time frame (like a few years?) or are we permanently on the no donor list? I used to be a regular blood donor. Just wondering. mhutch1366
Joanie, I was surprised to find that donation I think is possible after the 5 year mark when they consider one "cured" provided one meets the other requirements, like being medication -free. Check the American Red Cross site. XOXOX MaryAnn
kimblanchard
Becky was not able to donate any organs because of her cancer, but we were able to harvest the tumor for use in one of the clinical trials where they create vaccines from tumors. You may want to look into that, though it hopefully will never come up. Curtis
jamie
Joanie, I could have sworn that I read a post about donation sometime last week. I looked but couldnt find it...maybe if you search around a bit... Jamie
Elaine
I was under the impression that since cancer cells often travel through the blood that a cancer patient can never donate blood. I think Budd posted this last week. However, she was able to donate her husband's retina. Elaine
Budd
Yes we were able to donate Chris' eyes and some tissue. I never brought it up to the dr's because I thought with the cancer, chemo, etc. he couldn't have done it. Chris passed away at 3 in the afternoon. I received a call from the New England Organ Donor Bank, that the hospital had called them. The hospital had checked and his eyes were transplantable. When that transplant team came, they noticed that there was tissue that was usable. So they called in that transplant team. I had given permission for them to take whatever they could use. We were asked if we wanted to know who Chris' eyes went to and we said no, it was enough to know that those baby blues would be helping someone.
