Writing your reps isn't hard. Just go to http://capwiz.com/laf/home/ for info on your rep. All you have to do is insert your zip code. Then write a short note, just ask them to come by.

If you're short on time, copy and paste this, print it and send it off. It will only take a minute. I do suggest you improve the wording.

The Honorable

Dear Senator,

Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in both men and women in the United States. I am inviting you to visit our lung cancer support group. http://www.lchelp.com. Please come & see the pain these people are undergoing because lung cancer research is so underfunded and because of negative remarks and actions from others, including doctors, who appear to believe they caused their own cancer.

We need your help, all 1400 of us.

We would love to have you drop by. Please check the schedule of our chat nights on the main page. These are interactive chats and your participation would be so welcome. Thank you."

Copy and paste. Please. Thanks to everyone here.

We are going to do it! We are going to make a difference!

Dear [recipient name was inserted here],

As a constituent and cancer survivorship advocate, I am writing this

letter to ask you to co-sponsor the Cancer Survivorship Research and

Quality of Life Act (H.R. 2986/S. 1496). This bipartisan bill was

introduced in the House by Representatives Roger Wicker, Steny Hoyer, Roy

Blunt and Lois Capps and in the Senate by Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison,

Edward Kennedy, Dianne Feinstein and Tom Harkin.

The Cancer Survivorship Research and Quality of Life Act will expand and

coordinate research at the National Institutes of Health to include issues

affecting cancer survivors. The bill also expands the ongoing work at the

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with respect to programs on

cancer to include a survivorship component. This important legislation

will provide much needed resources to fund programs and research that will

dramatically improve the quality of life for cancer survivors.

The majority of Americans have been personally touched by cancer.

Today, 75% of American families have faced the uphill struggle of a cancer

diagnosis. In 2002, over half a million Americans lost that difficult

battle, which translates to more than one fatality each minute. The annual

cost of cancer through direct and indirect spending totals more than $180

billion, but in 2001 the government spent only $38 million of that money

on supporting those who managed to survive the disease. This figure

measures out to slightly over 2% of the total budget. This ratio is a far

cry away from where it needs to be.

Cancer survivors cover every demographic. Older Americans represent 60

percent of all cancer survivors, and 77 percent of children diagnosed with

cancer today will be alive in five years. Parents, grandparents, and

children are all affected by this disease, and are in need not only of

treatment, but of assistance to recover from the physical, economic,

psychological, and medical effects of that treatment. It is predicted that

over half of all people diagnosed with cancer in the United States will

survive. This translates to roughly 800,000 American cancer survivors in

the year 2004 alone. This growing number highlights the need for

expanding post cancer treatment to parallel the increasing number of

cancer survivors in desperate need of care. I hope you will cosponsor the

Cancer Survivorship Research and Quality of Life Act (H.R. 2986/S. 1496)

to help prepare those affected by cancer to face the challenges that lie

ahead.

Sincerely,

Jane Rejda

Dear [recipient name was inserted here],

As a cancer survivorship advocate and your constituent, I am writing to

urge you to cosponsor S.1899, the National Cancer Act.

This legislation, introduced by Senators Sam Brownback and Judd Gregg,

codifies the Office of Cancer Survivorship within the National Cancer

Institute. The National Cancer Act authorizes the Department of Health

and Human Services to award grants to eligible entities to educate cancer

patients and their families about medical techniques to reduce and prevent

pain, survivorship care and related community resources. The bill also

amends federal law to emphasize the importance of pain and symptom

management throughout the nation’s cancer programs.

This year in the United States, more than 1.3 million people will be

diagnosed with cancer and the disease will kill nearly 600,000 Americans.

The majority of Americans have been personally touched by cancer.

Due to advances in cancer detection, screening, early diagnosis, and more

effective treatments, there are nearly 10 million cancer survivors across

the country today. In a recent survey, Americans identified cancer among

their greatest fears and as one of the most important issues facing our

nation.

I hope you will cosponsor the National Cancer Act (S.1899) to dramatically

improve the quality of life for cancer survivors.

Sincerely,

Jane Rejda

Great! That reminds me I'll also write Senator Bill Nelson. He used to be the Insurance Commissioner for Florida.
