I'll share the response I got

I'll share the response I got a few months back. I just keep writing and I just keep trying.

Dear Mrs. Brown,

Thank you for expressing your support for increased funding for lung

cancer. I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.

As you may know, the funding for lung cancer research comes from the

National Institute of Health (NIH). In February 2003, I supported an

increase in NIH funding by $3.8 billion, for a total funding level of

$27.1 billion - the largest program increase in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2003

Consolidated Omnibus Appropriations bill. This increase keeps with the

commitment that has been made by the President and Congress to double

the NIH budget between fiscal years 1998 and 2003.

The U.S. House of Representatives recently approved H.R. 2660, The

Fiscal Year (FY) 2004 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education

Appropriations bill, which provides $4.77 billion for the National Cancer

Institute (NCI), a division of NIH that conducts cancer research. This

amount is $178.2 million above the FY 2003 comparable level and the same

as President Bush's FY 2004 budget request. The U.S. Senate approved

the same level of funding for FY 2004 in the House bill's Senate

companion, S. 1356. The NIH is a part of the U.S. Department of Health and

Human Services. Currently, a conference committee is working out

differences between the two bills.

Lung cancer causes more fatalities than any other type cancer, claiming

the lives of over 154,000 Americans in 2002. Further, lung cancer

costs American taxpayers billions of dollars per year. Because this

disease will continue to impact millions of Americans, it is critical that

NIH has the resources to conduct important research into heart disease

treatment and prevention.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me. I appreciate

having the opportunity to represent you in the U.S. House of

Representatives. Please feel free to visit my website (www.house.gov/burgess) or

contact me with any future concerns.

..at least it's within this century...

Ya know, I wonder if anyone besides the letter writer actually reads what is written, those horrible, horrible statistics that they keep playing back for those with an "interest" - do they READ them? Do they truly know what they are putting out there?

It seems anyone with a specific interest would be above receiving this particular form letter, maybe one that didn't preach the evils of the disease, but specifics in what is being done to aid the battle...

Ya know?
