  1. We took my mom for the tap this morning and it went well. She did say she was short of breath this morning though so I talked her into swinging by my hospital for an oxygen test. I had one of my co-workers draw a blood gas, and her oxygen was very low, so oxygen went on, and we took a trip to ER. Her CXR showed imflammation near her tumor, which may be blocking a bronchial tube, so she was admitted to hospital for oxygen therapy. Glad we caught it when we did, but it is just one more thing added to her fluid problem. My dad is much more happy and secure though, he has been having a tough time this last little while. Hopefully, they'll both get rest and get stronger.

    Thanks for being there guys,

  2. Hi guys, well tomorrow my mom is going to have the fluid in her abdomen tapped, so that they can send it off for cytology to find out what the fluid is and what is causing it. Her chest Ct was good, there was even more shrinkage in the tumor and only one lymph node still appears, but is small. Her upper abdomen was clear of malignancies. They don't know what this fluid means. She still is really tired and needs to take her anti-nausea drugs. Hasn't really been up and about much in the last few weeks. Please send your thoughts and prayers our way tomorrow as she undergoes this procedure, and we await the results. (May take up to two weeks) Hopefully, it will be something that can be resolved with drugs or something.

    Thanks,

  3. Deanna,

Congrats. What wonderful news for you and your mom. Our oncologist said the same thing to us (rarely goes away completely), but we have seen different here on this board!

    Best wishes for continued success!

  4. Mom's head CT was clear :D:D We are so relieved! We'll have to wait until Monday, for the chest ct results, but I have good feelings about that one too.

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers. Keep them coming!

  5. Hi Karen,

Thanks for the reply. My mom finished her chemo back in Dec and did really well until Feb. She doesn't have diarrhea with the flushing, and I understand that is usual with carcinoid syndrom, but they are testing just to be sure. Her electrolytes were fine, so they ruled out dehydration. In fact they only gave her 300 ml of iv fluid. I did read yours and Teet's posts on carcinoid.

  6. We ended up taking mom to the ER yesterday. She has been getting more and more of those "episoides". She would wake up in the early am, feeling flushed, headache and nausea would come on. The docs aren't sure what is causing this. We tested for low blood sugar, that wasn't it. The last few days, mom thought her abdomen was getting a bit larger. The ER doc thinks there might be some fluid there. Her blood work and liver enzemes came back good. She will be going for an abdomenal ultrasound early this week. Also, she has a brain scan scheduled for tues, and the chest/abd CT the following week. I'm trying to get that one moved up.

They are also doing a urine test for 5HIAA.

Please send lots of prayers our way. Thanks

  7. Hi Minnie,

What anti-nausea drugs is your mom on? My mom did best with Kytril(like Zofran) and dexamethasone twice a day (usu 9 am and 9 pm) and then used maxeran every 4 hours inbetween if needed. Her doc said she could also add gravol if needed. If she continues to vomit ( and can't keep anything down) you may need something like a gravol suppository.

My Mom also got the lump feeling in her chest. She could really feel it when swallowing. When it was really painful (5th week of radiation) they put her on a narcotic. (liquid morphine at first, then when she was having trouble swallowing, the fentanyl patch). They also gave her a mixture called pink lady to drink, which had an antacid (maalox) and freezing med (xylocaine) in it. She still feels that lump at certain times, and what seems to help is taking aloe vera juice in the morning.

    Hope that helps,

  8. Hi Kathy,

Yes, decadron also helps with allergic reactions, it is a steroid and therefore will help with inflammation. Recently, it has been shown to help with nausea. In the O.R. we use it preventatively to help with post-op nausea. In combo with drugs like zofran or kytril (that's the one my mom is on) it has been shown to help as well with chemo. My mom received it in the IV with chemo, but she also received oral pills to take with the kytril for 2-3 days after.

    Hope that helps,

    faylene
