Staging Questions

My husband has been diagnosed with Stage IV T2N1M1 nsclc. The reason that I can determine for the M1 is that is has metastisized into the same lung. It does not appear that he has distant mets. which is what I understand Ml means. Our Onc. says he may be stage IIIb if the CAT scan that showed additional shadows that are not malignent. I'm confused. If Stage IIIB they can apparently give radiation in additon to Chemo. Would appreciate anyone with similar stages to reply. Thanks, Cheryl
