Recommendations for marketing approval by the agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use are normally endorsed by the European Commission within a couple of months. Avastin is the first in a class of drugs that seek to starve tumours of their blood and nutrients. It had global sales of about $2.5 billion in 2006 and Roche and U.S. partner Genentech Inc. (DNA.N: Quote, Profile, Research) hope expanded uses will boost the franchise. Avastin has already been approved in lung cancer in the United States.
