  2. My mother breathed her last, Monday morning June 27th around 6:00 a.m. She gave cancer the fight of her life and she made me proud to be her daughter.

Thanks to all who offered support, advice and encouraging words.

  3. When I posted my reply I should not have used the word blame. It can sound, when taken out of context, harsh. My apoligies.

The point that I am trying to make (in my opinion) that we as a free society must take resposibility for our own choices. When people choose to bake in the sun and tanning beds and then get skin cancer, who's fault is it? Those who get aids after engaging in promiscuity are they responsible for their behavior? What about the alcoholic who gets behind the wheel of a car loaded, kills himself and somebody's family member? The list goes on and on. These are all personal choices.

I do believe that tobacco companies have been deceptive, especially years ago when our parents and grandparents smoked, but just like the examples I listed above, you would have to live in a cave not to be aware of the dangers in engaging in risky behavior.

I do realize that this is a support forum and it does not help those who are suffering with lung cancer to criticize them. My post is not directed toward them it is simply a response to Las' topic.

    In closing,

If every smoker quit tomorrow would there still be lung cancer? Yes, but how many fewer cases?

No matter how much money is spent on smoking-cessation, there is no law against smoking. No one can be forced to quit, it must come from within ourselves. We our priviliged to live in a free society, but along with that freedom comes responsibility.

Now, for those who wish to, blast away.

    Laura

  4. After reading all these posts, I just don't understand how some people want to blame lung cancer on cigarette smoking when it comes to holding the big tobacco companys accountable, but then turn around and say it isn't really about the cigarettes. How can you have it both ways?

I am not defending tobacco companies, it just seems like people are afraid to put blame where it is due, and that ultimatly it come down to the person choosing to pick up a cigarette and smoke it. I believe that is what Las was trying to say.

In case you were wondering, I AM a former smoker and when I smoked with my girlfriends as a teenager we would laugh and refer to our cigarettes as "cancer sticks".

  6. How can anyone say how anyone other than themself would want to live? You may think that Christopher Reeve's life was not worth living, but he must have thought it was. What about the woman who's face and hands were burnt completley off from a terrible car accident. She said she is happy to be alive. The only person who says that Terri does not want to live is her husband , who by the way already has a relationship with another women whom he has fathered two children with. In addition, there is in question how Terri's present state came about. Some speculate that her "husband" was abusive and he did this to her. It does seem odd that he wants her body cremated immediatly upon her death and will not allow any autopsy or any post-mortem testing. The bottom line is that there is nothing in writing that states Terri would not want to be deprived of nourishment. The last time I checked it is punishable by law to deprive an ANIMAL of food and water. Pease don't start talking about God's will, a new born baby would die when brought home if not for human intervention in providing nourishment.

  7. Bill,

One important thing to know is that there are different size port-a-caths.

Believe it or not the surgeon who installed my mother's port, installed the wrong size. This was actually her second port and we are certain that we explained that the port was going to by used for drawing blood, IV fluids and possibly future chemo. The first time an attempt was made to access the port (for blood tests) the nurse could not get a return. After this happened a couple more times a port dye study was ordered to determine if the port was functioning properly and it was- for infusion but not aspiration. When we went back to the surgeon and questioned him on this, his response was that he did not realize that it was to be used to draw blood or he would have put in a larger port. I was so mad I could spit. Now we are faced with the possibility of having to get yet a third port. Just make sure that the Doctor installing the port understands exactly what the port is going to be used for.

  8. As you can read in my signature, my mother is a stage 4 NSCLC patient, however this is not her first battle with this disease.

I have been reluctant to share this "story" for various reasons, but mostly because the incredible amount of guilt I feel for not being more more vigilant regarding my mother's history of disease.

In 1992 I was 31 and living about 100 miles away from my mother when it was discovered that she had lung cancer. Back then, I was all about myself and my life with my husband and three year old daughter. Mom assured me that the cancer was early stage and contained in the right upper lobe. Mom immediately quit her pack a day 30+ years smoking habit. She underwent a lobectomy and was told no further treatment was needed. She even quoted the surgeon as saying "you'll never have to worry about cancer again!" At the time I thought that sounded strange, after all none of us is immune to cancer, however I thought it best not to question her when she seemed so relieved and happy.

Over the next few years I really didn't think much about the cancer although in the back of my mind I often wondered if Mom worried that it might come back. There were times I thought, should I ask mom if she is getting checked or screened for recurrence but I really was afraid to sound pessimistic. After 10 years had passed I felt safe to say that I had no worries about the cancer.

When I received that dreadful phone call from my father in November of 2003 I was devastated. How could this be happening? The rest of the story is there in the signature.

Things are different now though. Mom is not going to be "cured". But I have not made the mistake of before by not getting involved. I have posted in the past about my strong feelings regarding caregivers and advocates, my mother's story is the reason why. Had I been more involved in 1992 maybe my mother would have gotten yearly CTs, chest xrays whatever, it would have been better than nothing. I know that "what ifs" mean nothing now, but I can't help but feel that I and the rest of my family had our heads in the sand.

  9. Hi,

Thanks to all for the responses.

Reily, yes mom is taking Warfarin(Coumadin) for the blood clot. The Marinol seems to be making her feel better, though it's hard tell when she feels bad because she never complains.

Snowflake, funny that you should mention Cheetos. I was going to the store yesterday and I asked Mom if I could get her anything and she said she would like some Cheetos. I couldn't believe it! That is too funny.

The Marinol is quite expensive, a twenty five day supply was about $460.00. I thought I should mention this for anyone who might be following this post.

    Thanks again,

    Laura

  10. My mother is now taking Marinol to stimulate her appetite and it appears to be effective. She started on Monday at 5mg a day and was increased to 10mg Wednesday evening. While she has not starting eating huge portions of food, she now can eat small meals without getting nauseous. I am so happy about this! Mom's Oncologist said that usually one out of five patients will see improvement so I am feeling so blessed and thankful. One of my worst fears has always been that she would stop eating. A special thank you to Snowflake for her suggestion.

    Laura

  11. Hey Snowflake,

Sorry, I'm pretty bad about following up on my posts. To answer your question, yes my mother is now on 5mg.(started out with 2.5mg.) of the Marinol. After researching it on the net, talking to a Pharmacist and finally her Onc. we decided to give it a try. So far she is into day three and I can't really see too much of a difference in her appetite. I am still hoping it will help. Thank you so much for the info.

    Laura

  12. Dear Margaret,

I think there are many, many people here who can feel your pain and your joy. When I say joy I mean that there is something special between those who are so close to the person who is suffering. Joy because you savor the time left, joy because you have a chance to say goodbye, joy because you learn what it really means to give of youself completely and ask nothing in return.

My mother is loosing her battle, she knows it and I know it. She has time to make plans, this is good for her. I asked her the other day if she had her choice of knowing in advance that her life was ending(as in her case) or to not know by some unfortunate event that would end her life without warning, with no hesitation she said she would want to know. "I have time to get ready" she said.

There comes a time when one has to make peace with one's situation and accept what the future holds. I believe when that time comes for each of us we know it. It sounds as if you are at peace.

  13. When I first discovered this site I was really surprised at how many members don't reveal the States or Citys in which they live. I think it could be helpful for the newcomers, or those seeking second opinions, to gain information about hospitals and doctors in their area.

    Just a thought.

    Laura

  14. Does anyone know of anything other than Magestrol or Megace that is used to help with appetite stimulation. My mother is down to 109 and is withering away. Due to other complications, my mother cannot use the two medications I mentioned. Bulking up her diet does not help at this point, as she has no desire to eat.

    Please help.

    Laura

  15. There are opinionated members here. I got a PM from a regular user of this board calling me a "capricious little bi***".

People do and say things that are unexpected. I am not going to deprive myself of the knowledge and support I gain from this site because of one person's actions, nor should anyone else.
