  4. Hello Christymike:

    GOD makes that decision for all of us. not the doc. :x:x Yes, they can quote the statistics, but ya know what?? :shock: screw the statistics, theres always hope. If your chances are 1 in 1000, whos to say your not gonna be that 1. If your not comfortable with your doc then you can always get another and I would certainly get a second opinion. After all, whats there to lose! Sorry, if I'm a bit blunt, but I get annoyed when I hear something like that.

    God bless and you and your dad will be in my prayers

  5. Hello Marcia;

    First, a great big CONGRATS. on the pathology report, that sure helps to take the load off. :D:D:D ;

    I pretty much went through the same thing your going through with the pain meds., I took over the counter stuff to help with both the constipation and nausa, although the nausa wasn't too bad. I took pepsid or Zantac for it and drank Metamucil at night for the constpation. I weened myself off the pain meds at about 5 to 6 weeks ( had a pneumonectomy ) and like you replaced them with Advil and Tylenol. :) At 8 weeks with the OK from my doc. I took off for the Jungles of Costa Rica ( family pic. ), the only other issue I had was bladder control :?:? , it seems that when I exert myself I have to pee, go figure?? :?:? It was a bit of a pain in Costa Rica, I did alot of peeing in the rainforests :shock::shock: People were very understanding,

    God bless, stay well and it will certainly get better.

  10. Hey Bruce; Welcome to wonderful world of 1 lungers, :):):) ; gotta be grateful cause it could a been worse. They took mine on May 2, 2001, along with 18 nodes. I didn't need any chemo or radiation only follow-ups and was told pretty much the same thing you were.

    I was told that they got it all ( squamous type by the way), and that I was cancer free, however, :? I was also told that there are no guarantee's, and that microscopic cells could still be in my body and that I would have to be closely watched. There always seems to be a " HOWEVER " with cancer. :x

    Anyway, my follow-ups were ct scans of the chest, abdomen and brain every 3 to 4 months for the first 2 years. every 6 months now. :)

    Seems that your recovery sounds similar to mine, shortness of breath and pain / soreness in the back. The shortness of breath will get better but it takes time. I still have problems climbing stairs and when I exert myself. But, ya gotta keep pushing, the more exercise the better. By the way, the family pic is 8 weeks after surgery, I was hiking in the rainforests of Costa Rica. Wasn't easy but I was determined. :shock:

    Anyway, lots of exercise and take the pain meds when your suppose to .

    Be well and God bless

  13. Hello Jen, glad your here! :)

    I think your very right in your thinking and I would highly recommend a second opinion. I live a bit north of you in Sussex county. I had my second opinion performed at the Sloan- Kettering facility in Dover, NJ. They were extemely comforting and very professional. I like the fact that my case was reviewed by a team of doctors. I was a bit torn on if I should have gone to Sloan in NYC but their faciclty in Dover worked for me. I was operated on at Morristown Memorial Hospital. Their cancer facility is also state of the art with very experienced doc.'s and the latist in equipment and methods. I also hear that the Robert Wood Johnson cancer center in New Brunswick is excellent but have no experience with it.

    I had a left pneumonectomy performed a bit over 2 years ago and needed no chemo or radiation, ( as of yet anyway ), so I can't help you there. But if you want names of Dr.'s or other info., or even a place to lunch let me know ! In any case your dad will be in my prayers.

    God bless and be well

  15. Hey John, good article, thanks, I had just gotten a note from ACS asking for a letter to be sent to congress on this. Think I'll do it tonight.

    I gotta learn how you do this, ( are you cutting and pasting these articles?) I think I need to pick your brain! :?:?

    God bless -

  16. Hey Dave;

    Good for you, Donna's given you some good ones, I would also include American Cancer Society, and NCI ( National cancer Institute ), - I know they focus more on US. but still good info.

    Sorry, I gotta learn how to cut and paste the html's ( it's on my to do"s ) :?:?

    Also, been doing a bit of letter writing of late, and always make sure I hit on the 5 year survival rate of being a dismal 15%, lowist of all major cancers, and that it's projected that approx. 157,000 people will die of it this year and that 171,000 will be diagnosed. ( again only US figures ); :x:x

    I think we need to forget about the fluff and start making the message direct and to the point. We are Dying, there's too many, it's not acceptable, and yes even someone or thing needs to accountable. :x:x ; SIMPLE BUT RELENTLESS !! if you get my drift, I think Joe Cherner @ smokefree.net does it the best that I've seen. He's like a hammer continually hitting a nail. Check out his site not just for the message but also the methods. OK you can see I'm on a roll! Hope this helps

    I'll be happy to send you some copies of letters if you want., let me know.

    Good luck, I know you'll do great, God bless and don't fall :lol::lol:

  22. Thanks Connie, spent about an hour reading them, I see the war rages in Minnesota. It gets frustrating at times. They talk about rights of bar owners or effects on Philip Morris's stock and we continue to die. :x:x

    It's the same here in Jersey, accept it looks like the tobacco money is mostly all spent. How sad! We now have the highist taxes on cigs. in the nation ( good thing), but have cut spending on tobacco cessation and health issue's to a fraction of what was intended.

    I sent out 3 more letters yesterday via Joe Cherners smokefree web site but sometimes it seems nobody's listening. Just venting a bit, :?:? Looks like my uncle is being dx.'ed with stage IV disease and I'm a bit down. I'll keep - keeping on though., thanks again,

    God bless and be well and yes a big hug to ya!!
