Christmas has come early for female fans of Fylde Rugby Club after 20 of the first team stars got their kit off for charity.

The 2007 Fylde Uncovered Calendar features the first team squad covered up by only a few strategically placed rugby balls.

The idea is the brainchild of Fylde player, Nick King, who joined the club a year ago from Nottingham.

All proceeds from the calendar are to be donated to Cancer Research UK.

Nick, 31, of Smithy Lane, Lytham, said: "It's a charity that is very close to us as my father is ill with lung cancer.

"The idea of doing a calendar to raise money seemed ideal as we have all the ideal resources, such as a group of rugby lads, at the club."

Nick, had little trouble in convincing his team mates to strip for the calendar. He said: "Once I told the lads that it was for charity they were all up for it, even the photographer Allen Markey did all the photos for free and they were really well done."

The calendar, costing £10, will be launched after the Fylde-Orrell game next month.

"The launch night is going to be a great night," says Nick, "We have 500 tickets available and it's going to be a champagne and canape reception.

"We want to sell out the launch and we also have had 2,000 calendars printed so were looking to sell all of them as well and raise quite a bit.

Every month of the calendar has been sponsored by a local business to cut down printing costs."

The launch will take place in the Bill Beaumont bar at Fylde Rugby Club, on Saturday December 2, from 7.30pm till late. Tickets are £5 on 01253 734733. If you are unable to make the launch night but would still like to order a calendar then contact the club on the same number.

l The Blackpool branch of the Womens' Running Network has sold more than 1,000 calendars in aid of the Rosemere Cancer Foundation.

The women, who also stripped off, will be signing copies of their calendar at Waterstones in the Tower Shopping Centre, Blackpool, on Saturday at 1.30pm.
