  1. I smoked 2 packs a day on the average for 35 years. 3 weeks after I quit they told me I had SCLC. I had never really tried to quit over those years but something told me to stop. I thought of all the things with gum, candies, and patches but I didnt want to rely on those. I decided that I needed to make a promise so I promised God that I would quit. Now it has been 3 years come 18 Dec that I have not had a smoke. Each time my mind thinks I need one I think of my promise that I made to God and I feel this comfort come over me knowing that he is giving me faith to keep my promise. That nervous feeling just goes away and I feel that inner feelings of warmth come over me. Good luck and God Bless You.

  2. Bill, I am so sorry for your wife's situation. I also had brain mets but my rad doc sent me to neuro doc who said no to PCI and WBR. He game me the gamma knife and now they cant even find where the cancer was. I have minor short term memory but that is all. I will never understand why PCI and WBR are still used as first option. I hope that God will give you all the strength and faith needed to overvome this situation.

  3. First let me say that this is not a advertisement for anyone just a idea that I had for Christmas.

I am always running short of breath, and sometimes it seems I can almost smell the dust in the air. My wife and I sat down on the computer and did some research on Air Purifiers. Here's what we came up with.

    1. EcoQuest offers a purifier that will cover a 3,000 square foot home. It does some really neat things for the air in your home to breath better. They can be reached at cole@FreePoint.com for more info and they will send a free dvd explaining the positive product information. Toll free number is

    866-437-1369.

    2. Oreck. They have a somewhat similiar purifier but works in a different method. They can be reach at www.oreck.com. It will cover 900 square feet.

    Toll free number 800-289-5888.

Both companies offer up to 90 day free in home use or your money back.

I liked both ideas so much that my wife and I just got both of them and wow what a difference it makes. Finally fresh air in the house without opening windows allowing dust in and the peace of mind that we are helping our lungs.

I am placing this here because I think it will help us to relax and breath better while we are going through all this. And what a great Christmas gift this could be for your parents, a friend or for yourself.

Give it some thought and until next time God Bless all of you, have nothing but great holidays and remember, With God, all things are possible.

PS We even had our carpet shampooed for that great deal of 2 rooms for 29.95 and then end up spending 160. Geezzzzz But the house smells great.

  4. Hi Donna,

Connie is absolutely right. You can only get these answers from his Doctor. It is a shame that we think of all this after we leave the office but if nothing else ask the office people to ask him to call you or maybe see if he will accept email questions. One thing for sure if you cant talk with them after the appointment then change doctors. Right it all down first, make it short and to the point and then right their answers down or tape record them so you can look it up on the internet or relisten to it. Dont give up.

  5. You might want to contact her doctor and ask if she is receiving Decatron with her chemo. Decatron is a steriod that helps with nausea and it gives you a hunger in your belly to eat. What they dont tell you is that it makes some people very very angry and short tempered. Its kinda like road rage. You just blow up. I had all of this because of decatron and it is terrible. Talk to the doctor first and if she is on this, he will back off the amount or can give her something to balance this out. Hope it helps.

  6. Thank you all for the kind words. As far as emotions go both my wife and I started Celexa in the beginning to help with this but mostly we placed our faith in the Lord and let him handle this area. The saddness and the worrying must be channeled to positive emotions as best you can. You must believe each waking minute that the Lord will take care of you regardless of the outcome. Faith is all we have at this point in our life so make it positive. My wife even joked with me that I can't take the credit cards with me to heaven so I stayed to use them here. LOL.

    God Bless

  7. Pammie,

I tried to stay with all diet ice cream and such but to be honest I have been told by several onc's and some lab tech that the sugar was not a big deal but as with anything dont over do it. Another biggee was my onc didnt wait till my cell count went down he started me on Nuelasta and Procrit right in the beginning. I owe so much to him for stepping out and pushing the limits on me.

  8. Please go read what I did to fight sclc. Your mom is taking the same treatment chemo and rad like I did. It is a very aggressive approach by your doctor and thats good. I hate to say this but your mom is gonna feel alot sicker before this is over but she can do it. Follow some of the tips I gave but make sure she drinks those fluids. Get her outside in the sunshine for short periods if you can and rent some funny movies. Good luck and God Bless

  9. This will be long so sit back relax and say I CAN DO THIS:

    1. Had a long talk with the lord of course one sided, he choose not to speak. I explained that this cancer thing was alot bigger than I could handle and ask him to handle it. Said Lord, I know if I die that I will wake up and be in heaven and attend a real big family reuinon and I thought that was great. If I wake up here thats OK too. I have my wife, family, friends, my horses, dogs, cats, and maybe I can help someone else so you handle this. My promise to him was I would always talk to someone everyday about the lord, someone everyday about their cancer (not mine), and I would encourage people to quit smoking like me(3 weeks before I was told I had cancer). Well a friend gave me a coin with a cross on one side and the prayer from Mark on the other that said: With God ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE. Well I carried this coin in my pocket at all times and when I was scared, nervous, or unsure I would rub that coin between my fingers until I remembered that my faith was stronger than the cancer.Today I buy those coins by the box and pass one out everytime I go somewhere. Especially when I go and visit at oncology ward.

    2. I had to realize that I wasnt punished just bad luck. I went to the hospital for radiation and chemo and I would sit in the lobby at Brook Army Medical Center and watch people come in without legs, arms, young kids from Iraq with their faces nose, ears burnt off. And I mean off. They are 19 and 20 and will walk the rest of their life with these marks. Hm can you see my cancer. Nope. So I would make it a habit to sit and talk with them over lunch and let them know that its whats inside that counts and again, the lord will take care of them.

    3. Well after my pity thing was over I began to start a new life, a life with cancer living inside of me. Now you have a choice here: Let the cancer control your life or you control the cancers life. By now you know what I did..

    4. Now here is the plain facts and its so simple.

I raise horses and cattle and I remembered a old saying of mine. Have you ever seen a fat cow die. NOPE. The skinny ones do all the time. So here I am with a fried throat from radiation and cant eat and the doc's want to put a tube in my belly. Hm, again not a chance that this is going to happen so for 4 1/2 months while I couldnt eat solid food I drank 4-5 ice cream shakes a day, bowls and bowls of ice cream, Nestle's milks of banana's, vanilla, 3-4 cans of boost and I went from 165 to 210 during that 4 months. Also and here is a biggie hint, I ate a half watermelon everyday. Has that old vitamin (Lycopene) that doc's are now figuring out that helps fight cancer. Gave me the water I needed also and is a natural stool softner for me and I love ice cream and watermelon so seemed like a wise idea to me. LOL. Boost has many many vitamins in it so that really helps. Now while I am talking about vitamins I asked my onc, if I take vitamins during chemo can you for sure tell me that the vitamins will not help to heal cancer cells like it does good cells. He said and I quote, no, I cant tell you for sure that it will not help cancer cells to come back. Well, Boost is made to help your system with vitamins so that is all I used. After chemo stopped yes then I went on to a multi-vitamin called Miracle 2000 wich just seem to have a good balance but also had high seleium which is good to fight cancer cells. Got it at GNC. During chemo you do not want to eat thin skin fruit. Like apples, grapes, and such. The dirt and pesticides can lay under the skin so if you have to eat them make sure they are cooked. Eat lots of bananas, cantalope, watermelon and thick skinned fruit. All meat should be well done and please eat more fish than red meat. When your counts are down from chemo you can get any infection there is and then some. After I could eat I had plenty of cottage cheese with green olives. Lots of salads, veggies, carrots, and made up for 53 years of not eating veggies LOL my mom loved it.

    5. Drink one gallon of water everyt day. Each time you drink a glass think to yourself I am washing my cancer away. I am washing my cancer away. Positive mind picks up where the oncs leave off. I told myself that Cancer was a temporary inconvience and I believed it.

    6. Lots and lots of green tea. Hot with orange blossom honey in it. Very tasty. Would drop a peppermint or spearmint candy in it now and then. At night I couldnt sleep like most of you so I would have a big cup of sleepy time tea then take my sleeping pill. Well after awhile you condition your body to go hmmmm sleepy time tea , lights out. Got off the sleeping pills that way. Condition your mind and body to work for you not the cancer.

They also have a Lipton Green Tea out now. Its a cold drink that has citrus in it and is very tasty. Remember Green Tea, GOOD.

    7. Your body heals best when you sleep so sleep away. I would get up in the morning so I could go lay on sofa and take a nap. Buy a big screen TV and rent lots and lots of movies. Take care of yourself, make yourself the number one priority in your life for a change. When you get better you can pick up where you left off or maybe change your life altogether.

    8. A pet is always a good caregiver. Will lay with you and give you something in your heart that will comfort you 24/7.

    9. Walking. When you can force yourself to walk and help them muscles. My wife and I would walk miles and miles when I could get up. Better to throw up outside than in the house anyway. By the way, after all this I am not on oxygen either and I believe its cause I walked alot even when it hurt.

Well in closing this is not a commercial, ad or a must do. This is what I did cause I wanted too. I might die from a truck, a horse bucking me off, maybe a heart attack but I WILL NOT DIE FROM CANCER.

    Take care and God Bless,

    Don

Feel free to ask me a question but ask it here where everyone can read it.

  10. It's been awhile since I have posted but am back to let you know that my MRI and PET last week shows that I am cancer free and have been for almost 2 years. From less than 1% chance of living more than a month from SCLC Extensive, with Superior Vena Cava Syndrome, Brain Tumors, Blood Clots, Cellulitus, 3 busted ribs, busted right collor bone am here. Was dx Jan 03. Its a long ,long road but as the wise man in WaterBoy said "YOU CAN DO IT'.

    Suggestions for you:

    1. Do what your doctor says.

    2. Let the Lord handle how and when your gonna leave this world.

    3. Exercise and drink lots of liquids.

    4. Make up your mind to get busy living or get busy dying.

  11. Happy Birthday Tami,

I am just sitting here wondering why your not doing the roller blade now but I cant decide if you should do it at work or wake up your husband roller blade around the house when you get home. Happy spirits to you.

  12. After the carbo and vp 16 my onc said things are really looking good and decided that while the cancer was weak he wanted to kick it more with Topoteacan. Cleaned me up very nicely. I really believe that agressive treatment pays off in the end but you have to really get tough and just know that the end of the treatment is in sight. This next treatment is short term compared to the many years of clean health you are going to have so hang in there.

  13. There is also a thing called Radiation Recall which is what I had several months after my throat healed. I think mine lasted a month or two and I honestly felt like I had just received radiation again. It does not happen very often but it can happen. I also on advice from onc switch to taking both of my aciphex at night just before bed instead of one every 12 hours. Has helped alot since as he explained you can have the reflux without the burning sensation thus leading to sore throat. Has worked for me.

    God Bless

  14. I know of several people that have surived from 5 to 10 years and are still here today. They had extensive sclc. Just like me and I am at the 2 year mark now. Anything is curable so dont give up just keep the faith.

Besides that I want to collect social security someday and get them discounts for meals, planes and trains. Wont be much but I will be tickled about it.

Doc Joe I remember walking into my onc office maybe after he had a hard day or just gave someone some bad news and I would smile at him, pat him on the shoulder and say dont worry doc am gonna make you famous. He would look at me and shake his head but if I cant keep my doctor motivaed then who will. Well today he is in Bagdad healing our soldiers so we send him cans of homemade oatmeal and peanut butter cookies along with tootsie pops and other things. Your not fired until you give up and quit. I placed a note in the last cans that said if hardend then use as frisbees against enemy. His reply back was REAL GOOD AND REAL GONE.

Someone ought to create a take your doctor a batch of cookies day.

    God Bless

  15. Fay A please understand that I was not saying anything to you about your post it was all the post that followed that bothered me. We have a organization(ALCASE) and if we all get behind it we CAN change some of the issues and remember the group that makes the loudest noise is most often heard. Am telling people dont complain do something about it.

    God Bless

  16. Forgot to say that I do everything that I can for ALCASE and Lung Cancer.

I am a phone buddy who talks with a long lists of people about their lung cancer and try and help them.

I talk with caregivers and family of patients and try to give them tips on things to do.

I have started a Lung Cancer Support Group in San Antonio and am starting a new one close to Austin this month.

I speak at churchs at the Wed or Thur night services about lung cancer.

And yes I have a full time job running the ranch and breaking horses.

Now how much time DO YOU HAVE???????

    God Bless

Don www.alcase.org give them a call

  17. Dear Fay A

I was very pleased to read your first 2 paragraphs and then it became a politcal issue. Not meaning all your comments but the comments that followed your post. Seems to me that if people were really concern about fighting lung cancer and wanting more money for it they would join with a orgainzation like ALCASE thats works for lung cancer only. But when I have mentioned ALCASE on here and in the chat rooms I felt like it was not welcome. Well people can go ahead and complain about who is or who is not but lung cancer is here to stay. Organizations like ALCASE need our help. And for those of you that might disagree go ahead and blast me because am fighting cancer not presidents.

God Bless and Keep the Faith

    Don
