  1. Hi Snowflake

Good for you reaching 5 years. I fully understand how you feel as I am approaching 5 years as a prostate cancer survivor and now 2 months as a lung cancer survivor. Inez and I are both thankful for each day that we awake and look into each other's eyes. Keep fighting, keep positive and never, never give up. A positive attitude can help to find a positive result. Continue a wonderful life.

  2. Hi Kelly...In Sept 2007 I was diagnosed with lung cancer as a 1.0CM nodule was found in my upper left lung. After a PT Scan, seeing a pulmonologist who claimed that I was stage 1A and felt that by removing the upper left hand lobe,I had a wonderful chance to beat this disease. On Dec 7, a thoracic surgeon removed my upper left lobe of my lung. The surgeon also removed the lymph nodes and fortunately they were found to be cancer free, so I do not have to take further treatments of any kind. Might mention I am also a 5 year prostate cancer survivor, so do have a little experience. As of today, I am feeling excellent. I go to gym 3 to 4 mornings a week and do approx. 30 to 40 minutes on the treadmill. I still do not do any heavy lifting. I did have a lot of discomfort, but nothing that percocet or sometimes two tylenol could not take care of. I had an excellent surgeon who has done this VAT Laproscopic surgery many, many times. This is very important that you have an experienced surgeon. Also very important is that you maintain a positive attitude through it all. I know how difficult this can be, but you will get through a lot better with an attitude that says you can do this and you will be fine. I spent 5 days in the hospital recuperating. Decided quickly that if the food in the hospital did not kill me, than nothing the doctors could do would. Contacting the wonderful people on this site is a great beginning as their support and the support of my wife, children and friends was the best thing in the world. We will be thinking about and if there is anything else we can say or do that will be of help please let me know. My wife, Inez and I will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. Stay positive, be your own advocate, keep good records and keep fighting and not give up.

  3. Hi Sonya. I live in Glendale Arizona and have just gone through lung cancer treatment. Years ago my brother-in-law was in the same position as you, and he was able to get on a medical program here in Arizona called AHCCCS,ARIZONA HEALTH CARE COST CONTAINMENT PROGRAM.Here is some information that I just found on GOOGLE. Below is the telephone number and once you contact them an AHCCCS eligibility specialist will review your application to find the program or programs that you and your family may qualify for. The eligibility specialist will send it to the right agency or AHCCCS department(s) which will decide your eligibility.

You will receive a phone call or a letter if there is anything else you need to do or send.

Most programs do not need a face-to-face interview if we can contact you by phone.

You can get an application or get help filling it in between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Call (602) 417-5010, then press 1, or call toll free 1-800-528-0142 then press 1.

Where exactly do you live in Arizona? I really do want to add that now is a critical time for you to stay as positive as you can. I realize how difficult this is to do, but it really is important that you do so. Keep in touch with this site as this support group helped me get through the tight spots and will do so for you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

  4. TODAY HAS BEEN A MIXED BAG. VISITED DOCTOR FOR MY FIRST TIME SINCE OPERATION AND SHE FELT I AM DOING VERY WELL, WHICH IS THE GOOD NEWS. THE BAD NEWS IS THAT INEZ'S MOM PASSED AWAY THIS MORNING IN TORONTO CANADA, AND THE DOCTOR WAS NOT TOO HAPPY IF I WENT BACK TO TORONTO WITH INEZ FOR THE FUNERAL. INEZ WANTS ME TO STAY HERE AS SHE IS GOING WITH HER SISTER AND HER HUSBAND ON A QUICK TURNAROUND, SO AGAINST MY BETTER JUDGEMENT THAT IS WHAT WILL HAPPEN.

I AM STILL COUGHING, BUT THE DOCTOR SAID THAT IT SHOULD STOP SOON AND IF NOT I AM TO SEE MY PULMONOLOGIST. AT THE LEAST THE PAIN HAS SUBSIDED AND I DO NOT NEED PERCOCET, THOUGH I DO HAVE A SCRIPT IF NECESSARY. ADVIL SEEMS TO BE WORKING WHEN I NEED IT. WELL, THAT IS THE START OF OUR NEW YEAR. HOPE EVERYONE HAS A GREAT START AND A GREAT YEAR. STAY POSITIVE AND NEVER, NEVER GIVE UP.

  5. Hi Carol...Love the recliner, but am trying to lose weight so will have to be careful. Feeling great today..Even went to movie, saw Charlie Wilson's War. Fantastic movie. Amazed Congress and the Admninistration ever let any of this be shown, as they like to keep everything behind closed doors. Still concerned about shortness of breath as not sure whether it has to do with anemia, enlarged heart of missing lobe, probably all three. Have a great new year Carol and stay as healthy and as positive as possible.

  6. Hi Barb, Ned and everyone else. Had a rough morning but the rest of the day has been pain free. Took a nap in my new recliner for 3 hours....was great. Barb, it does not hurt when I breathe in. I did have a bypass in 1991, so have been going to rehab ever since and have been watching my diet. I will be seeing both my cardiologist and thoracic surgeon again soon. Considering being a prostate cancer survivor, having VAT surgery for lung cancer, along with heart disease, diabetis, anemia and very low tetesterone, and now an enlarged heart, think I am darn lucky that I am doing as well as I am. Was not easy staying positive the last day or so, but Inez and I are doing our very best to be positive and to keep fighting. We are both so fortunate to have such great support that we must keep a positive attitude. All take care and stay well and have a happy and healthy new year. Am off to bed, first than maybe the recliner.

  7. HI WENDY

It is certainly good to know I am not alone. Pain pretty bad this morning for a short time, and now is much better. Interesting, but we just had a Lazy Boy recliner delivered this morning and I slept in it immediately. Both the surgeon and my cardiologist know about the swelling and also the enlarged heart, which is the scariest part to me. The cardiologist has me on diuretics and I have lost approx. 5 pounds. Do not know if anything can be done about the heart. It is probably caused by both my heart disease and anemia. Sounds like I am a mess, but still plodding along. Do not have any other choice but to stay positive and keep fighting, which Inez and I do continually. Thankyou for your input and your caring. Hope you stay well and out of any further pain. Have a happy and healthy new year.

  8. I had the VAT surgery to remove lobe on left lung 12/7 and will not need further treatment for lung cancer which makes me very happy. This said, I am still experiencing pain and am curious as to how long this pain after the surgery lasts. Have been great the last few days, but today not so hot. Am taking pain medication and it does help. Also am having a problem with some ankle swelling and an enlarged heart, but this probably was happening prior to the lung cancer, but I was not too much aware of it. Anyway, in general, other than the pain, I am feeling fairly well. Gotta go. Inez and I wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year. Stay positive and keep fighting.

  9. Welcome to this site Val. You have come to a wonderful and caring site, one which has helped my wife and I get through this past few months. I am one of the fortunate ones in that my cancer was caught at early stage 1a and I am doing quite well. Not certain that without the thoughts and prayers of everyone at this site that Inez and I would come through this as well as we have. We shall always be grateful. Please stay with this group and you will experience the same feeling. As difficult as it seems, please do not give up, keep positive, keep fighting.

  10. Stacey, I wish the bug was not around as Inez and I would have loved to have met you. We can always meet somewhere for lunch. If the need for a surgeon does arise I cannot tell you how much we think of

Dr Mican. She is rare in that she has both bedside manners and is extremely competent in her abilities. Was highly talked about by all the nurses that we met at the hospital. Still have a little discomfort but in general am feeling pretty well. We wish you a very happy and healthy New Year, and do think about lunch or if you are on this side of town give me a call..623 931 0418.

  11. Hi Christine and Wendy...Thankyou for the kind words. Inez and I already feel how blessed we are with the outcome. The pain is getting less each day and our enjoyment and appreciation of life around us is increasing daily. We are still in awe of the support from everyone.Am certain that my Mom, G-d Bless Her, is above helping to direct traffic. Have a wonderful healthy and happy New Year.

  12. Inez and I want to say that I am doing well, not too much discomfort and appear to be learning to breathe all over again. We both fully recoginize the blessing we have received in early detection and the blessing of such wonderful love, caring and support and wish all in the coming New Year the same blessings as we have received this past year. Thankyou all again for being there and please keep fighting, stay positive, be your own advocate and never, never give up.

  13. Welcome Jussi. The bad news is that you are here, but the really great news is that you are now in touch with a very caring and informative support group. I speak from experience as without this group I am not certain that I would be doing as well. Am in 2nd day of recuperation after having left upper lobe removed and so far am doing great. You appear to have a positive attitude which is so so important. Please stay positive, keep fighting, keep informed, be your own advocate and above all never never give up. This advice has helped me and my wife, Inez battle through lung cancer, prostate cancer, heart disease and diabetis with positive results. You will find that the support, love and caring from family, friends and support groups such as this, will keep your spirits lookin upward as it has Inez and I.

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...

It's about learning to dance in the rain

  14. Thankyou all gain. I do intend to stay and hopefully am able to offer the same support that Inez and I have received. Stay positive.

    Live simply. Love generously.

    Care deeply. Speak kindly.

    Leave the rest to God...

  15. I want to mention again how wonderful and competant Dr Camilla Mican, my Thoracic Surgeon was. Prior to going into Thoracic surgery she spent approx. 20 years in children's heart surgury, so as you can see I was getting two for one treatment. She has great bedside manners, is very very caring (came to hospital each day and did not send assistant), took time to answer all our questions and was there at every turn. I am telling you all this because as you know I travel to California to see an ocncologist for my prostate cancer treatment as it is so important to have a competant doctor. If anyone is looking for a good surgeon I would highly recommend her and at same time tell you that we have an exta bedroom in our home that you would be more than welcome to stay while you are here.

Stay positive, Keep fighting, Be your own advocate and never, never give up.

  16. Thankyou you all again. Inez just went to drug store to fill the prescription for pain pills. I may be positive, but I am really positive that I am not a hero and that pain is not something I ever seem to enjoy. Stay positive, keep fighting, never give up, keep your records and be your own advocate.

  17. Inez and I will never find the words to thank all of you for your absolute wonderful caring, support and prayers, except to say THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU. Just got home from the hospital and am blessed to have such a wonderful result as complete recovery. The fact that I was Stage 1A which is the earliest stage of Lung Cancer, and the fact that Dr Lam in Califorinia who is taking care of my prostate cancer suggested a chest xray since I smoked for many years and I listened to him is even more of an amazement. Had a great surgeon who took the upper left lobe of my lung along with the lymph nodes. Sent it all to lab with the result that I no longer need any further treatment. Inez and I are walking on cloud nine, when we think that only 5 or 6 weeks ago I was diagnosed with lung cancer and now it is gone. You have all had a hand in this recovery with your love and support and teaching us to be so positive, never giving up and above all being our own advocate. Inez and I wish you all a very happy and healthy holiday and again, THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU.

  18. Hi Denise..thankyou for your thoughts, support and kind words. Have to admit that as Friday draws closer my positiveness seems to be ebbing just a little bit, but my wonderful wife, Inez, keeps pushing it back. Inez and I wish you well in your treatment and we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. Please stay with this support group because we have been totally astounded at the wonderful caring people that have sent us messages of hope and love. This is what maintains our positive attitude. Am certain you will feel the same. Please take care, do stay positive, keep fighting, be your own advocate and make certain you have a record of each thing that the medical world does to you. Always remember they work for you and not the other way around. This seems to be the same problem we have in Congress and our administration.

  19. CHRISTINE...INEZ AND I ARE RUNNING OUT OF WORDS TO SAY ANY LONGER. WE THANK YOU AND EVERYONE ELSE ON THIS SITE FOR THE CARE, THE THOUGHTS AND THE PRAYERS. WHEN YOU HEAR PEOPLE SAY THIS IS A CRUEL WORLD THEY CERTAINLY ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT THIS GROUP OR MY PROSTATE CANCER SUPPORT GROUP. INEZ AND I HAVE NEVER MET A FINER BUNCH OF HUMAN BEINGS. IF EVERYONE WERE LIKE THIS THERE WOULD NEVER BE ANY WARS OR CRIME. IT WOULD ALL BE A GARDEN OF EDEN. THANKS AGAIN. STAY WELL, POSITIVE, KEEP FIGHTING AND BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE.

  20. Well, the phone just rang and I was told that I will be having the VAT surgery on Pearl Harbor Day, Friday, Dec 7th at the Banner Thunderbird Hospital in Glendale. Now that we have a date and place it surely feels more real. Cannot wait to get it over with as I am sure you all can understand. You know, when it rains it pours. Inez's mom is 95 with alzheimers and in a nursing home in Toronto Canada. We received a call this morning that she now refuses her meds, will not eat and just wants to sleep, and this she is terminal, so now we are expecting that second dreaded phone call. Inez's sister will go there if anything happens soon, as Inez will not leave me to have this operation without her being here. I am one lucky husband. It is a tough situation, but as we always preach you have got to stay tough, you have got to stay positive and fight your way through all of it, which we will do to the best of our abilities. If this is all a test, when do we graduate. Anyway, enough of my babbling, though you will never know how much it helps to write this all down knowing the wonderful support that Inez and I get from all of you. Stay well and will continue to keep all informed. There is still a lot of living yet to do.
