Does anyone know how long it takes to get SS started. I know there is 5 month wait period. I signed up this past week. I only have about 2 months left on my short term at work. My employer is wanting me back part time now. Guess my question is how long will it be before I go hearing something from SS. Thanks for your imput.

Well it takes a while for the check to come through, but you will get back pay. I know for some it seems to go right through, maybe it depends on the state you're in and how busy the office is. It was probably 6-8 weeks before we heard anything. You will get a letter telling you how much you can earn monthly and still be eligible.

Contact your congressman, ask him/her to check on it for you. claims process always go faster when they are involved.

I filed for SSDI in December 2002 after going off work in Nov due to the cancer. I got my first SSDI check in July 2003. You have to be disabled for 6 months, they told me it was because so many people have short term disability & that they didn't want to pay someone who was getting that.. I asked them "What about the people without the short term disabilty" she told me to talk to welfare.

I applyed for ssdi and ssi on nov 12.... i recieved ssi for nov and dec on dec 12 and got approved for ssdi starting in april....but will recieve ssi til then. a smaller check but a God send.....also if you recieve ssi you qualify for medicare and food stamps. I had no help from my employer because I was just part time.

One of the rules for SSDI is that a person must have a disability that is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death. Short term disability is not considered under Social Security. The SSI program if one qualifies is payable upon filing without a waiting period when one is approved. With SSI comes Medicaid not Medicare...

After the waiting period was over. It took (fillimg for SSD) about 6 weeks. The check was in the bank even before I was notified (by mail) from SS. As much as all of us in Taxachusetts like to complain about government here that was pretty darn fast.
