Hi Sandy,
I was a little curious myself. Here is what I've found so far.....
A low WBC may be due to chemotherapy, a viral infection, a toxic reaction, or another process in the bone marrow that is limiting production of normal WBCs. A high WBC count may indicate infection or leukemia. An increased risk of infection occurs once the WBC drops below 1,000 microliters.
White blood cells help to protect your body by fighting bacteria that cause infection. It is important to protect yourself against infection when your white blood cell count is low.
How to recognize an infection
When your white blood cell count is low, you may not have the usual warning signs of an infection, such as pus, redness or swelling. Signs you should watch for may include:
a temperature (fever) over 100 degrees
shaking chills
loose bowels for more than two days
a burning feeling when passing urine
a cough
a sore throat
a general feeling of tiredness or "flu-like" symptoms
If any of these symptoms occur, be sure to notify your nurse or doctor promptly
I hope that Larry will begin to feel better soon.

Pat,
I'm praying that the chemo shrinking the tumors is the culprit here. It just HAS to be that!!!!
I personally think that doctors should SOMEHOW read the scans immediately. Don't they realize what it does to us to make us wait for results??? Especially over a weekend.
Hang in there!
As always, you both are in my prayers.

lol..Kelly
Just writing them down gets ya going huh? Too funny!!
Down to the bone cranky. Hmmmmmmm....
1. Automated phone systems and busy signals!
2. Rude, arrogant people.
3. I can't think of the name of them but the automatic lines at the stores you go through by yourself. I'm stubborn and keep thinking that one of these days I'll get through it much quicker than I would have if I would have stood in the other lines.
I tell myself it will be the LAST time I try it every darn time. ughhhhhhhh

Your reaction to the news is exactly the way I felt too. It is hard to think clearly...but after the initial shock wears down you'll begin to do what you have to do. Please, please, please don't worry about the statistics. It will only bring you down and your Mother needs you to be optimistic. Attitude and frame of mind is so important. Let her know you are there for her and let everything else fall into place.
Please keep us posted.....and remember that we are here when you need us.

Hi Lynne,
What a rough day for you. I have never walked in your shoes, so I have no advice to offer. I do know that all the "firsts" without our loved ones has to be the absolute hardest to get through. I hope you can surround yourself with people that can give you all the support that you need. Whether that be a shoulder to cry on or just someone to listen....and a big hug to let you know that you are not alone and that sometimes we just have to take things day by day to not get so overwhelmed. Take extra special care of yourself today....heck, let he pile sit another day and do something special for yourself. YOU deserve it!!!!
PS I really liked the poem...thank you for sharing it.

Shar,
So glad to hear that things are beginning to look much brighter for you. Your little houdini must have realized it was time to stop messing around and start finding a way back home to YOU!
I'm so happy for you!

Pat,
I'm in Elgin too!
Tell Brian it's time he starts feeling better.
The Hideaway is callin' our names!!
How could I have forgotten about the bread. Usually by the time dinner arrives, I'm so full on the rolls dripping in butter and olive oil that I end up taking most of my meal home.
Hope you are having a good day.

Al Capone's Hideaway. It is a great little restaurant that has the absolute BEST filet mignon.
In fact, just to get to it, you have to follow the signs posted up in the trees. It's in a little town called Valley View in Illinois. After your appetizers/salads they give you sherbert to cleanse your palate.
It is full of character and decorated like the 20's.
I'm suddenly getting very, very hungry!!

You asked if your post made sense....boy, does it ever. It's ironic, and like Ann, I too had thought about this same topic just the other day. It was after someone had asked a question about my Mom. Before even thinking words like tarceva, chemo, ct scans, blood levels...etc..came out.
It hit me suddenly that less than a year ago these words were all foreign to me. I wish I wouldn't have needed to become so familiar with all the cancer words. But, yet, I can't seem to get enough and am always trying to learn more and more.
Thanks for the interesting topic Lily.

Oh my...without a compass. Heck NO!
I too am directionally challenged..LOL
But, I have NO problem stopping for directions.
-
Pat,
Ok, you asked for an uplifting prayer and you got it!!!!
I'm so sorry to hear what you are going through..I truly am. The deep conversations about Bratz dolls and rainbows really got to me. I'll be praying that the scan on the 19th will bring good news and that Brian will begin to feel a little better very, very soon.

My Mom was on tarceva and developed the "rash" ten days into taking it. Her doctor gave her an antibiotic and she really hasn't had much problems other than her skin being extremely dry since.
I thought that the reaction was important too....but after reading about others, now realize that the only way of really knowing if it is working is waiting for the ct scan they will give your Mom. I sure hope it works for her!!!!!
